Arrow "Best Of CGE '03" and "Best of CGE '05" DVD sets now available!

Need more CGE on DVD to tide you over until the next CGE in person? We've got you covered.

Editing has been completed on Best Of CGE '03 and it's now in the DVD authoring and duplication phase. This is a two-disc set covering highlights from the 2003 CGE in Las Vegas, and it includes the following:
    • Disc One
    • Starcade Alumni Highlights – featuring former Starcade contestants and season 1 host Mark Richards
    • Arcade Designer Highlights – featuring Ed Rotberg, Tim Skelly, Warren Davis & Franz Lanzinger
    • The Jawbreaker Story – former Sierra On-Line programmer John Harris talks about his breakout games, and the behind-the-scenes maneuvers that drove him out of the business
    • 2003 Auction Excerpt – some of the highlights from the 2003 CGE Auction.
    • Disc Two
    • Inside Atari – the complete Nolan Bushnell panel, well over an hour and a half.
    • Sights & Sounds of CGE ‘03 – footage from the show floor and the CGE museum.
As a bonus feature, there'll also be a scaled-down version of Phosphor Dot Fossils on one disc, covering the key games mentioned over both discs - a kind of 'video glossary' to the games covered in all of the keynotes (and even the auction!).

Although the footage is older than the 2K7 set (in a few cases necessitating some edits due to tape damage), I've made great strides in figuring out how to get the stuff to hit the disc looking and sounding better; in the few cases where there are sound issues, they're merely a factor of the venue (the speakers' room was separated from the main hall with the arcade games by a folding partition wall).

I'm planning to open the ordering floodgates this weekend at theLogBook.com Media - gotta wait until payday, right? As the set is only 2 discs, the price will be closer to the previous Phosphor Dot Fossils releases. There will also be plenty of copies of this available at OVGE in Tulsa, OK this October, along with the other CGE and PDF DVDs!

Here it is! Go here to order. You can see some screenshots and a pretty good look at the box art there too. Ah heck, why not give you a good look at the box art here?

    Two related notes:

There's still, until the end of August, a great bundle deal on all of the other DVDs to date (CGE and Phosphor Dot Fossils). On September 1st, however, everything reverts to the original pricing.

Also, after the end of 2009, Phosphor Dot Fossils will only be available in the 2-disc Brown Box set. Until then, each volume is available separately (for those who already have one or the other by itself), but only the 2-pack will be available as of January 1, 2010.

Here's a preliminary table of contents for the upcoming Best of CGE '05 set...

    Disc 1
Activision vs. Imagic – 1 hour, 7 minutes
The Atari Engineers – 54 minutes
    Jerry Lawson – 48 minutes
    Bill Kunkel – 40 minutes
    Raw Footage – 21 minutes
    Bonus Features TBA

    Disc 2
    Atari Programmers – 1 hour, 23 minutes
    Bonus Features TBA

Everything was shot and is being edited in widescreen - this set will fill your HDTV with CGE goodness.

There are more details here. Also remember that if you're going to Tulsa's OVGE show or CCAG - both on October 24th - you can pre-order your copies of any of the DVDs I've produced and they'll be reserved for you.

Until then...here's the very very unfinished cover art.

Editing is complete as of today; I'll try to get the discs authored and burned this weekend.

    Now taking pre-orders!

Announcing theLogBook.com Media's final video game history DVD project of 2009 - Best of CGE '05!

    Here's a rundown of what's on this 2-disc, 6-hour set:

Activision vs. Imagic – a unique gathering of the third-party software masters. The creators of such hit Atari 2600 games as Pitfall! and Atlantis talk about what drove them from Atari to start their own companies, and their view of the state of the video game industry as of 2005. Over an hour of lively discussion!

The Atari Engineers – three of the hardware wizards who were there on the ground floor at the beginning of Atari discuss the early days: competition, innovation, and working with Nolan.

Jerry Lawson – meet the man behind the first cartridge-based video game system: the Fairchild Video Entertainment System, introduced in 1976 (and later renamed Fairchild Channel F after the introduction of the Atari VCS).

Bill Kunkel – along with Joyce Worley and Arnie Katz, Bill Kunkel was a pioneer of video game journalism and helped to launch Electronic Games Magazine. He recounts the journey from “why would anyone publish a magazine about video games?” to EG’s heyday.

The Atari Programmers – a gathering of some of Atari’s greatest video game designers talks about their time at the company, from the Nolan Bushnell era through the Warner era, competing with their former co-workers at Activision, and the perils of licensing arcade and movie titles for video games. It’s a surprisingly frank discussion of the state of the industry, then and now, lasting nearly an hour and a half.

Bonus features: CGE ‘05 Raw Footage – raw, unedited footage from the show floor and the CGE museum. It’s CGE as seen from an attendee’s perspective!

All of the video shot for Best of CGE ‘05 was shot in standard definition 16:9 widescreen; both discs have been authored in that aspect ratio. Disc one is a dual-layer disc with four hours of video, while disc two is a single-layer disc with two hours of video. Since we have to special order the dual-layer discs, Best of CGE ‘05 is slightly more expensive than Best of CGE ‘03 – but it’s also two hours longer!

    Go here to order.

    OR...

If you're going to OVGE in Tulsa or CCAG in Cleveland on October 24th, Best of CGE '05 will be making its "live" debut at both shows simultaneously, and until October 12th, you can pre-order Best of CGE '05 and any of our other DVDs at the show floor price (no shipping!), and your DVDs will be reserved for you to pick up at the show. Click here for more details on that.

It's time for the annual somewhere-in-the-same-month-as-Black-Friday sale! If you haven't picked up any CGE DVD goodness yet, here's your big chance - without going so broke that you can't make it to CGE '10.

These bundle prices are good from now through the middle of January!

Last call for the bundles for Christmas delivery - I'll be shipping today through Thursday; beyond that I can't guarantee it'll get there in time!

Let me be a pain in the ass and ask if there's any bundle for just the CGE '03 & '05 discs?
