I had my true start as a video game player at home back in 1988 when I was 9 going on 10 with me playing Atari 2600 games on my Atari 2600 Jr. A year later my brother and I got an Atari 7800 for Christmas with games like Ballblazer, Mario Brothers and Joust. The 2600 Jr. was given to one of my brother friends in 1990.
I was a big Fan of the 7800 version of Double Dragon in 1990-1991. I bought the game in late December of 1989, and I got hooked on. I found out the game had an ending and played feverishly to beat the game for 3 weeks after I was done with my homework. After I finally beaten the games, I considered it as my greatest moment as videogame player with 1988 to 1991 despite, the fact the ending was lame to me I was very excited about beating it. The friends I had at the time were asking me about it everyday and when I defeated it, it was a great feeling and I still played the game after I defeated it due to the fact I liked it so much.
By December of 1991, my younger brother and I had a collection over 130 2600 and 7800 games by going to flea markets and buying 7800 games on clearance. The flea markets my brother and I went for loose Atari 2600 games were anywhere from getting 10 2600 games for $2.50 to 3.00 dollars a game depending on the stand. I was playing all the games we bought. Some of the highlights for games we bought were River Raid, Adventure, California Games, Stargate, Frogger, Kangaroo, Keystone Kapers, Astroblast, Millipede, moon patrol, Enduro, Yar's Revenge, Centipede-2600 and 7800, Food Fight, One-on-one Basketball ,and Xenophobe-7800. 1991 was the last year I bought any 7800 or 2600 games. I didn’t buy 7800 and 2600 games for a long time.
From 1988 to the end of 1991, my brother and I had had friendly competitions with Atari games. The first game we played against each was RealSports Football. We played the game on the same night that my dad and I bought the 2600 Jr. earlier in the day when I was 9 years old. I bought that game, when my dad and I got the system. I remembered that game as my brother and I competed against each other like it was it just happened. My dad decided to hook the system in the front room and RealSports Football was put in the system. I remembered our parents seeing us play against each other. My dad was cheering me on to make a comeback with the game being a close game with my younger brother winning it 42 to 35. I was not angry about it, but I remembered I felt deep down inside of me it was a fluke with him winning it. My brother and I played the game plenty of times between 1988 and 1991. During these times, I found out he was good at that game, so it was not much of an embarrassment a couple years later. The Atari 7800 games we competed against each other a lot was Ballblazer, football, Food Fight, Dig Dug and Rampage for the 7800. The 2600 games we competed against each a lot was Astroblast, River Raid, Boxing, and Bowling. Out of these games for the 7800, my favorite competition with him was with Ballblazer, we were winning back and fourth with us having a series matches like 4 games of Ballblazer a day. For 2600 games, my favorite Competition was in River Raid. In River Raid, my brother trying his hardest to score higher then I was. When we were competing in River Raid, he game me a run for my money. Booth us enjoyed the rivalries had.
My brother and I got a Nes for Christmas of 1991 and a year later, a Sega genesis. By the time my brother and I own a genesis, the 7800 was put away and all the 2600 and 7800 games were put to a box for storing them as a result of us no longer playing Atari games, but Nintendo games along with the lack of space for video games at the time.
From 1993 to 2002, I got a 32x, a Playstation, Sega Master System, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Sega Dreamcast, and a Ps 2. During this time, I kept the 7800 system and the games for the 2600 and the 7800. During this time, I was still a retro gamer due to the fact I was still playing Nes, Genesis, Sms games and enjoying old games as much as the new games I own on the Playstation one, Sega Dreamcast and the Playstation 2.
Back in September 2002, I decided to take the 7800 out of the box and some of the games that I owned. I started playing games like Midnight Magic, Jungle Hunt, River Raid, and Food fight and I was enjoying them like I did when I was younger. My brother and I played Bowling, Food fight, River Raid and Ballblazer on the same day I hooked up the system. We enjoyed playing the games against each other, and my younger brother told me that Ballblazer was still was as a great game as it was when he was a kid and this was 11 years later as an adult. I still like all the games I liked the first time around. The only difference was I don’t like Double Dragon on the 7800 as much. What happened was I played a lot version of Double Dragon since 1991, and I felt like the game wasn’t as good as it should’ve due to the fact own Midnight mutants and I am more aware of what sound chips that the Atari 7800 used like the one for Ballblazer. started to buy Atari 2600 and 7800 games again backing 2003 and I am still doing that today with me playing the games I bought with me taking turns to play every system that I own, something I didn't do prior to 2002. Some of the games I purchased after 2002, were Pitfall 2, Radar Lock, and Solaris. I have a lot fun playing these games and I was surprised how much of a difference these games were compared to the other 2600 games I own from 1988 to 1991. The closest thing to how advanced those games were was Road Runner for the 2600 prior to buying the games I mentioned.
