(This is a slight retooling of a story I posted a few years ago right here on DP's forums.)

A few years ago, an old neighborhood pal of mine dropped by the house to visit and catch up on old times. While talking, my friend mentioned that his younger brother had begun collecting videogames. “You know, like those old Atari and NES games we used to play back in the day,” he said. With a grin on my face, I told my friend I had something to show him. I led him upstairs to my game room and flipped on the lights, revealing the thousands of videogames I have stacked upon shelves, lining each wall.

“I see you collect them too,” he laughed.

After talking about old games for a bit, my friend mentioned that he and his brother were searching for a specific old Nintendo game. It was a sports game that the two of them had played together as kids, but had since forgotten the name. In fact, he said, they couldn’t even remember if it was a football or a basketball game. The only real fact the two of them could remember was that the game starred a played named “Bubbo Breebo.”

The minute he said that name I burst out laughing, realizing exactly what they had remembered. I walked straight to my Nintendo collection, thumbed through a few rows or cartridges, and pulled out the game. I then inserted the game into my NES and powered on the system.

Up on the screen appeared the words “Double Dribble,” and in the best computerized voice the NES could muster, it said aloud, “Bubbo Breebo.”

I got such a kick out of the whole incident that I gave him the cartridge to give to his brother.

LOL

Man, that's classic. Didn't the NES have the best digitized voice EVER? LOL

Don't forget about the cool digitized voices from another 'classic' NES game; "The Adventures Of Bayou Billy".

Just the title of the game being spoken by a digitized voice is great! (maybe not, but it is funny)

"Thee Edvenchurs uv Bye-yoo Bill-ee!" lol

Ghostbusters had digitized voice too, although it sounded like "Go Faster" to me.

How about whatever the hell they say at the end of each stage in Bad Dudes? I know it's supposed to be "I'm bad!", but to me it always sounded like "Kb-PCCCHHHH!" LOL

Although it may not have been great on the NES, I thought the digitized voice in the C64 version of Ghostbusters was, at the time, one of the most amazing things I'd ever heard.

The guy getting run over by the tank in Beach Head II is my all time favorite (although "medic!" from the same game is pretty good too).

Can you translate this NES digitized title?

The Double Dribble arcade game actually sings the Star Spangled Banner before the first game. Hideously off key, Rosanne Barr would be proud.

Man, that would make a fun contest. We should make a contest that consists of 10-20 digitized phrases (we'd have to use lesser known ones) and see if people can guess what they are supposed to be saying.

That wouldn't work for one of my favorites:

"SKATE...OR...DIE!.....SKATE OR DIE! DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE!"

The best intro to a NES game ever has to be the Three Stooges..."Hey guys, we're in the wrong game!" "You imbecile!" Smack!

I put this in for my brother in law just last week and it's even funnier now than it was back when I first played the game as a kid :)
