If I have a backwards-compatible PS3 and a PS2 game originally designed to use the multi-tap for more than 2 players, can I play it on the PS3 and simply use more than 2 PS3 controllers to play the multi-player mode?

Hmm...good question. I would assume that since two-player games work and the multitap is simply a hardware extender and not really reliant on software, that it should be possible. I could be completely wrong, however.
You will have to test to find out. That definitely pushes the limits of what SONY would call 'backwards compatibility'.
A definite maybe.

Technically the PS3 supports up to 7 controllers, not that it really applies to this question...
I'm not sure either, try it and let us know.
Well, just as soon as I buy a PS3 and three controllers, I will.

I have three PS3 controllers and a 60G PS3
What PS2 game do I need to test this out?
Hopefully I own it..
