Just recently bought a good looking cart of Final Fantasy on the NES at a local thrift. I cleaned the connectors and everything loaded up fine. I go to start new game, name my characters and then trouble starts...
The game begins, I see an air ship that I control on an all green screen that looks like grass. I can move the ship in any direction for about 4 or 5 spaces until what looks like the 8-bit equivalent of lighting strikes the screen, the screen darkens twice followed by a thunder sound effect and then the screen goes black. And it fucking stays that way. no music, no nothing. Just a black screen. Am I out 10 bucks? Am I being retarded and doing something wrong? Whats the deal, guys?

You have found the über-rare defective cart!

Well, maybe it's more common than that. If you really believe it's 100% clean and other games are working just fine on your NES then take it back. Looking at how it's a local thrift store though, meh. Chances are they don't accept returns and in that case you're out the few bucks. You can always hang the cart on the wall. :)

Your cart and/or system needs cleaning. 99.999999% of NES probelms are due to dirty or loose contacts.

Thats a very strange glitch...

i rmeeber having game genie codes that would change where and how you start the game, sounds alot like one of those codes..

i'd suggest taking the cart apart and remvoing the battery for about a day then reinserting it (or try playing it without the battery in tact)

if its not the previous save data being currupted then it might be simmilar to what happened to my contra.

you could play through the game once, but once you beat the first level on the second loop, it'd just crap out with a wierd flashing screen. eventually over about a year you could only beat the first level and get the same effect, now it just plain doesn't work.

only nes game I ever had that just plain died.

..or you could do this, take the cart apart like blitzwing said, But don't take the battery out yet..look at the ROM chip..push the ROM chip a little bit.I know this because my Zelda game cart on GB wasn't working..So I opened it up, Push lighty on the ROM chip..it worked..but releasing it, Crashed the Game..See if pushing on the ROM cart works

If it did that, the problem was a bad solder joint.
