Default Sega CD with Model 1 Genesis

was looking around the other day and came upon a few nice finds. main one that got my attention was a snes, saturn, and a genesis model 1 with a sega cd. but it wasn't the normal one with the model 1 it was the side by model for the model 2 genesis. looks very ugly with it. my question is: i didn't get any cables or cords with the cd/genny, will they work together or should i find a model 2 genny?

I have the side tumor Sega CD w/ a model 1 genesis. I hate it.

It is UGLY to the extreme. Did you get the little underpiece that sits on the left side to fill in that gap since the genesis 1 hangs off the edge like 3 inches?

You can use the typical cords for each, they work fine, and then run the audio out of the sega CD to a stereo and crank it.

I just know the genesis uses a different ac adaptor than the sega cd as far as specs on the adaptor..., Im not sure if it actually makes a difference, but if you get the ones that go to each youll be OK.

Each one needs a power supply to work. They both use the same type of supply. Video out is from the Genesis. Audio can be too, or you can use the stereo out on the Sega CD. If you use the Sega Cd audio out, with the Genesis 1 I do believe you need a audio mixing cable that plugs into the earphone jack and into the back of the Sega Cd. After everything is combined it'll form Menasor.
    Enjoy.

Yup, that's how I got mine.

It's one long mother, but honestly I don't think it's that ugly. All the cables is my biggest beef with it, which makes me glad I own a CDX as well for when I want something small with no fuss.

yeah, as far as I know though, the Sega CD one requires a bit more ampage.

Im not climbing behind the TV and traversing the tangle of doom to check for sure though.

you really want to mix the audio and use the audio out like PCE HELL said. Its killer.

Vay especially, hot the fuck damn its great.

sadly, the piece to the side didn't come with it, so as you say it hangs off the side, looks like a hideous monstrosity even without the cables hooked up. I knew the ac adapters were different, but after seeing the model 1 with the side by side i wasn't even sure if it would work.... i mean if its that ugly it shouldn't be a working unit right?

even worse i have a 32x i bought from toysrus back in the day, i'm afraid to hook all these cords.....

    do it.

attach everything, and then plug like

32X--> Sonic + Knuckles ---> as much other crap as you can stack.

    and see what happens

it might be like the time i did super gamegenie--> super gameboy ---> gameboy game genie ---> pokemon yellow ----> broken SNES

boy was that a funny day.

the side-car sega CD is ugly and feels cheap when you hold it.

I am truly baffled at how some people's aesthetics can be so easily offended. It reminds me of people who can't stand playing GBA games on the DS Lite because OMG IT STICKS OUT HOW HORRIBLE.

I mean, geez, do you spend more time looking at the system than playing it? When you try to play the games, are you unable to concentrate because your eyes keep drifting from the screen to look at some piece of plastic?

well, its this like 2 foot wide black lumpy mess on the bottom shelf of all my stuff, and when you take it out, you got this dumbass black thing that isn't even attached to make the thing even looking on the shelf anyways.

it only looks like shit when clicked onto a genesis 1 since its all uneven.

that doesn't change the fact that the thing feels cheap when you move it around though.

A Model 1 w/ Model 2 SCD is the only SCD setup I have at the moment.

The additional plastic really helps make it look better. It's still huge, less, but it's more like... American huge, rather than Franken-Huge.

I actually LIKE the look of the model one Genny with a model 2 Sega CD. Then again, that's the setup I've had since 1993 so it could be that I'm just very used to it!

I've also got a Mega Drive 1/Mega CD 1 setup. It looks "proper", of course, but I kind of like the way the mismatched setup looks (with the extender on the bottom, of course!!!).

the extender just makes it even more ghetto-fab.

you might as well put spinners on it.

Functionally though... a model 1 Genesis with a Model 2 Sega CD is actually the best setup. Model 1 with "high definition graphics" written on the top, with no TMSS copy protection screen at the beginning, has been proven to have the best sound quality. And while a model 1 Sega CD is pretty good, and looks nice with a model 1 Genesis, the drive door can wear out over time. Sega CD 2 is a more reliable machine (though if your model 1 Sega CD works fine.. more power to you!)

So there you go: Model 1 Genesis and Model 2 Sega CD. And unless you're modding for S-video or live in PAL land with RGB output, mount a 32X on top just for the better composite output quality.

For the record, the sound quality of most Genesis 2's are garbage.. and the video quality is poor on all but the most rare iteration of Genesis 2.

I love my model 1 Genesis/Model 2 Sega CD setup I completed just a few weeks ago.... but yeah I found the "extender" piece... not to mention the RF shielding plate which bolts under the Genesis.... I really like the look of the setup! And like I said, those in the know will tell you it's a quality setup where it counts: performance and AV quality.

yes the model 2 sega CD is way more reliable even if it feels cheap since alot of it is hollow plastic.

    but its so UGLY~! lol.

the mixer + audio is the best thing ever though. You really arent playing sega til you do that.

Agreed! I used to diss Sega audio back in the day... but boy does Genesis sound have its charm! Thank Yuzo Koshiro for that! Not to mention CD stuff.

If you're using a model 1, though, sometimes I wonder if a Y cable (mini-to-RCA style) from the headphone jack won't do the same- or better?

I've been experimenting with my new Genesis 1/Sega CD combo and I found that the headphone jack DOES output the CD audio as well as Genesis sound! So why the whole mixing cable thing? Of course Y cables didn't really exist much back then, and it would have been a ghetto way to hook up the console officially.. they needed an elegant way to make the Sega combo stereo-enabled from the rear of the unit ... but it sounds identical to me as using the mixing cable + audio jacks.

Maybe they're the same... or maybe some Sega expert can tell me if I'm better off running to my stereo directly from the headphone jack, or through the Sega CD audio jacks?

it would do the same to an extent (the internal mixery is better quality than the headphone out), but the real beauty comes from blasting Sega CD games.

I was playing Ecco CD last night with the bass all the way up. talk about awesome.

hell its awesome if you play the cartridge one too!

Try blasting the Sega CD version of Spiderman vs Kingpin. I think it has an awesome Spencer Nielson soundtrack.
