Hello to all, I have been reading here for a couple weeks and really enjoy the topics and discussions. I live in Boulder, Colorado and am really getting into the hobby. What I really want and have started to collect is Football Games. Dont get me wrong I love lots of other games as well, but ever since i was a young buck Football games have been a part of my life...and i work in the profession as well! I am also a huge fan of Halo, Mario, Metroid, Socom US Navy Seals, and many others. My 1st football video game experience was intelevision NFL Football i was hooked. But my All-Time Favorite is NES Tecmo Bowl and Super Tecmo Bowl (My Holy Grails) I dont have them yet but I really want A Complete in Box Mint of both. What really excites me is how you guys find unreal deals...i went yard sale hunting this weekend and had no luck..but anyways glad to be here and go Buffs!

If you have a desire to collect Football (or any sports) games, you're in luck. Sports games in general are typically seen as the scourge of collections, and for the most part, are extremely inexpensive to collect. It's not uncommon to see 16 bit and newer sports games sell for pennies.
Tecmo and Super Tecmo bowl are both classics. Do you have Tecmo Classics for any of the newer systems? Tecmo Bowl is available there and I still toss the virtual pigskin around in there sometimes.
Welcome to the forums!

I'd recommend starting with football games for newer systems like the PS1, PS2 and XBox. Maybe move onto the Super NES or Genesis next. As you may know, they each had 2 or 3 versions of Tecmo Super Bowl.
Welcome to the forums.

I am pretty sure that it was 3 version, unless they made a 4th that I don't know about.
I was collecting sports games for awhile, and was able to get genesis sports games for around .25 to 1 a piece.
I found alot of sports games at goodwill (well for genesis).
If you have a genesis, I would recommend trying goodwill, but if not, then, as mentioned before, try going for newer systems.
Also, welcome.

Welcome.
I am a Football addict for many years. Football games all started for me with X's & O's Football. Huge trackball, limited number of plays. Injuries were even part of the game. Literally. I myself suffered more then a few trackball related "burners" or such.

The one game I give a big don't recommend or a big strictly for shelf only, that would be John Elway Football. It is one of the games I rented and was glad I did. Just so I didnt pay full price for this unique football experience...

Some people here may discourage it but you could always try a place like EB/Gamestop. That's why I'd start with PS2, XBox or PS1 football games. Gamestop is still selling used football titles for those systems, though far fewer of the PS1 games. More often than not, you can get copies of most of the football games that come with the manual and in the original case.
So you can walk into one of their stores and probably find 10-15 football titles all at once for any of those systems and the majority of them are 99 cents used. Like I said above, you'd be able to pull a game off the shelf and check to see if it has the manual and if it is the original case. As long as you can deal with their sales people and with not seeing the disc until you hit the register, it is a cheap way to fill a ton of holes in your football collection for a newer system. Especially when they do a Buy 2, Get 1 Free Sale. With a little effort, you could end up with 15-20 football games in decent condition (or better) for $20 or less.
Personally, I'd start with football games from that era (PS1/PS2/XBox). The old football games for NES, Super NES and Genesis aren't going anywhere and they'll be just as easy to pick up a few months from now as they are today. Getting the newer games out of the way while there are still a bunch of copies available used in one place for as low as $0.99 is easier than trying to get them 2-3 years from now in Goodwill or a pawn shop one at a time for $4-5 a piece. As for buying some of them on Ebay, you'd have to pay shipping. You may need Ebay, though, to get complete copies of some of the older cartridge games.

I'm surprised you didn't find more. Since the EA games are more common, the best ones to grab for XBox or PS2 would probably be the earlier Sega Sports games or the Konami games, which date back to around 2001-2003 or so.

Cool collection idea.
Flack is right, a lot of gamers look down to sports games. If you're looking for cheap football games, perhaps create a thread in the Buying and Selling Forum here at DP...something like...Looking for cheap CIB Football games any system
I bet you get flooded with offers. There's folks here that probably have doubles, triples, quads, etc. etc. of certain football titles they'd let go for cheap just to get rid of them.
Welcome to DP, good luck with your collection.

Any time the topic of football is brought up, I always like to chime in with what I think is the best football game of all time. Most will say Super Tecmo Bowl, but that is Arcade football. I'm talking about pure football. Don't get it wrong, I can enjoy a good game of Arcade football too, but when I want a more serious game of football I look to the football simulations. My all time favorite football game is:
Madden 93 for Sega Genesis.
Personally, I don't think any other game can touch it, from a pure playability standpoint, and also from the offensive and defensive balance the game had. Visually it pales in comparison to modern day football games, but it's still an awesome game. I've been playing football games since "FOOTBALL" on the Atari 2600. Every single year I always look for the best football game of that particular year.
Here is a long rant I posted on another forum about my favorite football games of all time and my history with football games:
WARNING - THIS IS INCREDIBLY LONG! - UNLESS YOU LOVE FOOTBALL VIDEO GAMES AVOID THIS POST AT ALL COSTS
I started playing video football games way back in 1978 at the age of 8. We had an Atari 2600, and the game was simply called "Football". You had 3 players on each side of the field and you could actually steer the ball after you threw it.
Then when the Original Nintendo came out, I got Ten Yard Fight. Not the greatest game, but a huge improvement over the Atari days.
Then of course Tecmo Bowl came out and Video Football games had matured big time, from their prehistoric beginnings. Does anybody remember using that Kick Returner on the Chicago Bears, "Gentry"? He could take it all the wall all the freaking time! That was a great game.
Then I got a football game called TV Sports Football for the Turbographx-16. This was an amazing game at the time, because you could hook up a turbo tap and 4 controllers and actually play 2 on 2. The only thing was that about two months after this game came out, another game came out on the Sega Genesis Called..........
John Madden Football.
Yep, the original John Madden Football on the Sega Genesis was a total revolution in the way football games were made. It took the game into the 3rd dimension. Or at least it appeared to take the game into the 3rd dimension. It was a total revolution in football gaming, and all previous football games would quickly be forgotten.
Then came John Madden Football 93 for the Sega Genesis. What I feel, still today, is the greatest football game of all time. (The Sega Genesis version, that is) No other football game before, and no football game since has been able to duplicate the flow and purity of John Madden Football 93. Madden 93 on the Sega Genesis is simply untouchable. Sure, there are games now with much greater graphics, and much greater depth, and much greater options, etc, etc, but no game to date has been able to capture the flow of Madden 93 on the Genesis.
Then after that, there were Madden 94 and Madden 95, and then when the Original Playstation came out a new contender appeared. NFL Gameday. Madden was a no - show that year on the Playstation and NFL Gameday had the system to itself and it shined brightly. It was a huge advancement over the Madden games on the 16 bit systems.
Then of course you had Gameday 96, Gameday 97, Madden 98, etc, etc, but things kinda stagnated until the Sega Dreamcast was released. With the Sega Dreamcast came the arrival of a new contender to the throne.....
NFL2K.
The Original NFL2K was a shock to everyone, coming out of left field and shocking the video football world. The game was so far advanced beyond any Playstation football game that comparisons were moot. Then you had NFL2K1, the first ONLINE console football game, and what remains today as one of the best playing and best flowing football games since Madden 93 on the Genesis.
Then the Playstation 2 arrived and with it came a new Madden Game rebuilt from the ground up. The game had visuals and sounds never before seen in a football game, far surpassing NFL2K1 on the Dreamcast. But did it surpass it in gameplay? Probably not. Sure NFL2k1 was somewhat arcadey, but Madden was just too slow and methodical on the PS2, It just didn't flow as smooth or realistic.
Then with the arrival of the XBOX came NFL Fever. This was a game that had taken Football graphics to a whole new level. With incredibly detailed stadiums and crowds and weather affects and player models. The game was a solid game, not as good truthfully as the NFL 2K series or the Madden Series, but it was so jaw dropingly gorgeous that many Football fans ingnored the flaws and ate the eye candy non stop.
Then came last year, with NFL 2K3 being a serious contender and Madden on the XBOX being a serious contender as well.
Of course, from that point we got NFL 2K4 and ESPN 2K5, which is widely considered to be the best current football game in existence. I still like to think that Madden 93 is the best all time, but I have to give it up for ESPN 2K5 on Xbox 1. That game was just so tight in every department. Amazing graphics, incredible gameplay, everything was so well done. And then after ESPN 2K5, EA saw the writing on the wall and realized the only way they can stop Visual Concepts from taking their golden goose, is to pay a billion dollars to the NFL to make sure that nobody else can make a NFL game. What a freaking dissaster from a standpoint of getting good football games every year. Then we had Madden 06 on 360, a dud, and Madden 07 on 360, quite a bit better than 06, but still I ultimately think ESPN 2K5 on Xbox 1 is a better game if you really get down to it.
Now we have All-Pro Football 2K8 coming out on PS3 and Xbox 360 this year, and of course Madden 08. It will be interesting to see what ulimately happens with that. I plan on renting both and just seeing who ends up having the better game. The lack of a NFL license will definitely way heavily with me, All-Pro is going to have to play so much better for it to be my No.1 football game this year, but anyways, I digress....
if you actually read this entire post then congratulations! You, definitely don't have attention deficit disorder!

Sorry about that post above, I just edited it. I did a search for a post I did along time ago, and just cut and pasted it, and it was actually the wrong post. I didn't bother to read the whole thing, and then when I read it today, I realized I was talking about the state of football in 2004, and it was kinda off topic. Anywho, sorry about that long rant, but I'm a huge football nut and a huge video game nut, and every single year I look forward to the latest crop of football games always hoping that the ulimate football game will come out. The only two years that I think that really happened for me was in 1992 when Madden 93 came out, and in 2004 when ESPN 2K5 came out.

You have to be a member for a certain number of days, I think 10. So once you've logged a short amount of tenure here, you automatically get that permission. Just wait it out.
I suggest using the time playing some of the football games you've already picked up ;) Sorry, I couldn't resist......
