I have two Wiimotes. I can only turn on my Wii with one of them. Is this normal? Every time I go to play two player on Wii Sports it only shows one controller connected, and we have to hit buttons 1+2 to sync up the second remote. If I try and sync it up before that point (like during the Wii's main menu) all the blue lights on the remote flash for a while but it never syncs. Is this normal behaviour? I have swapped batteries in the Wiimote and un/plugged the console from the wall, neither of which fixed the problem (if it is one).

well i'm in the same boat as you. and this is with a brand new set-up, so i'd like to know what the deal is also.

Weird....

Try unplugging the power from the system itself and popping the bateries out of both controllers. Once having done that resync them both one at a time. Hopefully that should fix the issue at hand. I can start up my system with any of my controllers and that controller detects as #1 when I do that.

We've got 4 Wii-motes and havn't had that kind of a problem (but we have lost sync once or twice before for no aparent reason when we had just a pair) and have had to unplug the power cord from the system to get them to re-sync properly.

PapaStu hit the nail on the head. Resync everything, and you should be ok. Do you have your machine online? If so, do a system update just for shits and giggles.

To permamently sync a new remote with your wii you have to press the button under the battery cover and the button under the memory card cover on the wii. From then on you won't have to sync it anymore.

thanks, that seems to have done the trick. I also didn't have to unplug anything.

Yeah, there are two ways to sync a Wiimote: one is the temporary way, and one is the permanent way. What you're doing is only temporarily syncing. The red button under the battery cover syncs the remote permanently.

The reason it's probably only happening with your second Wiimote is because you probably got that one separately from the Wii.

Yeah it's actually all in the owner's manual for the Wii.

Ah, good old RTFM.

I had the same problem with mine when I got it - pissed me off until I read the damn manual.

All of this is true about the "permanent" vs. temporary method, but I still have mine lose sync from time to time using the "permanent" method. It also normally takes some of that battery removal mumbo-jumbo to get it to re-sync. This is guaranteed to happen when I am planning to play a quick game and only have 10 minutes or so.

I only knew of the permanent one hah.

Perhaps the remote loses the sync data if the battery juice gets too low or batteries are not present for a certain span of time? I dunno, this has never hapened to me.

i had a huge problem with my remote when i bought a 2nd one, where it would glitch out then glitch back on, itd cut off, then make a sound and the 4 lights would blink and itd turn back on and be back to normal. itd shut off complete then make a noise turn back on and all 4 would blink. i ended up selling that remote as is. I hope its not a wii problem.

This is what ended up working for me. As stupid as this sounds I'd never opened the front panel before. I kept looking on the side near the GC ports. Once I found the stupid red button in the front I synced the second remote and it's worked ever since.

I've had similar experiences also and I have tried using the re-sync buttom on the remote and the system and still have troubles. I think I'm going to just unplug the system, recharge all the batteries, and do the sync to each remote. Hopefully that will work alright.
