In my youth, I'll say I haven't always been as calm as I am now. Things needed to be right, right now. Though true for many kids, I think that some get worked up too much like I have.
Come christmas some time ago, It was a big family get together where we opened presents and ate. My three uncles, their respectful others, my cousins, and my grandmother and grandfather. It always seems to be this way with everything in my family. We jam whatever and whoever we can into this one big event, like a "Christmas, Birthday, bris, etc. happy-fun-time party."
Anyway on one of those specific days, my uncle got me a certain shaped box.(You know what it is when you see it, Its a video game! Of course you know, you only dream about them and stare at the selection every time you're at Prange Way!)
So come opening time, I hastily await my turn, as we opened a present one at a time. Sweaty palms and anticipation feed me during these crucial minutes, and then it arrives.
I say "it's gotta be a game!"
My uncle joked , "who knows? Maybe it's a book."
I open, and what do you know? It's a copy of mega man 3!
Did you know that mega man 3 is my favorite game? In the whole wide world? Like I consider it the reason I still play older games to this very day? This should be the greatest day of my life!!!
Well, you are wrong.
Why not, you say? It would have been great if not for the simplest little fact:
I already had the game.
NOOOOOOO!
What was I to do? Well....cry of course.
Yes, I balled. Like a baby. "It's okay, we'll get you a different one". I didn't pay attention. All I cared of was this day, i did not get a new game, and was distraught by it.
After calming down, I realized it was not that bad. They didn't know what I had or what I wanted, so it was fine, and it ended up all right too.
Around february, I got picked up from the babysitter that night, and my dad said,
"Oh, Uncle Pepie got you this. Remember, from christmas?"
I opened the bag it was in, and I looked. "...Batman?....Return of the Joker?", I went.
"Wow, I never even heard of this coming out" I said, looking at the strange grinning face looking back at me. Because, as a kid, you know everything about video games, right? "Well, let's give it a try, " I said. And you know what? It's really my second favorite NES game now, and was a blast to play back then.
I'm glad that the incident happened with enough of a cusion to it. I don't think I looked like a jerk, but it's not the best way to react immediately. It was when I calmed down and talked to my uncle that it turned out alright.
Now that I am a collector, I know to take it easy now when we don't get that certain item. Anticipation of games and systems seem to get the best of our emotions at times. Even though we should be old enough to realize that, It doesn't always work out that way. I always think back to times like this to remind me:
There's a difference between reliving your childhood and acting like one.
