Hi

Please, please, please can someone help a complete noob with the naming of these games. I would like to play these in order from FF1 on the NES to FF6 on the SNES. However the naming system is just all over the place. FF2 (US version) on the SNES is actually FFIV in Japan.

Can someone please give me the 6 games in chronological order that are in english by way of an official release or translation patches.

Also, is Kain's ability in FFII (FFIV US) to jump just useful with spears or other weapons also?

Thanks in advance
Sam

PS: Sorry if this is a question asked alot, but I am sick at the moment and will be for a while and these games help keep my spirits up. :)

Final Fantasy (NES)
Final Fantasy II (Famicom - there are English translated ROMs readily available online)
Final Fantasy III (Famicom - same as II)
Final Fantasy IV (Super Famicom FF IV Hard Type, the US FF II is the dumbed down and horribly translated easy type, there are excellent English translated ROMs available online)
Final Fantasy V (Super Famicom - never released in US, English translated ROM easily available online, one of the very first Japanese-English translation projects)
Final Fantasy VI (SNES FF III, the same as the Japanese, just in English, there are other alternative English translations available)

FFV and VI are also available on FF Anthology for PSX.

I've found that the Wiki pages are pretty clear on what's what.

Final Fantasy I is Final Fantasy I everywhere. Shouldn't be confusing there.

What Japan knows as Final Fantasy II and III did not initially come out in English. Thus, when Final Fantasy IV (SNES) came out in English, they called it Final Fantasy II, since it was the second English Final Fantasy.

Likewise, Final Fantasy V did not initially come out in English, so Final Fantasy VI became Final Fantasy III.

After VI, they corrected the English numbering, so every game from VII up to infinity is numbered universally.

The NES games are:
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy III

The SNES games are:
Final Fantasy IV (called FFII on English SNES)
Final Fantasy V
Finaly Fantasy VI (called FFIII on English SNES)

So there are three Final Fantasies that originally did not come out in English. HOWEVER, not only have all of these games since been rereleased in English officially, their original versions also have translation patches, which you should be able to find easily on Google.

FF1 and FF2 were rereleased in English as Final Fantasy: Dawn of Souls for the GBA with updated graphics and features.

FF3 was rereleased in 3D with WAY updated graphics, plot, features, and WiFi capabilities for the DS.

FF4, 5, and 6 were rereleased on PS1 with longer load times and some added cinematics. I do not recommend these versions of these games.

4, 5, and 6 have also all been rereleased for the GBA with some small additions like extra dungeons and a couple new jobs in FF5.

So if you want to play 2, 3, or 5 in English, either use the translation patches or get the new versions for GBA/DS. 1, 4, and 6 are perfectly playable on NES and SNES, respectively.

I'll be using "Final Fantasy IV (J) [T+Eng3.21_J2E].smc" for FFIV, sound good?

Personally just play them on emulators via your computer or PPC if you don't want to buy the pointless GBA or PSX games. Play the originals from one to six.
Personally the first three is choatic enough and the fourth has two seprate versions.

You don't really need translation patches to finish these games or enjoy them.
