Can't remember a game

Ok I played this game back when I was a kid on computer, and I know there was an NES version of it too... somewhere around 1990 or a little bit earlier.. had a 386 with a Hercules monitor.

It was an action RPG, there were different towns you could visit, and you could talk to people, opening up new conversations via keywords (ask about THE KING). I can't remember much else except that when you killed enemies, they turned into bones that decayed over a few seconds.

Any thoughts on that?

Turning to bones I'm am thinking maybe the immortal. I remember a big to do over the graphic death scenes.

Nope, not that. Wasn't a dungeon crawler, it was all (or mostly maybe) overworld action. It's odd the details I remember... you start off in a town (imagine that) ... in the next town to the south you could get a throwing axe that would always come back to you... to the far south east was a huge desert with some ruins inside it that were really hard to find.

The details about the overworld, towns and axes make me think of the Ultima: Runes of Virtue games.

Nope, not an Ultima game, but it was that sort of viewpoint and playstyle... argh this is driving me nuts! Can't find anything to jog my memory anywhere =/
