I Finally got my NES
I really can’t remember what the first game I played was. As a very young kid I remember going to a cousin’s house in Chicago and seeing them playing some game but never paid attention to the name, thinking back now as a collector I realized it was Pitfall probably the 2600 version. I also remember a time when my parents went to some friend’s house of theirs and their son was playing Metroid on NES. Neither time got me very interested but I was bored so I watched for something to do. A few years later maybe 1st grade or so, my grandparents gave my parents my mom's old Atari 2600, Pong and TI99/4A computer. I remember it taking forever for them to get it hooked up and working properly. as they were working on it, I remember staring at the controllers and games and watching them play Space Invaders and Warlords forever but still gained no interest then either.
As time went on I started playing (I still can’t remember what my first game that I actually played was) and whatever happened I was hooked. The TI99 dissappeared and I never got the Pong working till later but I had over 30 games for the Atari as a kid and I was in heaven. I played everyone of them that I could figure out. I bragged to my friends about how cool my system was, some played as much as I did, others declined every time I asked. The time was the early 90s and they all had bigger and better systems so they were less interested but it was still the best to me. My gaming grew to adiction and my parents would constantly give me limited play time each day, I even hooked it up to the VCR and recorded the gameplay and made the kids my mom babysat watch the videos. I can also remember a time in 2nd grade when I was doing bad in school and my dad split my games in half, one half I got and the other half was put away and every week I did well in school I got one back. Man was that a bummer.
Time went on, I got a few new games, my console went through a flood and had to be replaced, the Pong died, and over time I was introduced to new game consoles and I finally realized what I was missing out on. My cousins had a NES at my Grandma’s house and playing Super Mario Bros. and Tetris was heaven on it. I played every moment I got and I played at every friend’s house that I could whenever they'd let me. Suddenly I grew quite disinterested in my Atari 2600 and begged for a NES for probably a year at least. My parents knew how much I played and they told me I probably can’t get one because I would play too much. I begged and begged and dreamed every time I went somewhere ther was one. Finally in 1992 my cries were heard, my mom told me my Grandma was gonna buy me one. Along came December and my Grandparents birthday gift for me was lean since I was born three weeks before Christmas, but man was I getting my hopes up. Christmas Eve came around, my Grandparents spent the night at our house along with my Uncle. Christmas morning I woke up excited as ever and we all started taking turns opening gifts and when we were all done my NES was no where to be found and my Grandma said “looks like your Nitendo didn’t come” but I knew they were pulling my leg. Sure enough my dad went into the basement and brought up one more gift and I ripped it open and sure enough there was my brand spanking new Nintendo. I rushed it down stairs to the TV, had my dad help me hook it up and I played until we had to leave that day to visit other family. Needless to say, in the time to come I would get yelled and grounded many a time for bad grades and playing too much. But that Christmas day may be one of the most beloved video gaming memories I will ever have. I have been hopelessly addicted ever since. I gave my Atari and all the games to my Uncle and told him don't ever get rid of it unless you give it to a family member. He still has it to this day.
Let me know how I did and any corrections and improvements I need to make.
