I'm sure this will upset some diehard sega fans.

Granted i didn't think it was a bad add on for the Genesis.

It had some good games but it's also had way to many, fmv games or games that were ported from it's cart form.

Not to mention it didn't take much for the power on it to blow out.

I should know... i use to own one and went through two of them :p

You will notice... he just reviews some of the worst games for it not the good ones.

Still i like how he parody's the old, Sega-cd tv add from start of his video lol!

I thought it was pretty funny.

I don't see why you're surprised he mainly played the crappy games... it says right in the theme song he "plays the games that really suck ass". *L*

The SegaCD gets a bad rep as having nothing but horrible FMV games when they actually comprise a fairly small part of the library, and a big chunk of the ones that exist were all by Digital Pictures. But, I'm not going to complain about that, because that's not what the Video Game Nerd is about. The point is just to have a good laugh.

So, I'm a little disappointed in this SegaCD bit. The SegaCD has the worst games ever, the Make My Music Video games. Any single one of Digital Pictures's games would have provided a rich buffet of opportunities to humorously bash. Yet, the joke really seems to have been "Hey, wanna hear something funny? SegaCD!!! Har, har, har!" By just randomly tossing out Digital Pictures games as well as a couple of Renovation titles and Sherlock Holmes, the whole bit was just a bland scattershot of unfocused humor.

Seriously, I love the SegaCD. I love Dark Wizard, Silpheed, Shining Force CD, Lords of Thunder, Dungeon Explorer, and I really wish I had Robo Aleste again. I even like Time Gal. However, I freely admit that the SegaCD had some of the worst things masquerading as games that the industry has ever seen. Even a standard Akklaim movie licensed game is better than the MMMV series or Night Trap. Yet, instead of focusing on one of those games which richly deserve the Angry Video Game Nerd's deluxe treatment, we get this pretty uninteresting and generally unfunny bit.

Maybe he's still worn out from the multi-part Ghostbusters masterpiece. This one is almost as bad as the Atari 5200 one. Hopefully in the future he'll recharge and give Night Trap or one of the Make My Music Video games the thorough lambasting they so richly deserves, and give us all a good laugh.

I dont know..I guess it was kinda funny, but Im think Im biased since I think the Sega CD was a good system. Yeah, it had a lot of shitty games, but I got a lot of Sega CD games on my shelves that show it had still had a good library (plus some very good Mega CD games too). IMO I still like it WAY better than the shit called the N64...

I love the AVGN, but honestly, I thought this was one of his weaker videos.

Can't argue with ripping on the SegaCD though. Terrible system.

That video was garbage, plain and simple.

- He rips on the Sega CD for having shitty games but only reviews the worst ones? Gee, we can apply to that logic just about ANY CONSOLE. He also says that he only button mashes and doesn't even know what he's doing in most of the games he "reviews."

- From what I could glean from his rantings, he doesn't like FMV games, light gun games or digital comics; so this isn't a Sega CD-only complaint then.

- "Whaah! Terminator is too hard!"

- He can't comment on Sherlock Holmes because it's like "one of those early CD games released on PC." Maybe if he actually took the time to read, he'd know that it is an early CD game. It was first released in 1991.

- I also love when he criticizes Night Trap's difficulty: "The problem with Night Trap is that the only way to get good at this game is to play it over and over." LOL!

He's spot-on about Bram Stoker's Dracula though.

Basically, he just picks a bunch of crappy games and rips into them, which seems to be his schtick. It's a lame, played-out one though, since there are already so many angry gamer nerds on the Internet. He just has better production values.

He's actually reviewed decent games and he gives fair reviews when they're deserved. But yeah, that's his schtick. :P

I agree with your main premise, but he has a point about Night Trap. Games that are put together in such an arbitrary, random, or nonsensical way suck because the only way to get through them is through massive amounts of repetition and trial & error. It's like showing a player a set of 16 boxes and saying "ok, pick them in the right order and you win, one mistake and you lose"- you'll just have to repeat the same thing over and over until you unlock the right combination. Not a great premise for a video game.

It's a character, not neccesarily his own personal opinions. It's meant to entertain, not inform.

If anything I think he just used *cheap* sega CD games, as the "good" ones are almost all very expensive.

For the record I enjoy both this video and playing Sega CD games.

I'm going on record and saying that 3 Ninjas is actually a pretty good game.

I've seen most of the AVGN episodes. I agree this one is a bit weaker than usual. I think it's mostly because he tries to cover an entire library of games rather than a series or just an individual game.. ~13 minutes and 3 of that is the theme song. heh

Still great stuff and I look forward to the 32X rant.

I am looking forward to the 32x rants. That system for the most had games that were released 4 o r 5 months after the same game came out like MK 2, some bad orginal orignal games and doesn't really show it power except for Virtua fighter, and Virtua racing Deluxe and a couple other games.

I can't wait for him for going off on Sega for realeasing the 32x months before the saturn came out.

(Top 20 games for the Sega CD)

Despite what reviewers like this will lead you to believe, a debate over what the top 20 games are for the Sega CD can become pretty heated (yes, there were that many "good" games for it). This thread above proves it.

I just posted the following there:

"I'll just comment to say that given the bad reputation the Sega CD has, it is good to see so many games that are being debated for a Top 20. So the system has a lot more "good" games than people like to admit. Obviously, we aren't having trouble thinking of 20-25, or even 30+ "good" Sega CD games. Funny how a few a**holes (not on this site) like to practice revisionist history and say that the Sega CD was a "failure."

It doesn't belong in the Top 20 but the Sega CD does a great version of FIFA International Soccer which I've never heard any praise or reviews for online. Too bad, since it is an excellent title."

Tron...haha...good stuff...but we have seen better of course. Did you bump our thread on neo-geo.com with the Sega CD from AVGN? It's your turn! lol This one is okay but James has much better game reviews on other shitty games. Till the next one.

True, but my point is that it's not something inherent to only Night Trap. You just described most of the games ever released, like maze games (Pac-Man), shmups, games like Splinter Cell etc. Memorization has long been an unfortunate staple of the industry, and Night Trap is just one of a million games that's guilty of relying on it.

I've seen all of his reviews to date and at least he does capture gaming's collective spirit of frustration. Sure, some of his reviews are kinda iffy (I actually like Bible Adventures, except for the baby Moses level) but some of his ramblings are dead on. Sure a lot is an act, but if you pay attention his own personal opinions occasionally show and credit is given where due.

I never saw this guy before, but this was pretty funny. I love my Sega CD, but there are a lot of bad games to go with the great ones he somehow missed.

(I get it, I get it... He craps on bad games. I just wish some of his jokes couldn't be seen a mile away.)

Sega Cd was a good system with an above fair amount of decent games for it. The problem at the time was a couple of things

1. The price sucked...who wants to pay hundreds of dollars for an add on?

2. Many games were mosly just enhanced versions of current Sega Genesis games. While FMV was added, gameplay stayed constant to the standard 16-bit fare.

The positive about the Sega CD now...is that you can let friends play the games for free :).

Yeah i did bump the thread there and link it last week.

All in all i got some enjoyment out of the review.

He should, have a follow up review for it though given what was release for it.

Still about the only games i did like on the sega-cd were these.

Final Fight
Lunar SS
Lunar EB
Snatcher
Shining Force CD
Sonic CD
Keio The Flying Squadron
Time Gal
Revenge of the Ninja
Rise of the Dragon
Popful Mail
Dark Wizard
Fatal Fury Special:Only way i could play it back then.

There's a few i did miss for it like silpheed and robo aleste sadly enough.

You notice... i did list two fmv games but those are the ones that i only liked.

All in all the rest of games for it i didn't care for.

Only a matter of time until he rips on the 32X.
