I was browsing youtube and found RetrowareTV's review of Snatcher for sega CD (retrowaretv.com btw for those interested, they seem to be a new site dedicated to short retro gaming reviews and such, they also have some clips from a NAVA event at Joe's store, very cool)
Anyway I never looked into this game much but found their video to make this game look so freaking amazing, I watched all 9 mins of the video to go onto ebay and see the fetching price for the game (I knew it was rare but...), damn over $100! I have paid big bucks for games like Panzer Dragoon Saga before, but I am just wondering if this game is really worth the price it demands. I am not a huge metal gear solid fan so I wouldent really be buying it just beause it is by Kojima, it would be more for the story and experience of playing through it for the first time.

Obviously, it depends on your own tastes, but I think that if you watched 10 minutes of it and liked what you saw, then yeah, you'll probably love the whole thing.
I'm not usually a fan of story-driven games, but Snatcher is one that I absolutely love. Its story is really clever and engrossing in a way that almost no other video game storyline that I can think of is.
It's one of those games that I think will be considered absolutely seminal in video games 50 years from now the way certain movies from the '30s and '40s are today. We're very lucky to have received an English translation and a pretty good one at that.
I actually got my copy of Snatcher for $7.98 from a regular online game shop and at a time when the game was already going for $70 or $80 on eBay. I don't know how it slipped through their system like that, but I'm glad it did because I probably wouldn't have dropped the big money on the game before I knew how good it was.

I didn't think I would like the game, but it ended up engrossing me. I get a kick out of using the Justifier Gun. I think the game is overpriced but it's more than worth it in gameplay if you can part with the cash.

The game is as good as everyone says it is but since it is entirely story driven you will most likely play it exactly once before it gets shelved. Although you will more than likely get back what you paid for it if you decide to give it a playthrough and sell it afterwards. So all said and done it's still not a bad investment.

I liked it a lot, though it's fairly derivative in a Kojima-meets-Bladerunner kind of way.
Playing on an actual SegaCD w/ a justifier for the shooting segments is really the only way to play, anyway. Playing those scenes with the gamepad just isn't nearly as fun :)

It's a good game but only worth playing once. You either buy it with the intent to resell it to recoup your money after you're done with it, or save yourself the trouble and burn an ISO of it onto CD-R. The Sega CD has no copy protection schemes.

I went through the same thing OP! :) I saw that retro TV clip too, and despite being a Kojima nut for years, that clip put me over the top.
I saw that pic of Metal Gear looking like a Genesis 2/Sega CD, and I knew I had to have it. Hopefully we'll each choose a different eBay auction to stalk :)
I think I know what I'm getting into... A gritty, Kojima-developed "Monkey Island"-style game sounds right up my alley!

I was thinking of doing that too... since the game is so rare.
I played it a few years back via emulation and I ended up beating it in one night, it's that good of a game. I usually get bored of those story driven games, but man does this game have one hell of a story. Only reason why I bothered checking it out was because of SD Snatcher and I'm glad I did.

It's probably the last great domestic commercial text adventure game. /hyperbole
Seriously. From a more rational stand point: The story is average and the gameplay is ok (the last chapter especially comes off a bit weak and it is a text adventure game with the occasional light gun area). What tends to shove this thing over the top, however, is the high level of presentation and detail Kojima's team put into it. The entire thing comes off as a labor of love and really makes the Sega CD look and sound like a potentially cool platform.
It's a must own for early adopters of the game, Kojimaphiles and Sega CD addicts (of which I am all three). Everyone else, YMMV.

If you're having trouble finding a proper image of it (BIN/CUE or similar), give a shout. Do not play the ISO+MP3 hackjob. Repeat: Do not waste your time with the ISO+MP3 hackjob. I will gladly rip an image from the original disc, compress it, and host it if it means saving someone from suffering through the headaches of trying to figure out why the ISO+MP3 hackjob that's floating around won't work properly in *insert emulator* or won't burn properly with *insert burning program*.

Snatcher is Hideo Kojima's finest moment. It's better than MGS, and better than any game in it's genre, including the Phoenix Wright games on the NDS.
Buy it regardless of the price tag. It's more than worth the entry fee.

Use any disc copying software that has a disc -> disc copying mode, really. If you're using CloneCD, you use the third option ("Copy CD"), if you're using Nero you click on Recorder -> Copy Disc, etc.

No, that's a sure-fire way to screw it up.

For free, there's always BurnatOnce (http://www.burnatonce.net/) (basically CDRDAO (http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/) + a frontend)

I know the CD add-on for the TG16 works with CD-Rs, not sure about the Duo though. I've never had the chance to try it. When burning slower is always better. The difference between 1x to 4x is fairly negligable so 4x is a good speed. Also DOA (Disk-At-Once) or SOA (Session-At-Once) can help. Especially if your patching an image to change it's region.
Also, the ISO/MP3 of Snatcher I recently burned works like a charm. I have noticed one or two parts of off-sync audio... but, nothing fatal to the game.

It's like BladeRunner but with Terminator enemies rather than replicants. The story is what drives it, even if it borrows heavily, with lots of speech. It gives you sense of wanting to explore an area for clues and stuff just to find out what happens next. Gunning the insectors and snatchers are no problem. Only the last chapter's shoot outs are somewhat challenging.

That's a random thing some do some won't.
Most of what i've herd it depends on what cd-drive, is in the console.

As long as you use some decent media and burn from a quality source: yes.

Snatcher is fantastic and is completely worth the price of admission. Along with Star Control II, I think it's one of the finest examples of complex story telling to ever grace a console.
That Retroware TV episode almost underplayed how much back story you can find at the JORDAN computer. This is a very well realized world with a good deal to learn.
Most people complain about the games "length" but any fan of adventure games know how they're paced so this should not be a dissuasion from playing.
The amount of “adult” content included is pretty amazing too. It’s pretty wild to go back and see how much Konami and Sega got away with while games like Night Trap and Mortal Kombat were taken to the cross.
Yes. Buy the game. Flip it if you don’t want to keep it and make all your money back. But by judging your taste in games, you’ll want to keep this one around. I promise.

time to put out my two cents in i guess. When John and I first thought of doing Retroware TV, Snatcher was on the top of the list of games I knew we had to cover. John as you can see is a HUGE Snatcher fan. That said, I personally didn't play the game till a couple years ago when John turned me on to it. In the past I really did not care for the style of gameplay the Snatcher has. Even when I first picked up the game and started playing I really didn't care for it. HOWEVER, after the first 10 minutes or so I was hooked. As everyone has said, it is the story that makes the game. It really draws you in and makes the game. With out a doubt it is a great game. The cost though is a little crazy. I was lucky that John still owned the game from when he bought it when the game was originally released so I was able to borrow it and test it out. It is on my to buy list, and yes you can make a copy of it really easily but if your a die hard kojima fan and love this game as much as I do, you will find yourself needing to buy the original.

Snatcher is worth it for Sega CD if you like shooters. Just play the regular game until you get to a fight scene and break out the justifier ( whatever gun that can be used with game. ).
Also a bonus the game was made only in English for the Sega CD. All the Japanese versions of the game is no diffrent at all but is not on the Sega CD.
So yes it is worth it to get the that FM sound also.
