Are there any substantial differences between the two console ports of Turrican? I own it for Genesis, and I was just wondering if it'd be worth it to get rid of it in favor of tracking down the TG16 version. I'm sure the Amiga version is better than both, but I won't be getting an Amiga anytime soon.

The Turbo version of Turrican is a shoddy port of a lacklustre port (that being the Genesis version).
The Turbo version is missing a few levels (the auto-scrolling stages, I think, for one), plus it has smaller sprites (!!! when the TG hardware can do larger sprites than the Genesis), and some screechy music. Avoid.
Better yet, play the Amiga original.

I'm not a huge Genesis fan. I have played Turrican on both systems one time or another. I prefer the TG16 one. Only because I like the turbo d pad more than the genny one. I beat the TG16 one, took me a while but it was cool. Played the Genesis version and it's fine, the sounds are diffferent, but the controller, blah...

Why would you have to "get rid of" the genesis version as a precursor to obtaining the TG16 one? It's not like you're contemplating a new car or house. Why not have both?

I wouldn't necessarily get rid of the Genesis version before getting the TG16 version, but if the Genesis one was inferior, I wouldn't keep it around after having acquired the better version. I only keep multiple versions of the same game if they each offer different advantages or there's some other particular reason to have both. If it's the same game with only a difference in graphics or something, I'm just gonna go with the better version and that's it. I try to keep my collection "at bay" to an extent; if there's one particular version of a game that's gonna be the only one I'll be playing, I see no reason to have lesser things that I have no reason to play just taking up space. I try to keep my collection free of worthless games, and I consider lesser ports to be pretty worthless.
ccovell: Thanks for clearing it up. I wish there was a "the many faces of..." type thing for 16-bit era games.

^^^ Well, alright. I'm very obsessive and love to have several different versions of everything. I'm also a major pack rat. That's why it seemed such an alien concept to me. I'm sure you have a lot more open space in your home than I do. :-D

I'm a pac-rat too, but I only have so much space and cashflow; I like to spend both somewhat wisely. Okay, you could argue that buying a ton of games is not wise in any way, but, you know what I mean. :p

Some might argue that it's unwise but not me. ;) I can't seem to stop or even proceed in moderation. I've got a really small house and it's just crammed with consoles, vintage computers and myriad of games for all the above, plus other miscellaneous items. I'm certain that even if I had three times the amount of space it would only reach this point again down the road. I just need to get more creative with techniques of storage and display.

There were two Turrican games on SNES, but they're both unique to the system.
There was an NES version, but I heard it sucks. And there's also a Game Boy version, which I know sucks.

The NES version is ok in my opinion. What i dont like about it is that you have to walk like 70% to either direction before the map scrolls. Usualy games have like 50% (center screen) before the map scroll if you know what i mean. This makes it sometimes harder to see when the enemies are comming. I dont recall playing any other versions of Turrican (altho maybe i played the GB) so i dont know if those versions got the 70% scroll thingie too, but i wouldnt like that no matter what version it was :\

I'd forget about Turrican on TG-16 and look for Mega Turrican on Genny instead. Factor5 did an amazing job on the game and you owe it to yourself to play it. :) If you already have it then bully for you!

The snes versions are pretty solid titles, in this opinion, 2 was a bit hard to find. But that neither helps you or comes close to answering your question. so on that note....
btw, I can't fucking stand having two games of the same title for different systems either, rock on!
Personally, I'd smash the hell out of your genesis copy using your bare hands and some karate.

Mega Turrican is the only game in the series that I don't have in some form. I've been looking for it for quite some time; a complete US copy has been hard to come by.
