View Full Version : Any Sega CD games besides ROTD that have both box/case releases?

So I know Rise of the Dragon has it's regular case type and a much more uncommon box version (in the vein of the older Sega CD boxes, not the newer type digital pictures used for their cd/32x releases). Anyone know if there any other games released like this?

I think the box type rise of the dragon should be added to the Sega CD rarity guide. I feel like I'm the only one that knows it exists. :P If anyone knows the story behind the ROTD box type I'm interested in hearing it. Released right as the boxes were getting phased out? Canadian release? Whu?

You are not the only one that knows it exists, it is one of the 22 early released games. I remember discussing this with some forum members years ago when I bought mine at Classic gaming expo. I do believe the story goes that initial runs of the game were boxed but then it was then packaged in the "new" jewel cases. It is definately uncommon, I am glad to have scored it complete and cheap for my complete US Sega CD collection.

So Rise of the Dragon is the only game to be released in both forms of packaging? I always assumed that several of them were that way, in the same way how many PlayStation games came out in both long boxes and standard CD cases. Pretty interesting if RotD is the only odd one out.

I got about half of the boxed games games myself (which, incidentally, consists of about half of my Sega CD collection). I managed to get them all in one fell swoop, and luckily, Rise of the Dragon was among them.

Night Trap.

Night Trap kind of falls in a different category. You have the original release, then you have The 32X version, and then the censored re-release in the digital pictures"box" version. I do believe that savageone was talking about the original flimsy boxes sega cd orginally came in.

And the original release was in the original flimsy box.

Yeah definitely not looking at Night Trap but I guess that counts.. Difference is anyone into Sega CD knows about the 2 variations of Night Trap (3 for 32x) and not a lot seem to know about Rise of the Dragon. I was just assuming since ROTD had this variation there had to be 1-2 more that I'm not aware of. Strange that there would only be one...

swlovinist: So you have a complete Sega CD collection? Are there any other games (incl. variations) besides the box type RotD that a lot of people don't know about? (better yet that aren't on the DP rarity list, like the box type RotD)

Also, can you prove Championship Soccer '94 actually exists? I've never actually seen it. Renew my faith! O_O

Here is a picture of a complete Sega CD (US retail) collection.

Championship Soccer 94 certainly exists (1st column, 11th row) and I'm glad to hear someone thinks it doesn't. Actually, any sports game that's perceived scarce is MUSIC to the ears of most collectors! :) So thanks.

I'll try to remember to note the box variations on RottD, actually we've had this conversation before so I'm surprised it isn't already there - certainly an interesting anomaly in the Sega CD library.

Yes I have a complete sega cd collection. I also thank the DP advance book for doing a fine job of covering the Sega CD amazingly. I am currently working on my new "room of doom version 3.0." I will post pics of my collection soon(month or so). I can also confirm and have Champion Soccer 94. I bought my copy ROTD from the DP booth at CGE three or four years ago. Yet another reason to go to the shows. I cannot think of any variants the book has missed that were publically released.

DAMN... now I wish I'd kept the box for mine... I'm pretty sure I bought the boxed version as soon as it was released... who knew it would be a rarity?

Ah yeah, I see Championship Soccer '94 there. Never occurred to me to go sorting through the Rooms of Doom. It's very odd that I've never seen it. Usually sports games like that are sold by the dozens. Probably not worth a lot I suppose, but rarity and value don't always go hand in hand.

I definitely recommend noting the Rise of the Dragon box type variation on the list with a rarity of maybe a 5 or 6? It's definitely among the most rare of the Sega CD items.

Any ways, thanks for the answers guys! I sold off a good deal of my Sega CD collection but have been considering jumping back in so this helps greatly. Theres just something about the Sega CD..

*RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!*

I just got a copy of Super Monkey Island in a long jewel case thing. I thought that it only came in a regular box?

This is the only thread I found asking this question... and I didn't see it mentioned. Any help would be great.

(By the way, not planning on selling that anyway, but keeping for personal collection... LOVE that series :) )

It kind of looks like someone cut up the box on the back, there's some type of wear on the left side. Or is it just the picture?

Anyone know, was Championship Soccer '94 a rental-only game?
I thought I remember reading that it was some time ago.
At least, that would explain how a sports game gets rare.

Yeah, that Monkey Island box is definitely suspicious. I'd say that's a cardboard box cut up to fit a regular SCD case.

Yep, rental places did this all the time unfortunately with those cardboard box releases. It could also be a color copy/enlargement of the box scan. It certainly never had a retail release in that way as all of the plastic case Sega games have a very distinctive blue color scheme even if there are some minor variations to the design like with Snatcher.

Well aware of the cardboard box cut up thing but...

...in this case, it was a VERY well done forgery. They spent some serious time taking it apart and making it fit perfectly in there. It wasn't until I opened it up to take a picture of it out of the case to prove that it was legit that I was able to determine anything that shows that it wasn't.

Hunh. Sorry 'bout the false alarm there.

I have another variant (sorta) of ROTD. Several years ago I found a copy in thrift store (they had it in their display case) and when I opened it up (it is in a jewel box) the disc in it was blank and the instruction book had blank pages. The artwork for the case is all there - the only thing I can think of it was that it was a display copy for store use.

Hook was released in both also IIRC - although the jewel version was combined with 3 Ninjas Kick Back.

Nice catch on Hook, that's an obscure one that I wouldn't have thought about with the Double Pack.

Back on Rise of the Dragon though, does anyone have a cardboard box copy which has a different manual from the longbox release? My copy of the cardboard version (and the others I've seen so far), always have the regular Sega CD manual with the band of light/dark blue on the right.

Yes, there are three variants of Rise of the Dragon.

1) Cardboard box without the MA-17 sticker on the front and the original style manual.
2) Cardboard box with the MA-17 sticker and a candy stripe manual.
3) Longbox Jewel with the standard candy stripe manual.

However, the manuals for variant 2 and 3 are slightly different. The back page containing the warranty card is different. I don't have them with me at the moment, but I can post pictures tomorrow.

EDIT - Here are the two different manuals for 2 & 3 (the top and bottom respectively):

Sega started the colored stripes design when they released the Genesis 2 and Sega CD 2.
So, we can guess they were probably made in the order in the last post?

Thanks for the clarification SpaceFlea! Do you have a picture of the manual for the original version? Is it just that light blue color all around?

My original release copy is sealed, so I can't take a picture of the manual. But yes, it's that light blue color all around in the same fashion as the other old releases. You'll see them on eBay every once in a while, but it's certainly the least common one of the three.

EDIT: Here is the old thread from Sega-16 where we "discovered (http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?13706-instruction-manual-for-the-original-rise-of-the-dragon)" it...

Hmm, I'm pretty sure I have the original version of Rise of the Dragon, without the rating and stripes.
