Hey all,

I'm the UK and bought an xbox 360 in the middle of April, on tuesday night i was playing Gears of Wars online, and i'm playin away.. gettin my ass handed to me in the Mansion, then all of a sudden, i hear a loud grinding and clunking sound, I spring off my chair and hit the power button, to try and save the damn thing. (Bear in mind the console has never been played standing up, its always laying flat on its side.)

The top of the Gears disk is scratched (not the bottom) but every other disk i tried after that, all i get is unplayable disk, and when i do insert a disk i just get a heavy sounding clunking noise like a motor is jammed, so the drive is dead, i call the shop i bought it from and they tell me i'm a week over my 28 day returns. (i bought it online)

So i call xbox and they go through (what sounds like) the usual steps, then the guy tells me they will send me some UPS labels, put my 360 into a box and send it back.

I asked if i'd get my original console back or would it be a refurb and he said no, you'll just get a refurb, now i'm not all that bothered, as long as it works i'm ok with that, BUT, Should i really be getting a refurb when i'v just had the console for 4 weeks??

Just wondering before i send it back to M$ do i have the right to ask for a new console since i had it just 4 weeks??

A buddy of mine has his 360 for nearly a year and had no problems, and he was saying that he thought it was BS i was sending back a brand new machine and maybe getting an older console back?

Any ideas guys? :beaten:

Predatorxs,

As you probably already know, many, many people have had their 360 die on them, often after a very brief period of ownership.

Before you consider sending it back, I would recommend you read and try this: http://www.gametab.com/news/903683/

If that doesn't work, I think you'll have no other option but to send it back to MS. They can pretty much dictate the terms of their warranty, and if that means sending you a different refurbished unit, then I think that's their prerogative. I hope the 360 they end up sending you has a bit more longevity.

I have to send mine back as well.. not quite a red-ring yet, but it freezes constantly. :( Why don't they have these problems fixed yet???

Welcome to the club!

Seriously, I had the same thing happen last year. I bought a premium 360 and it lasted 2 months before freezing and I got the 3 lights. I was lucky that the thing came back on and I sold it and am now waiting for the new revision coming out later this year/early next year.

Yea I'm on my 2nd 360. The turn around time is decent. Takes a little over a week to get one sent back to ya.

Now, I have to send my 2nd one out again? Why you ask? When I get my 2nd replacement, the case had a 4 inch crack in it. It doesn't effect the game play, but I think I deserve a case that is not cracked.

Wow, that's a bummer. Was your replacement an earlier-dated system by any chance? I'm just wondering if the new MS policy of returning the same one you bought after repairs has kicked in yet instead of getting someone else's old machine.

You know I never checked that. Honeslty I really dont care if its the same or different one. I just want one that is not cracked, doesnt freeze and no red rings.

Also its only the drive everyhing else works fine i can still use games i'v downloaded, and i can still chat with people, but the damn drive is dead.

And about the console, its good there fixng my console, but i don't want an older console, mine is still box fresh, i have had visions of someone elses ruffed up case being sent to me, i'm gunna ring MS and see what happens?

i have already got in touch and the UPS labels are on there way, but i'm going to ring and see what else they can do. I'm nothing special when it comes to being an xbox consumer (there are hundreds if not thousands of people that have been in the same position i find myself).

But i'm thinking i just paid out for a brand new console, now i might end up with an old system? the main thing is getting it repaired. But i like my box fresh console as well. :(

Since it's so new, have you tried taking it back to the store you bought it at? Surely the store must have a 30-day return policy at least, and most are willing to give a little on that (by going a few days over the policy, I mean)

Predator already said he tried returning it, but it was past the store's return date.

Are the Elite systems more reliable? I'll be getting a 360 later this year for GTAIV and I'm wondering how long I should wait before picking one up.

Does UK have any warranty rules in general or is it totaly upto each store to each store? You mention 28 days return, does this even goes as warranty? If so, 28 warranty is nothing :\

From what I've read on the internet and seen with my friend's Elite, they are basically the same machines except for some slight power modifications on the board (something about going from 4-cycle to 3-cycle power?!?). My friend's Elite has the real loud DVD drive, much louder than the new premiums with the BenQ drive. Sucks, but I'm going to force myself to wait to the holidays and get one then when, hopefully, a redesigned model hits. Or, at least, MS stops all of the giving back older consoles when yours breaks nonsense.

Generally as a rule, shops & stores have a 28 day return policy, thats when the manufacturer comes in, So its up to microsoft now.

I did get back onto the shop i bought it from, but no dice, but i have UPS coming for it monday so hopefully all shall be sorted with in the next 10 days! give or take a day or two?

I just wanna get back online, i thought ebay was addictive, but live is better LOL :hail:

And i'm neglecting my poor Wii, so i'll play that while my box is off to be fixed.

Wow that sucks, sounds familiar to the PS2 dre horror stories back then. And I was planning on getting a 360 Elite too, I guess I'll wait until they take care of all these problems.

To answer the question about the elites yes they did fix many problems including the gpu and cpu thermal paste and/or epoxy. They have also changed the way it uses power. Go with the ELITE.

They seems to be using the same power according to this site.

I had two brand new minty fresh 360s go on me, so I decided that I wouldn't allow the opportunity for a third. It leaves a bad taste to the point where you don't trust the damned thing anymore. You end up waiting for or looking for things to go wrong. Looking at the current overly shooter-heavy library, I'm not exactly missing the lack of an MS console in the house at this moment. I ended up with a rock solid Wii in exchange for the 360. Duration-wise, it's outlasted both 360s lifespans.

Im no expert but i do know for sure that the motherboard layout of the elite is quite different. Not only becuase of the HDMI port on it but It has been changed to modify how it uses power.

Well bless my soul. Today I was preparing for some holiday gaming and I powered up my 360 and behold 3 red ring of death. I was always on the outside of the bubble and now I am on the inside and it sucks. The system has been taking care of none smoking home and dam near in the same place since I purchased it.

I called ms and it of course it is out of warranty. I bought mine at launch They wanted 140.00 I was pissed to the point of just chucking in the towel.
I bitched and moaned they dropped the price to 100.00. Today I am just totally pissed off.

All the money I spend through live ,games and
mag sub. They should have done it for free. I will be sending someone a serious letter. 400.00 for 16 months plus another 100.00 for a recreational gamer is rediculous.

Last week my 360 went out while playing a game of Worms. I was about to win Challenge #16 ... I go up and fire the last shot and ... *lock*. Reboot, 3 rings of death. I coax it (read, screamed at it for a bit) to work for a couple more days and then no more. I called up Microsoft since I'm still under warranty (got it in November). One of the odd 'troubleshooting' questions they asked me is if I had it hooked to a surge protector. I said it's hooked to a voltage-regulated UPS. They said, "well that's probably the issue." Sorry? Explain that? "Oh well if you put anything in-line, it lowers the available voltage (should be amperage) to the 360 causing it to work harder and overheat". So... the 360 requires 120V at 30A to work properly? I'm having a hard time with that. Besides, the UPS ensures a clean signal to the 360 ... and then I had to explain to him what a UPS was...

They got all my information and stated a box should be at my house in 2-3 days (it's been a week so far) and they'd give me a "free month of Xbox Live for my troubles". I told him I was already a subscriber and he said "well you can use it for an extra month since you'll be without your Xbox". Gee, thanks.

The crazy part is With mine officially breaking everyone that I know that bought there system at launch. had to send theres back.
What type of fools paradise was i living in. Don't get me wrong I love the the 360 but man.

I should have took gamestop up on there trade in for the elite offer. Here I am stuck on the fact that it was a launch system.

also in the uk a few people have said they have had letters from MS telling them they now have a two year warranty instead of just one! when im on the phone again to MS im gunna ask about that and see if i can get me some of that too!
