ok so i am headed to japan it looks like and i was wondering, for those of you that have been there what are the odds of my being able to trade a US NES with controllers and all and my suplicates (commons) and trading it for a famicom and commons?

i am talking about a loose famicom and loose games. the reason i ask is it would be kinda cool and i really dont know how they are about import games and systems in their country, if theres alot of people that would be into it.

I don't think many would be into it. Western game systems don't seem to have much allure there at all. You see some Wetsern Atari and the like on occasion, but definitely only occasionally.

My experiences in trading in in Japan are quite poor -- they have very high expectations of quality (which is good as a consumer, bad as a seller) and the amount you get is pretty low.

You'd be better off unloading it locally, then taking the money and getting a system + games there. $50 can get you alot in Famicom land, if you know where to shop!

I bought a Famicom here (Japan) recently, from a really sweet retro store in Tokyo that had a ton of stuff. They had about 50 or so loose Famicoms, but I didn't see any American stuff there at all, except an Atari 2600 for like $150

Anyways, the Famicom I bought was about $50 complete, so I'd say sell your NES locally and just take the money. Carrying a NES and games would suck for luggage space too. Tons of Famicom games around here, even in the local book shops they'll have a lot of Famicom games. I have no idea about rarity here, but expect to pay about $20 for anything with Mario on it. Other games range from freakishly cheap (less than a dollar) to expensive. Sorry I can't say more than that. I hope you have a fun time poking around!

I going to be in Tokyo next week, and really can't wait to go game hunting. I found this great interactive map of Akihabara that might be of interest to some of you:

http://www.gamengai.com/akimap.php

It shows exactly where a lot of the game stores are. I've transfered a lot of this information to my own map. :)

I plan on grabbing some Famicom stuff while I'm there too. I can't wait!

I wouldn't bother bringing an NES. Unless you speak Japanese you're probably not going to have much luck trading anything to a game store. Mandarake in Nakano Broadway buys but only if you sign up as a seller with them. My friend sells to them and they were going to give me $70 for an Intellivision II but they couldn't get it to work on their tv so they didn't want it. Good luck!
