I was experimenting with Phoptoshop to see what kind of results I would get. One suggestion I got was to make it green with red dot. Well, a picture is worth 1,000 words so...

As you can see it looks so sick! :P (I spent only about 5 minutes in Photoshop so the image isn't pro looking)

My ultimate goal is to make my GC mostly black with dull yellow trim. (Why do you think I was asking about Atari style fonts a while ago? 8) ) The biggest challenge is the faux woodgrain on the front.

I could use contact paper but it would cover up the indentations on the piece (controller port # and memory slot #) plus it'd be hard to affix the sheet around circular openings and the paper would eventually shrinjk over time so it would reveal the plastic underneath.

I could try using woodgrain paint but I don't think such paint exists. I could apply brown paint and then brush on dark brown and black strips but I'm no artist so it'd look more like a toasted zebra. :P

Lastly, I could try making a panel out of a real wood. It'd probably the easiest way to get it to look good but it would also take the most time. Plus I haven't done any woodworking since I graduated from high school 9 years ago. I do have a Dremmel set so that's a plus.

Any suggestion for easy wood panel on the front controller port panel?

(PS this is take 2. I thought I had it posted but I must have hit preview rather than submit :P)

Use the contact paper/wall paper but dont use it over the center controller ports/memory card slots. Leave that white or paint it and use the contact paper every where else. the whole unit doesn't have to be wood grain. I think it would be overkill.

I don't understand why people insist on painting consoles. OK, maybe I can kind of understand. Same reason people custom paint their cars. Still, it jsut seems like a lot of work, especially when it doesn't make the console actually work better.

Anyways, I think you should just use contact paper to simulate the woodgrain. Painting it would be a big hassle, and you won't be able to really cut a solid piece of wood the way you need it with a dremel tool.

Actually, I just thought of something. You could buy a roll of oak laminate. You could get a roll big enough to cover about 10 GC controller ports for about $15. You can get it at most any lumber yard. Anyways, it is pretty thin suff, and you could cut it with a razor knife, and it would give a nice finished edge. Then, use contact cement to glue it to the face of your GC. Then, stain it what ever color you want it, and then throw on a couple coats of polyurethane, and viola! There is your cool custom woodgrain controller port.

(yes, I know this post is 5 years old)
