Um considering my FZ-1, FZ-10 and Goldstar 3DO all play CDR's i'd say probably fake. There's no encryption that i know of.
Have a picture?

My FZ-1 also plays CD-R's without a problem. What you are describing might be a press/programmer's machine. I remember something like this in an old NEXT Generation magazine, where they were showing the new FZ-10, goldstar, and Sanyo machines that had that switch. They explained how it would not be on the retail machines.

Is it worth $100?
I am 90% sure it is not fake as this guy is way trustowrthy and he said he got it from someone who wrote for a paper or magazine or somthing.
should i pick it up?

That all depends on how badly you want a 3DO. I'm a big fan of the system but i'd honestly say this still doesn't sound special. Considering the going rate for a 3DO is far less then $100 and this has no functional advantages i'd say haggle him down.

i'm almost completely sure its NOT a fake or modded. i've seen pictures of those before with the switch, pretty sure it is a programers machine. not really sure its worth $100 unless you collect those kinda things or you want to play beta games. if you just want a 3do to have one just get a regular one that does the same things or like Njiska said and haggle him down.
does it look like this?

It's definitely worth the $100. I can't believe the responses in this thread so far.
A regular 3DO might be able to read CD-Rs, but in the case of my FZ-1 that I just got last week, it gets fussy after it gets warmed up.

Heya, xfrumx, if you're that much in doubt about it, send me a message...I'll pay the $100 plus a small bit ($10?) for your time and effort...

but the only real advantage is that it plays games that have not yet been encrypted. A stock 3do won't do that, although a stock 3do will play cd-r's as someone already noted. Of course, I've collected 3do for years and only have a few unencrypted games, so I don't know if having that capability really matters to most people. Still, $100 isn't bad.

the back looks just like that but its an FZ-1 and the sticker on the front says like tester/programmer unit or somthing in a similar font
The same guy has the 3do gun for $25
I might try to get both for around $100

Just chiming in to second that this is a legit piece of hardware. It's a testing station. It's not needed to play CDRs of released games, but it is needed to play prototype/beta/homebrew software that hadn't been through the official 3DO licensing process.
The going rate for these seems to be around $100 or less, so this is a reasonably good deal.

This is good to know.
