The Tropicana is $200? It's the cheapest hotel on the strip! Yikes!

i just called and booked hoping i could still get the CGE discount which ended up being no longer available. however, they have a special 30% off promotion running right now so i got a garden room for $90 before taxes saturday night.
friday night was $140 before taxes but i decided to pass. my main concern is having a room at the trop on saturday night... i want to make sure i can drop stuff off at my room throughout the day and it's also nice to have your room just a short walk from the convention if you need a break.
you can still find rooms at the tropicana with no problem at all through the different travel sites but the price is going up. to anyone still looking i would suggest calling them directly to try and take advantage of this 30% off promo.
also, keep in mind, the garden rooms are the super budget rooms. they are in the parking lot of the tropicana and i don't even think they are connected to the hotel itself. it's a two story motel style builiding that has the most outdated furniture, bedding, decorations, etc. if it wasn't for CGE i would definitely not stay there.

I can't speak authoritatively about it since I haven't stayed there in years, but when I made my reservation, the woman I spoke to claimed they recently renovated the garden tower rooms and that many of the rooms are less than a month old and some might be redone in the days leading up to CGE. Not that it will necessarily change things, but I can't imagine it being worse than the Plaza was. My worst memory of that CGE was a roach crawling along the ceiling in the bathroom, falling into the toilet and the toilet not being powerful enough to flush it down. Yes, the Plaza was really gross.
if you go to book a room on their site, it gives you a description with pictures of the different types of rooms. it doesn't show updated pictures or talk about any sort of update for the garden rooms. my brother stayed in the garden rooms with a bunch of his buddies 5-6 years ago and i remember seeing his pictures from the trip... the current pictures on the trop site for the garden rooms look exactly like they did from the pictures i saw of my brothers trip. also, the garden rooms aren't in the towers. they are in the motel style building situated in the parking lot.
it's pretty common for las vegas hotels (older ones) to have a motel style building on their property that is disconnected from the casino that they put guests who book the lowest rate in. circus circus does this, imperial palace, palace station, etc.
i could certainly be wrong and i hope i am. i'm not trying to be a little bitch complaining about the hotel, haha, because it's vegas and you don't go to sit in your room. either way, i know it's going to be a good time.
oh, and as far as the plaza comparison i'm betting you are right. i have heard terrible things about that place.

The Trop is indeed going through renovations, but $200 (even on a weekend night) is still exceedingly expensive.
I'm not going to CGE - couldn't work out the dates since I am moving - but if the Trop is sold out/not affordable for people, there is Hooter's next door. I stayed there last year and the room wasn't great - really needed a new everything - but I didn't see any roaches either. There is also a Motel 6 about a block east of the Trop.

Well we ended up booking across the street (Luxor I think) for Friday night. We'll be at the hotel Sat/Sunday as they ended up being cheaper and it being easier for the CGE related festivities.
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Unless something has changed in the last year or so, avoid the Motel 6 like a plague. It was completely overrun by gang-banger types yelling in the parking and playing loud music in their rooms all night. There was even one group that actually left their room for the evening, and didn't turn off the stereo. (Yes, they bring their own radios to use in the rooms, apparently at full volume so they can get the required amount of bass to make them happy).
Me and my dad were actually nervous about walking through the parking lot at night, and when I went to my car the following morning I found the rear-view mirror on the passenger side completely ripped off the car...
That hotel used to be my default location going to Vegas (cheap and close to the strip), and over the years I've watched it progress into what it was that last time. It really looked like a gang convention. So I know it wasn't just a 'bad weekend', we had been kind of concerned about the place for a couple of years as it got worse and worse...
Not a recommended location...
