Has anyone else here had the chance to vist this wonderfull treasury of great arcade games? :)

I consider myself lucky, because for the four years that I went to college at nearby Plymouth State, my friends and I would take monthly trips to the place, and those memories are enough to last a life time.

For those who have not been, Funspot is reconized as one of the best locations to play classic arcade games. I know they have had tournaments and other things there as well. And it brings in tourists as well, because it's location is right on a large lake in central New Hampshire where tens of thousands come to enjoy themselvs each year, especily during the summer.

Even with all of that, though, it's not exactly the happening place on Earth. LOL

I went to Plymouth State College, in nearby Plymouth NH, in the fall of 1994 because of incentives and being in state. Good school, great skiing in the winter (a second love of mine, the first being video games :D ), and friendly people. And a very good history program, which is what I got my BA in. However, it's rather isolated. Despite the fact the school sits right off the Interstate, you have to drive 30 minutes to get to anything having anything (like a Wal-Mart) and 45 minutes to the closest city, Concord. Needless to say my friends, not all of whom had as much money as me (I had a good job) or good cars loved me. :)

Looking on the state's website one day toward the end of my first semester for suggestions on how to kill weekends besides drinking (a favorite activity), I found a ad for the place so we went. Only about a 20 minute drive. And I was in heaven!

Here were all these great games from my youth in perfect working order. I'm a little too young for the golden age of arcades (born in 76) but I rediscovered many of my favorites here. Most of us were good players so we could make $10 last for a few hours for each of us. Some of these games have still never been done justice in a home format (Star Wars: The Arcade Game and T2 come to mind) and since we often went on Friday or Sat nights it was never very packed.

It was also quite fun to play air hocky, multi-player racing games (one of the only 'modern' games they had), and ticket games like Ski Ball.

I have'nt been back there since I graduated in June of 98, but their webpage is still up (http://www.funspotnh.com/) so I can only assume they are still alive and kicking. Too bad it has to be located in the middle of nowhere, though! LOL

Funspot is probably my favorite place in the whole wide world.

Seriously.

The place is amazing.

I used to live in Winchester, MA (about ten minutes outside of Boston). For a few summers, I went to a YMCA camp on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. It was "Camp North Woods" to anyone who might know the area. Anyhoo, each year my parents would pick me up, and we'd head straight to Funspot.

Right before I moved to Houston, I made sure to do two things before I left. The first was to visit NYC once more while it was still close. The second was to spend a day at Funspot.

I visited Boston in July. Sure enough, I made my friends drive my ass up to Funspot for a day's worth of gaming. I blew about $15 on "Satan's Hollow" alone. Every time I visit, I make sure that my initials are the only ones on the high score table by the time I leave.

I can't reccomend the place enough. If you're anywhere near the Boston area, it's well worth the two hour drive. In fact, Weirs Beach is full of arcades. Some are pretty long in the tooth, but they're still fun nonetheless. One of the crappy "beachfront" arcades had a copy of the "Journey" arcade game at one time. Unfortunately, it was gone by the time of my July visit.

Heh.

Great to see that others know of Funspot's true greatness.

funspot is a treasure! where else can you play all those arcade games? we've gone back and forth on the idea of having an NECG meet there. we talked to their events people about it, they loved the idea but never managed to figure out what to do with it. perhaps someday...if i thought we could get at least 20 gamers up there it would be the ultimate game meet for us.

Man. I'd defintely have to plan a trip up there to match up with a possible NECG meet at Funspot.

That would be most excellent, indeed.

I wish you were dead.

Surely you're not talking about those tiny indoor kiddie bumper cars.

'Cause if you are, I really do wish you were dead.

The little bastards that ride those things honk the horns INCESSANTLY.

The noise coming from that room wafts into the room with the air hockey tables, thus fucking up my air hockey-related shit.

C'mon. Let's take a poll. What's better?

Bumper cars?

Or...

The machine that Billy Mitchell used to achieve the first perfect game of "Pac-Man."

Exactly.

Keep in mind, you might be talking about a different set of bumper cars. If that's indeed the case, and if they don't have functioning horns, then I wish no harm upon you.

OMG! I love you! Whoever first made a recent post about Funspot. I am definately going there. It's only 5 hours away. That's a hell of a lot of video games. I wanna get all my friends to go up to play some poker too so they'll come with me.

I'd move up there just to be near the place.. how's jobs up there heheh?!

heh, I live like 15 minutes from funspot.... I hardly EVER go though, they don't have any pinball games I like, and with my mame cab, there are only a few games that I really enjoy playing there as opposed to home. (all the sitdown cockpit type games, star wars, hard drivin, spy hunter, etc..)

When I bring the kids it gets iffy, at 6.5 they're still a bit too young to enjoy anything past the bumper cars or skee ball, and usually have more fun playing their gamecube. Couple times they've had a blast, couple times it's turned boring and ugly.
