Which series do you prefer? To neophytes they may appear similar, but they're actually very different. I prefer the Gradius games myself -- they have fewer "cheap moments" than R-Types and require less memorization.

Gradius, please. But I much prefer the Parodious series; too much goofy fun!

I like them both equally, though I own more R-Type games than Gradius games (I still need to get Gradius V, though, and I'd like to get R-Types and R-Type Delta on the PlayStation someday).

I think the poll should be rtype or thunderforce. Although gradius 5 I like for some reason I can't get into the older gradius games as much

R-Type here, Only because it was one of the last arcade games I used to play as a kid, when arcades were worth going to.....

Oh, they're both so delicious. But I'm definitely more of a Gradius man meself. Gradius 3 is still one of my most treasured games in my collection.

Sadly, I haven't played many Gradius game. Whereas several R-Type games utterly sucked me in (especially the original on the SMS), so I had to go with that.

I love both, but I voted R-Type. I prefer R-Type's system.

R-Type for me. While I love Gradius, the dip in quality and cheapness that occured with entries III & IV left a bitter taste in my mouth, whereas I can't say I disliked any of the R-Types.

Gradius, not only is it one of the grand daddies of modern horizontal shmups (and the power up system at the time was unique), it also got parodied by it's own makers, the delicious fun of Parodius.

Gradius, better music, better gameplay, and I prefer the level designs for the most part.

I like R-Type's system better, but like the fact that Gradius is less of a memorize-em'-up...
hmm...can I call it a draw?
OK, R-Type gets the edge...barely.

I had to vote for gradius although I do favor the original R-type arcade over the first few gradius games.
Gradius 5 on PS2 was a godsend thankx to the 2-D gods at treasure.

I couldn't choose between to two so I selected the "both" option. They both share the common attributes of being extremely addicting and infuriatingly impossible at points.
R-type. I prefer the power up system

I voted for both. I think Gradius V was crap and boring and treasure ruined it by making the ship way to slow and making a small hit box for a horizontal shooter just doesn't work.:ass:

I gotta go with Gradius thanks to Gradius Galaxies for the GBA. Both are great series though.

I picked R-Type. I could never get into the Gradius games.
Plus I have fond memories of my friend and I staying up all one weekend, back when I was in 8th grade, trying to beat R-Type on the SMS. And how we discovered the way to get more credits without finding the code from a magazine or strat guide.
We found it completely by accident.

Funny that you should ask this now because I've been playing almost nothing but these classic shooters for the past few days. Especially R-Type and Gradius (and Parodius), in fact. And especially the SNES versions.
I like both series' a lot, but I give the edge to Gradius. Mostly for reasons that other people have mentioned like the abundance of cheap deaths in R-Type and the level designs and such.
Parodius definitely has even better style, design and obviously humor (GOT A STINKFOOT!) than Gradius or evcen other cute'em ups in my opinion, but I think most of the Gradius games are actually a little better as far as actual gameplay.
I'll have to check out the Darius games more, I haven't really played any of them very much. Which ones are the best (pre-Playstation)?

Never played an R-Type game and I'm not a huge shmup enthusiast. The only Gradius games I've really played were Gradius, Gradius 2 (via emulation), Nemesis and Life Force/Salamander (easily my favorite). So I voted Gradius by default. I think the "system" works fine in those games I've tried.

i enjoy both
if however the was an arcade with both games stood side by side, r-type is the game i would go for first.. it's the game i have the fondest memories of

I slightly prefer Gradius these days, probably because I enjoyed V and IV(which I hadn't played before) during the last generation. I haven't had fun with an R-Type game since the PS1.

I know, I know! Star Soldier! Did I get it? What do I win? LOL
Just kidding you, of course. :)
As for me, I've always liked Gradius more than R-Type. R-Type is great and all, but I enjoy the Gradius games so much more. If I could pin it down to just a couple of reasons, I would... but I can't.

I prefer Gradius cause it's more simple and straight forward which is the way I like my shooters.
R-type is a bit too complicated in structure for my taste. I just don't get that good twitch gameplay like I do with Gradius.
I don't like having to "charge my laser" to coin a phrase.

Both shooter series are the stuff of awesomeness but if I had to choose, I'd go with Gradius. Love the options power-up system, the music and the levels, even though I HATE Maoi Heads.
Of course R-Type's slower paced gameplay is also brilliant in its own right. Destroying giant battle ships will always be one of the greast things to do in gaming.

Actually, I prefer Vanguard or Jump Bug...but here, I'd choose Gradius.

R-Type for me. R-Type always gives you half a split second to plan and react, whereas Gradius relies too much on cadavre discipline and muscle memory to find the right path through the hostilities growing out of the background. And playing with the Force is very fun.
