Won this on ebay a week ago and received it in the mail last night. Really enjoying it. Question though: any advice on which stat(s) to boost when you gain a level out of the 3?

Man, it's been a long time since I played it, but what a great game. My favorite of the PM games by a slight margin. I think when I played I spread the love among my stats and stayed pretty balanced.

I ended up with lots of HP and badge points and less flower points.

I was always a big fan of badge points :D

I always focused on Health first, and then Badge points, since you could always increase your Flower points with special Badges.

Exactly. You need a little HP boost at the start, and after the badges are very important. The badges lets you have more FP if you want, but if you choose to level up FP you will not have a lot of possibilities with the badges. You need A LOT of badges, they are cool 8-)

The strat guide really needed for this game too?

I always loved the HP and FP regen badges :)

I don't think it really matters because don't you max out at 50/50/30 hp/fp/bp?

Not at all. There aren't that many secrets or hidden items...the few that exist, you'll find during the normal progression of the game. Paper Mario is a very basic "starter" RPG. "RPG-lite" if you will. RPG fans had to take what they could get on the N64 back in the days.

In regard to the strat guide, I may just get it to have it (easier then printing out faq sheets), and one those cases where I'd want to enjoy the artwork as well.

Kataboom, here's the auction:

Oh I used to play PM64 all the time (Well I play TYD and SPM now). Definitly go with hp, because it's a bitch when you get to bowser and you're easily pwnable, even after the flower ray.

I've only ever played the Gamecube and Wii versions. In comparison, how would you people that have played the N64 version and the others rate this version?

The Wii verison (I thought) was bad, and the GCN one was very similar to the GCN one. It just added a lot of new stuff. The N64 one really is my favorite due to the nostologic feeling. Go and get it! :)

Definitely buy the N64 version.

Though I disagree that Super Paper Mario is bad. Maybe you didn't like it but you must see that it is a quality game and is full of original ideas. It's not not the same type of game as the GCN and N64 versions. SPM is a platformer with the style of a Paper Mario game so it feels weird to compare them they way you did (did that sound mean?). It also got high ratings if you check those before buying a game.

Paper Mario is a kick ass game. I would give you some advice on it but I barely remember half of the game, Haven't played it in a while ;) Have fun with it though.

With other Paper Mario games being said, I never finished The Thousand Year Door, and never played Super Paper Mario yet, I enjoyed Thousand Year Door alot but I can't say a lot about it, since like I said, I didn't finish it. I hope Super Paper Mario is good, I hear mixed things about it, some say it's bad, and some say it's good. I'm pretty sure most people say it's bad because they never played the Paper Mario series.

I didn't like it because it was a huge let down, because I was hoping for another follow up, but instead they gave us a different type of game with the Paper Mario name slapped on it. It's like if they if they made a game with the Mario RPG name on it, and it completely changed the formula...

I can see what you mean though to say it's unfair to compare it with the other games, but I was very disappointed with Super Paper Mario.

Another note: Paper Mario's attribute raising is similar to SMRPG's with choosing between HP, Flower Power, and Badges.

Go for badge points, in my opinion. I just got the game for free from my girlfriend. She was getting rid of stuff and I found a box of 8 or so N64 games. In that box was PM64. I mentioned how I used to really love that game, and she said she hated it and I could have it. While I would normally scold someone for hating such a great game, I was too happy to be getting another copy to bother at the time.

As of now, anytime I level up I'm putting it into BP, then likely HP and FP again. Up to Mt. Lavalava now. Ended up already fighting Koopa Jr after a whale ride and opened up the Toad Town tunnel pipe to Yoshi's Villiage. Super Blooper was a pain.
