Okay, I have been playing online Halo 2 since November 2004. I have logged in thousands of games, but I have never really brought up cheating because the first ones to appear were so "blatent". First of all I do not mod, cheat, and hate it, although it appears that Halo 2 is plagued with cheaters online. The problem I have is that I dont know enough about the problem to detect it. I was wondering if anyone else could help me understand a couple of things that I have a hard time understanding. I am at most, an OK player, but I just want to get some things straight so that I dont get mad at someone not cheating.
1. I see alot of people who are using the BR with "ultra fast bullets" is this a mod? Is this considered cheating?
2. What is the best way to detect "subtle cheating in Halo 2?"
3. What are ways to detect if a player is cheating, modding, or is otherwise not playing fair?

I'm not sure what you mean by ultra fast bullets. There is something of a bug/button combo in the game that lets you fire two bursts quickly, but I don't remember how it's done, and I'm almost positive that there was an offset to it, like the next burst would take extra long to fire.
As for subtle cheating, hard to say. It may be as clearcut as one guy having a good connection and everyone else's sucking. Or maybe they're freakishly accurate. I've been accused of cheating before just because I was a good shot; there's not much to go on if it's subtle. But generally if you think someone was cheating, and you mark it accordingly on their account, the xbox live people will check them out(assuming enough people complain).

when I say "fast bullets", Someone with a BR can take me out in two to three shots, while I can nail them in the head and it takes five. On my connection it looks like they are firing way fast.

Xbox Live usually masks lag pretty well, such as shooting a rocket just before you die but it never going off. Even though you saw it shot, you were lagged. The "several shots in the head" sounds like you're not host. It is especially noticeable with the BR at medium distances. They may be cheating, but chances are, you're just not host, which always sucks. If you are host, you usually have no problems getting 4 shot kills with the BR, easy kills with the banshee, and never miss a body shot with the shotgun. Said difficulty made me stop playing, because we were playing on a shared connection that obviously was rarely fast enough to get host, and once you get ranked above 30, it's a big deal.

Basically if someone in the other team has a better connection than you they will see you a split second before you see them giving them the advantage. It will look like on your screen that they killed you way to quickly but on his screen the kill would look normal. The only thing that you can do about it is try to play more stealth like and dont go out into the open as much on your own. Plus theres people who do superjumps on to unreachable places just to pick everyone of or to grab a flag quickly which totally ruins the game for everyone. ======= Riddled with bugs and cheats and lag.

I remember one of my friends accused a certain player of putting their modem on "stanby" or whatever so when he turned it back on he could run around and shoot anybody near while time was frozen.
Then again, my friend is a little crazy, I dunno.

You also have to remember that there are people that have logged 1000's of hours of gameplay in the past 2 1/2 years. Some people are just that good. You may think they're cheating but there are some people who can get a headshot off before you even see them.
My guess is the (ever present) lag. Lag is one of the huge flaws in Halo 2 online play and hopefully will be a thing of the past when Halo 3 is released. Most other online FPS's on the 360 have minimum lag, so it would stand to reason Halo 3 will eliminate it for the most part.

Yeah all Xbox games I used to play on Live lagged, sorry but Xbox Live is a terrible service.
Your connection + Server connection + Xbox Live "middle man" in the way = Lag
Sorry If I upset someone, but that's my opinion and i've been there and done that so I should know.
I would rather play online games through servers maintained directly by the publisher. Xbox Live service is just in the way.

Sorry but it has nothing to do with x-box live. I play other games online with ps2 and pc and the game developers maintain the servers and there is still the same sort of lag.

are you sure there not just using the charge up plasma pistol and BR? That will kill you in like one shot.
I stopped playing that game 6 months after it came out due to the massive amounts of cheating.
Mostly the modem standby trick that drove me insane.

Heh...you obviously haven't been on Xbox Live for awhile.
