First, is it just me or do the mission logs have tons and tons of typos? I was wondering if these were fixed in the Greatest Hits release.

Second, does the PS2 Smoothing Option... do anything? I tried out the game and I swear I noticed no difference whatsoever with the graphics. Maybe I just didn't see anything.

Finally... what the hell is that last codec code? There's seven used slots and one left. Was it used? Or is it just dummied-out space?

1. No, it's not just you, and I have an original release copy so I can't say for sure whether they were fixed. My guess is no.

2. I'm not going to be much help here since I haven't played through the game on a PS1 in probably five years or more. I never noticed anything all that different but some swear by it, so I don't know.

3. On this one, however, I'm pretty sure it's just dummied out space. Having played through it about a dozen times, I always wondered if there was another codec to go in there, but without checking GameFAQs or anything, I'm 99% sure it's just empty space.

That's too bad on that last one. I always thought it would be funny if there was a codec frequency where Solid Snake could talk to himself.

With the texture smoothing while it does change the image slightly, some textures get shifted to the right by about ten pixels so I dont use it. Gran Turismo has the same glitch with the tree textures being shifted.

In regards to the smoothing technique on the PS2, I think it makes the game look even better. Its not perfect, mind you, as some objects become a bit see-through and some textures become worse (maybe only two instances I can think of, one being the pure white sky at the end of the game), but it mostly is great imo. From the characters to the land, it still looks good even today. If you wanna see the real difference, watch a cutscene. One of the first that its really prominent is the jail cell scene with Anderson (specfically the walls).

The texture smoothing does improve the overall "jagginess" of the PS1 original I think the "smoothing" helps greatly especially for Metal Gear Solid 1 and makes it far less painfull to look at when compared to todays games.

I actually recommend the Bleem disc for the original MGS. Makes a world of difference compared to the smoothing option.

Meh. I actually prefer my games all jaggy. :p

Thanks for your answers.

Actually, I think the last codec is a special one you can find online. You get a message from one of the team members. Check out GameFaqs, I guess.

I already did. There's nothing there...
