Ok, I know I am going to get beat up for this one, but here it goes. When I used to visit this site (and I still do about a zillion times a day) there used to be a sense of 'mystery.' Now I know you are thinking 'What the hell is this mystery he is talking about?'
What I mean is that there used to be 'Oh I found this from a guy who worked at Nintendo' or 'There was this old shop and for some reason they had every Nintendo 'repair center' item!' It just seems to be gone. It goes for other systems too, Blockbuster Sega Competitions...Game Factory Carts...the list goes on. There used to be this whole cloak and dagger...paper trail...search for the mysterious aura about the site. WHERE IS THE THRILL OF THE HUNT? Have we all found too much? Are we all desensitized? Is it because it is just the beginning of warm weather and no one has left their caves yet? I DON'T KNOW!
I am not insulting anyones' topics. I am just wondering why the topics I see just don't seem so thrilling as they used to be. If everyone says 'Mike, you are dead wrong and you are just being weird,' I will shut up, but if others feel this way, then let's step up their game.
I know, practice what you preach. Where are your topics of rare and mysterious stuff? Well, I am at college and will be home monday...I plan on writing a lot of good topics this summer. I hope to have good finds, and make more good friends on this site. I know there are plenty of us in PA and NJ.
I like when the guys and gals here harass the guys that used to work for Nintendo or ran an arcade or hunt down a guy, who knew a guy, that heard about a guy that has a gold NWC cart!
I am just saying the topics are becoming bland and watered down. There doesn't even seem to be 'one uping' anymore. Like hey nice find but I got THIS! *pulls out jewel encrusted Kirby's Adventure that was at a Nintendo Museum* Which seems to have happened since we ended the 'Weekly Finds THread,' which I am fine with. I just want some action, some adventure, some freakin SPARKS!
Oh well....maybe I am delusional...

The Secret Society won't allow us to discuss things openly.
I agree. Though I rarely post my own opinions I have been a dedicated reader of these forums since way back and I think the topics have gotten less and less interesting lately. Of course there are still alot of great stuff being discussed but before it was amazing how every topic could attract attention and felt so thoughtrough. Dont know what happened, but hope it will be that way again soon. These are still undoubtly the best forums for classic vg discussions.

The world is explored.
There's almost nothing left that has not already been found.

I know, practice what you preach.
For me that is the key. Sometimes I get down on the forums and then ask my self....what have I really contributed lately? When was the last time I submitted an article, submitted a review, or did something else to make this place better?
Having said that, I think in general, the "world" of classic gaming isn't as interesting as it used to be. Pretty much anything you want can be found on ebay. The thrill of the hunt is gone and so goes the thrill of discussing the hunt. Myself, I've been fully immersed in classic gaming for so long there is no longer any novelty. Playing a VCS game or a classic arcade game is a common occurence for me.l

Obviously we must start exploring the ocean for pawn shops.

The Thrill Of The Hunt was sold by Goodwill last Wednesday to a couple of overweight retired grannies who brought a van and queued up two full hours before the store opened. They hauled off every single thing that said Atari, Nintendo or Sega on it: cart or console, working or not, in anticipation of the weekend flea market.
And if you want it back, the Thrill Of The Hunt now costs five times what you'd like to spend, because "that's what it's goin for on Ebay".

Excuse me I believe you have this confused with "The Great Wall Street Fortune Hunt"

What did those retired grannies say when they got to the Turbografx or 3DO stuff? "That's Japanese. Let's leave it!"

They said "Ooh. This looks like a Japanese Nintendo. Let's take it too. It'll easily pay for two or three more lunches at Cracker Barrel."

If it makes you feel any better I found another staff member from the NWC besides Ben Smith (well, he found me, as Ben did), and the Ben Smith interview was pretty well received. I am currently interviewing this new guy, so it should be prety interesting.

It also doesn't help that a lot of the people on this site, old and new, are established members of several other forums. Or they run their own web sites, online stores, brick-and-mortar stores, etc. There just isn't the same time or passion for most people that there used to be. I don't know of too many people who devote all of their time to one specific web site.
Really, though, there is more to this site than the thrill of the hunt. This place isn't all about finding "rare" stuff at lawn sales or in flea markets and then posting about it. I am here because I enjoy gaming. I've been a member here since 2000 or so and gaming since 1984. Still, the only gaming related thing I own that is worth more than $100 is the tv I play my games on. It is all about playing stuff for me and my posts tend to reflect that. There is still a lot of stuff I haven't played, so as I try out new things, that may get mentioned from time to time in an appropriate thread.

I come here because I like the hobby and I have fun discussing game related things with other people.

Another thought.......
A lot of these events you are referring to are NES-related or even Super NES/Genesis related. I tend to think some of these things will repeat themselves with the Playstation. So there may very well be the same sort of excitement for a different system. Just a half-hearted prediction on my part. After all, a lot of the fervor you are talking about took place for the Atari systems first, before a more concentrated surge in NES collecting followed.

I think since we started the weekly (now monthly) finds post, people just forget to check them. I'd love to see a separate forum just for finds, myself.
