Are they all the same rarity? I've seen at least two sets of disc art for this game.

As far as I know, they are basically the same in 'rarity.' I know for the Sega CD version there are a couple of designs that are more popular, but that is, of course, just popularity, not rarity.
I think there is an existing thread on this with in depth info.
With a humble heart, on bended knee...
There are actually 5 sets for the first lunar on the ps1.
Please read this page, as its very good info. Anything i can do to pimp out that site.

So I take it the " FAN EDITION " is the rarer and more expensive of the two?
I think its the rarer, far as how many where made. but i do think the other sets are more expensive, because you got the hard bound manual and cloth map, which you don't get with the fan edition, you only get a normal manual, not sure if it has a map....
More info on the lunar variants...

Just looked on ebay for the fan edition and the only person online has it at a whopping $200!
Maybe its the most spendy then. i own the "Regular Edition" set.
The Fan Editions ride the wave. Sometimes they are up, sometimes they are down. When I got my copy a few years back I tossed good $$ at it. Not too long after DB was able to snag one for about half what I paid. Rarity wise the Fan Edition is the head cheese, not that it always translates that way with sales, but if you really want one, just wait around a little. I'm sure you'll find one for less than 200. I know its not worth NEAR that much.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.
