Default Sega CD model 1 or model 2? need info

I know the model 1 Sega CD was the tray loading Sega CD that was only made for Genesis model 1s.

I have a model 2 genesis and was told that I could only use a Sega CD model 2.

Besides one being tray loading and one being a hatch door opening, were there any major differences? Is one better than the other in terms of reliability and longevity?

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Carl

The model 2 lasts longer generally. The biggest issue with model 1 is that the gears will messup since it has more mechanical moving parts. If you don't mind repairing things, or are just more careful than some when loading games in a tray then get the model 1. If it ever breaks down on you and doesn't work then just leave it hooked up for looks and get a model 2. :P

It's not true about a Gen 1 not working on an SCD 2; and vice versa. I have both models of Genesis' and both of the Sega CD, and although I've never tried interchanging them.. I'm pretty sure they will work.

I've seen people sell SCD 1 and Gen 2 combos on evilBay and they claim they work fine.. it just kind of looks ugly on account of the footprint of the Gen 2 is smaller than that of the SCD 1 and it looks out of place sitting on top.

As for the SCD 2.. it originally came with an extension piece (I have a complete one) that you can add to the end of the SCD 2 and make it longer so your Gen 1 won't "hang" off the end and look silly as well.

Obviously.. the SCD 1 was made before knowledge of a second cosmetically different version of the Genesis.. so there's not an "adaptor" for it.

The Genny 3 won't work on either.

My favorite is the SCD 1; but like most said.. because of more involved moving parts.. presents more to break down. It's a general consensus between collector's that in ANY case of a console system where two versions were made (usually we're talking about a motorized front-loading tray sytem and a non-mechanized flip-top; 3DO, CD-i, etc.) the flip-top is going to be more reliable over time.

In my own personal experience I've not necessarily found that to be true. I've owned 3 SCD 1 units and the thing I've always found goes out on them first is the "tray closed" sensor switch; not the gearing or drive mechanism. YMMV.

My vote goes to 2 as well.

Not only looks better with a Genny 2, but won't have that drive problem as described.

    And I have a spare <_<

    Hi Carl,

I just wanted to say that you can use a Model 2 Genesis with a Sega CD model 1 and vice versa.

Also, there is no real diference between the two models.

I've always felt like the button on the SCD Model 2 that opens the lid feels really flimsy. The one I have feels loose, and I am a little worried about it's longevity.
