Default Rarest Game for Each System

Now, I know that there are posts for the rarest titles for each system, and there are posts for hard to find modern games, etc. However, (MODS - I'VE CHECKED ALREADY!!), there is no post that mentions the hardest to find game for each system.

It would be a cool resource to have one list of the rarest game for each system. This shouldn't be that difficult until you get to the modern system, so to avoid repetative posts that are mostly opinion anyway, let's leave out the PS2, XBOX and GameCube. No real numbers are in on those consoles anyway, so leave them out.

Also - this is ONLY for US released titles - NO homebrews, NO games that weren't made available for the public (like the Gold NWC for NES.)!!

For the most part, this should be matters of fact, and not opinion, where ever possible.

I'll start the list, and adjustments/fill in the blanks can happen by anyone who would like to add on. If I'm missing a system, feel free to mention it.

    Vectrex - ???
    Odyssey - ???
    Odyssey 2 - ???
    VIC-20 - ???
    Atari 2600 - Video Life
Atari 5200 - Bounty Bob Strikes Back
    Atari 7800 - Tank Command
    ColecoVision - Porky's (Xante)
    Intellivision - Tutankam/Super Cobra/Conversational French (???)
    NES - Myriad 6-in-1
    SMS - ???
    TG-16 - ???
Genesis - Miracle Piano Teaching System (complete) (???)
SNES - Exertainment Mountainbike Rally/Stunt Racer or Chavez II (???)
Sega CD - Keio Flying Squardun (???)
Sega 32X - Spiderman: Web of Fire
NEO-GEO AES - Ninja Masters (???) - Kizuna Encounter is EURO, otherwise
3DO - Woody Woodpecker & Friends (any of the 3 volumes)
Saturn - Street Fighter Collection (???) - Panzer Drag. Saga is $$, not as rare
    Jaguar - Battlesphere Gold (???)
    N64 - ClayFighter 63 1/3: Sculptor's Cut (???)
    PSX - Dragonball Z Final Bout (???)
Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure LE (???)
    CD-I - ???
    LaserActive - ???
Virtual Boy - Jack Bros. (???)

Again, help is appreciated - besides, I think that it will be fun!

    Thanks,
    Steve

Do you know the production numbers for Saturn Street Fighter Collection? Shining Force 3, House of the Dead, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Burning Rangers are generally pegged at 5000 copies each (Panzer Saga had a second production run). Winning Post had real low numbers, too.

I'm going to say that just the title "Zelda" for CDI might be the rarest (no, not Wand of Gamelon--the other one with the purple? cover)

personally, i would say for the vectrex it would be minestorm2, even though a lot of people consider it a proto or whatever, practically anyone that had a vectrex could have had one... it was a real release (if you only bitched)...and may be the rarest production vec game. i guess you could also make a case for mr. boston. and of course i am going to argue the colecovision one- the games that were produced by xante could have been had by anyone that went to a xante kiosk in the early 80's, so they were available to the general public.,
which reminds me... there arnt any xante entries in the DP guide under atari 2600 are there? there are several of those out there.

Thanks for the post Joe, but I have to question a couple of the entries that you listed.

    Atari 2600 - Air Raid

Is that truly rarer than the Video Life (I thought there were only 20 or so copies for VL). Are there less for Air Raid?

    Colecovision - Tomarc/Motocross

I have to agree with Willie on this one - that is, unless you aren't including the Xante released games.

    NEO-GEO - Kizuna Encounter

I know that this is the rarest non-japanese release, followed by Ultimate 11. However, I did mention up above that those were only released in Europe, not in the US. That automatically excludes it from the list.

    NES - Stadium Events

??? What? While there were a limited number of Stadium Events produced, there were far fewer Myriad 6-in-1 games. They're even numbered! However, if you are counting those as Caltron games with a new sticker and packaging, then you might be right. I don't think they should be counted that way though (if that's the case.)

Love to hear more on these.

As far as the Myriad 6 in 1 and Stadium Events, between the two, that's debatable. The Myriad at the most, right now, could have 900 max made. SE could have 2000. But how many of each still exist or accounted for? Who knows. I say Myriad 6 in 1, others say SE.

And how many Air Raids could possibly exist? Air Raid and Gauntlet could have less than 20 existing, but they may have more. We know Video Life's run. Tough call.

I wouldn't say DBZ Final Bout is the rarest PSX game. If you really wanted one, they're easily available on ebay.

Fox Hunt, on the other hand...

There are were less than 20 Video Lifes made, but I know four people who own one. I don't know anyone who owns Air Raid.

    Colecovision - Tomarc/Motocross

I have to agree with Willie on this one - that is, unless you aren't including the Xante released games.
Willie wrote the rarities in the DP Guide and this is the highest listed - so I'll defer this to him.

    NEO-GEO - Kizuna Encounter

I know that this is the rarest non-japanese release, followed by Ultimate 11. However, I did mention up above that those were only released in Europe, not in the US. That automatically excludes it from the list.
OK. It's compatible on a US system though.

    NES - Stadium Events

How do you know there were far fewer Myriad 6-in-1's? I've been trying to dig up production numbers on that - could you kindly pass them along? Our staff would really appreciate that.

The highest found number for Myriad is 888. That's under a thousand, versus the 2,000 that Jason Wilson confirmed were made of SE. Granted, how many of those SEs still exist is anyone's guess, which is why you can't say one is rarer than the other, just yet.

I'm no expert, but I thought Portnoyd made a good point. SE production run may have been higher --but Who's to say more of them haven't been destroyed? I think just "rarest" is a tough question when it comes to these older games/systems: Least number produced and Least number still in existance can be two separate things.

How exciting! I love constructive debate.

Kristine - excellent point about Final Bout. I wasn't sure about that one, which is why I put the (???) next to it. I think PSX is very hard to call at this point, although Fox Hunt is most certainly in the top ten.

Joe - my info regarding the Myriad 6-in-1 came from Dave (using the #888 copy as my basis for the statement.) I knew about the 2000 copies of Stadium Events, and had compared the two. I guess that logic is somewhat faulty, but regardless of how many copies "still exist", I don't believe that there were 2000 Myriad 6-in-1 games produced - thus the game is more rare.

On that note, I don't believe that how many copies are "accounted for" should be the sole factor in determining how rare a game is. Not everyone who collects, or owns games frequents this board. :P It would be cool if they did, but oh well...

My point is this - if you KNOW that there were under 20 copies of Video Life produced, that's a fact. Even if only 5 were accounted for, it doesn't change the fact that there were still under 20 made. In the case of Air Raid, we obviously know that it exists - there's a picture of one on www.atariage.com. What we don't know is how many were made. If the answer to that question is 30 (for example), then that means there could still be 30 out there somewhere. Just becuase we don't know of anyone who has one, doesn't mean they're completely unattainable (although unlikely.) I'm not trying to get semantical here, but I always felt that rarity was not only a measure of how many were produced, but ALSO how many were known in existance (not just one or the other.) This only makes sense to me because of Willie's statement about all 20 (or so) copies of Video Life having been accounted for. To me that makes it even rarer if those 20 or so owners will NEVER sell the game.

If every copy of a game is accounted for, and no one will part with their copy (ever), then that would make it the rarest game - wouldn't you say?
For now, there's at least a slight hope that I could find an Air Raid somewhere, someday - but not Video Life (as an example.)

Anyway, enough babble, I just wanted to try and explain myself on that one.

    Default Magic Knight Rayearth numbers

I was at Working Designs when Rayearth was manufactured, and the production run was 15,000 copies, with 5,000 each of three label variants (the three chickie-girl protagonists). WD still has plenty of copies available, and sells them directly through their website; when I left in March '01, thousands of copies of Rayearth were sitting in a Redding warehouse, next to thousands of copies of Gungriffon Blaze and RayCrisis.

About the Myriad carts...the only differnce between them and the Caltron versions is that the Myriads just had new labels slapped over them when they bought out Caltrons stock or carts, right? Any game or title screen variations between the two? If not, why are they considered seperate from the Caltrons which are more common? Hell, you can even see the Caltron label underneath Myriads.

It is truly sad that the rarest Vic-20 game is listed at a max price value of $40. Damn you price guides! Seriously, I never really follow the pricing listed in any guide. It is all a matter of what the collector collects, wants/needs, and is willing to pay. Me personally, well., I would may more than $40 for one of the Vic Boone games...that is if I can ever find one.

And since I don't have the guide (yet) I would like to add that the rarest title IMHO for the SMS was Outrun 3-D. That is if the guide counts titles made outside of the USA. If not, then Alex Kidd Shinobi is right.
