Default What are Dreamcast Hot, New! games? I don't understand???

Can someone explain to me what are Hot, New! dreamcast games? Are they like Sega All Stars? A variant?

How many were released? Does anyone have a complete list of Hot, New! dreamcast games?

    Thanks!

They were the 2nd printing of the initial Dreamcast games that corrected the errors in the first printing. People often ask why some of the Sega Dreamcast games comes with a green "Hot! New!" sticker on the manual (or printed directly on the manual). This is to differentiate the first copies (without the tag) from the corrected copies (bearing the tag). Sega had some problems with some launch titles as they were badly pressed at one of their factories, the problematic titles were:

    - Mortal Kombat Gold (Music skips and game can freeze)
    - Hydro Thunder (had problems saving when trying to save on an almost full VMU)
    - Ready 2 Rumble (Music skips)
    - NFL Blitz 2000 (nobody really bothers about the glitch).

Those 4 games were reissued with the green tag "Hot! New!" to differentiate them from the first batch with glitches. The GD-Rom disc also had a different color on the first batch:

    - Mortal Kombat Gold has a Yellow background on the no-tag version, reddish-orange on the corrected one.
    - Hydro Thunder has a Blue background on the no-tag version, red on the corrected one.
    - Ready 2 Rumble has a Yellow background on the no-tag version, red on the corrected one.
    - NFL Blitz 2000 has a Blue background on the no-tag version, red on the corrected one.

There are also Hot/New variations, well tag variations anyway. There are tags that were stickers placed on no tag manuals, then they later just printed the Hot/New on the manuals. I'm not sure which are the rarer one however.

The Hot!New!'s were just for the 4 Midway launch titles. Midway flubbed the production of the games and the above errors were the result. Not every copy was screwed up, but a very good portion were, which is what forced the re-release in the first place.

Every release but Mortal Kombat (it looks, I've personally not found a printed version with over a year of solid looking) got the sticker/print on the manuals. I've not been able to distinguish a huge difference in rarity of them, because i've had difficulty finding a sticker for one game, while having had a hard time finding the printed version for another.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

I thought the "Hot! New!" ones fixed problems with game bugs due to bad drivers rather than issues with manufacturing.

Oh yes and the UPC codes on the insert are different for example the last 5 numbers on the original Hydro Thunder were 20980, whereas the Not/New UPC is 20985. I suppose it doesn't matter to the average collector, but if you want the original inserts, you gotta check out the UPC #'s.

So were there any other games with problems?

I got a copy of Rush 2020 on a DC lot I got recently, and it seems to work fine... half the time. The first time I played it, the music kept starting over and over every ten seconds. But I reset the game and the music was fine.

Those original Midway games are the only DC games I can recall having a significant amount of problems. If you think your problem isn't from a scratch or prblem on either of the disc surfaces the possibility still exists that you have a bad disc, as those do happen. I have had about 5 DVD's and games that didn't work when they were new out of the package.

Well the disc has some light scratches, but it's nothing too serious. It was just weird.

Here is my opinion of the Dreamcast
maybe a little off topic but still relates to the Dreamcast

The Dreamcast was honestly the most underapreciated video game system ever created as many will agree,I to this day believe if the Dreamcast would have had a built in DVD player it would have taken a huge amount of the market share here in America from the PS2.Honestly that is the truth,DVD technology was new and most non hardcore gamers thought"Whoa a DVD player and a game system all in one!!!!" and thats how the Dreamcast really died.

Dreamcasts were also better built than the original version of the PS2,its rare to find a Dreamcast that has severe problems unless its been totally been left out in the rain or something

From what i've read on DCH (Dreamcast History) they also claim a faulty version of Sonic Adventure, but imply that it was a bad batch and not a whole production run like the launch Midway games were. So stumbling into the Sonic Adventure would be much more of a rarity. Otherwise unless you just happen to get a bad copy of the game (which can happen) there wasn't any other widespread problematic release.

Was just going to mention that. My cousin got one of the "lucky" Sonic Adventure games that didnt work at all.

Wasn't Sega All Stars games the DC's "Greatest Hits" line?

The Sega All Stars versions of the Midway games are all the Hot!New! versions. The disc arts match and all work perfectly.

    @ Kitsune Sniper
Yes, the Sega All Stars were the DC equivelant to the PlayStation Greatest Hits games, or the XBox Platinum Hits or the Nintendo Players Choice/Million Sellers . I don't know Sega's requirements for what allowed a game to go All-Star but only 17 games did make the All-Star list before the DC died.

I won't drop the list in here becasue it really doesn't belong in a thread thats about the Hot!New! games, but if you need the list, just PM me i'll send it right on over.... or just look thru the search engine here, I know that we've got a thread somewhere in Classic gaming on it.

    Speaking of misprints...

I just got VF3tb from eBay, and it looks mint, and it plays fine, but when I try to see the History video, the game freezes until I push start.

    Is my disc bad?

Also, Blue Stinger was one of the games you were "lucky" enough to get with this problem ala Sonic Adventure. Not all of them were faulty, just the ones pressed at a particular plant.
