    Default The Franchises

I was wondering what games have made it through with at least one version on a console for every generation since the NES?

To me that would be one version on either the:

    1. NES or SMS
    2. SNES or Genesis
    3. Playstation, N64, or Dreamcast
    4. PS2, Xbox, or Gamecube

I know Dreamcast is borderline 3 or 4, but probably fits best with the PS & N64 since it's retired.

I can think of a version for every generation of Nintendo's big boys: Mario & Zelda. Mario even dates back to Atari, so he's really a grandpa. Also Romance of the Three Kingdoms comes to mind.

    What others are there?

Let's see: some off the top of my head...
    * Mortal Kombat appeared on SNES, Genesis, Playstation, Dreamcast, Sega CD/32X, Gameboy, etc.
    * Maybe not that far back, but Resident Evil has appeared on PSX, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Game.Com, and now Gameboy Color.
    * Final Fantasy seems to be a little obvious.

Can anyone else pop in here?

Resident Evil originally appeared of the Sega Saturn. I don't think many people know that version even exists...

Street Fighter did technically, because there was that "Street Fighter 2010" on NES. Sonic has also been through all of them as well, there were some SMS versions released at least in Europe, I don't know about over here though. I could think of more if I put serious thought into it

It's interesting to note that Hulk Hogan has got his face on games for NES, Gameboy, Genesis, SNES, PSX, N64, PS2, GC, and Xbox. I'm probably missing some as well. Not even Michael Jordan pulled that off.

Mortal Kombat doesn't have an 8-bit version & Resident Evil missed out on 8-bit & 16-bits

And has there been a version of Street Fighter for the PS2, Xbox or GameCube? Until then, it's not worthy of "franchise" status.

I forgot about Final Fantasy. That one totally belongs. I guess you could argue that the classics (Centipede, Pac-Man) have made it onto every system through compilations.

With the release of the new PS2 game, Contra will also be among the big boys, although those PS1 games sucked @$$.

Also, wouldn't Castlevania be in the group if a new game is released? And how about MegaMan? I'd think it would belong but I'm not sure.

Is the Mastersystem invisible to you nuts? Mortal Kombat 1,2,3 and Streetfighter 2 were all on the Mastersystem! (though mostly only in Brazil, but I believe MK1 came out in europe)

Once again, why does everyone keep forgetting the Saturn? Megaman 8 and Megaman 4X both came out for the Saturn.

There was a bad Street Fighter game on PS2 that came out when it launched. I'm sure there's gotta be more on the way too.

And Tetris and Pac-Man have been on just about every system known to man. I don't know why somebody hasn't mentioned that already.

Which generation do you guys think Saturn falls in? The "16-bit" SNES/Genesis era or the "32/64-bit" PS1/N64 era?

Or is it kind of like the Dreamcast & an in-between system?

It's a 32-bit system so it's in the PSX era (which is what killed it incidentally).

I thought "Lemmings" held the record for being on the most systems for some reason...

Just wondering, how is Dreamcast an in between system? I think of it as the forerunner to all the big 128 bit systems. The only system to have enough balls when everyone else was doing 32 & 64 bit systems. If anything, the N64 was the inbetween system (Jaguar was only 32 techinically speaking!)

How about the wrestling games? Especially WWF. Or John Madden on SNES, Genesis up to current systems.

The Dreamcast being an "in between" system is just my opinion.

I call it that because of not what it can do technically speaking, but when it came out, which was when the N64 & PS1 were dying & the new gen systems were being born.

It didn't take balls to make a bigger/better system than the N64 & PS1, it just had the luxuary of a couple of years more time to develop a better system.

It really could go both ways as to which group to include it in.
