Which could do more, graphically? I think the computers used a more advanced sound chip (could be wrong though) but was the 7800 closer graphically to the Atari ST?

The 7800 is a graphically superior machine to the 8bits. But you're talking 1984 technology versus 1979 tech. So it's a no brainer. It's too bad that it wasn't around for too long and 86-90 Atari was so cheap that they didn't properly develop games for the 7800.
The sound on the 8bits is superior because the computers had the Pokey chip. The 7800 came with the 1977 Atari 2600 sound chip and it was terrible. A couple of games Ballblazer and Commando had Pokey chips on the carts and they sounded great. But that's Atari being cheap again.
The ST's aren't related to the 7800 and I think the graphics on the ST were much better than the 7800 but then you had a faster processor, more ram, and some models with blitters, etc.
The Atari ST was actually the rival of the Commodore Amiga, and had much more power than the 7800. I had a 520ST along with an Amiga 500, and was always comparing the two. The graphics were quite a bit better on the Amiga, and the Amiga's sound was WAY better.
