Default Game Boy Light v. alternatives

The wife's been asking for some sort of light for her Game Boy. Currently she uses a Game Boy Color, and she's looking for an upgrade. She does *not* find the GBA SP comfortable. I have a knockoff GBA with a backlight mod, but she doesn't like it, says it hurts her thumbs.

So, I was thinking about getting a Game Boy Light. I think it'd be cool to have one of these anyway, but I'm worried she'll want to play one of the Zelda Oracle games or Wendy Every Witch Way or something. I don't have very many GBC-only games (besides those three, Mario Golf and Tennis and Toki Tori, and I think that's it). Anyone have one of these? Opinions? How does it compare to a GB Boy Color (the Chinese knockoff) or even a modded Game Boy Color? If the latter is the best option, which mod should I go for?

    Thanks in advance!

Another option to consider is instead, purchasing a backlit, biverted Game Boy. Jonathan Chapman (@urzasrage on Twitter) is one person who makes them, and he does quality work. Have a look:

The actual Japanese-only Game Boy Light is actually more expensive, much of the time, than a fully modified DMG like what Jonathan does.

The Light was Japan only and is thus a lot more than a normal GBC. The lighting isn't even that good on it.

Might be better off with one of these knock-offs

Try getting a wormlight for the Gameboy Color, that's what people used back when the GBC was still current.

I've never used a Game Boy Light, but considering it's essentially a backlit Game Boy Pocket (though slightly larger), I doubt your wife would want the downgrade in picture clarity. While the Pocket was a good improvement over the brick Game Boy in that regard, it's still very blurry compared to the GBC.

I never really noticed too much blur with the Gameboy Pocket, maybe I need to dig mine out again. For what it's worth, the screen size is slightly larger than a Gameboy Color.

Another solution is to mod a Gameboy Color with a GBA SP frontlight.

I wasn't aware of these units - very intriguing. I might have to pick one of these up to do some comparisons.

The Game Boy Light is a beautiful console, you just get used and is very easy to fall in love with the green colored backlit.

If the SP or Light aren't good enough for her, just go classic with a worm light and play like we used to in that years

I picked up a brand new interact worm light with that link passthrough on it a few weeks back for $10 on ebay shipped. All you do is just bend it so the light reflection is in the border just above the view area and it very well and cleanly lights up the screen so you can see things very well. And since it runs off that port, no added weight to notice as it needs no batteries.

Use an external light accessory, use some other handheld(DS, PSP, phone, etc.) with a GBC emulator, or get a GBA with the backlight mod. Personally, I would go with the last option, except I would do the mod myself.
