Hello everyone!

Just curious as to your experiences and what was great about the Philly Classic this year. It would be nice if you could enlighten all of us who could not attend (like me). Thanks for your posts in advance, much appreciated.

Danny

Hope to see you all in Vegas this year, I will bring the chips. :D

I had a good time. Was there all day Friday and most of the day Saturday.

Admission was a little high, and you definitely got the best stuff the first day, but the guests like Cindy Morgan and Sid Meirer showed up Saturday.

Smaller turnout than last year, and some vendors didn't show, but it was certainly worth the trip.

I had a blast! Granted it was my first show so I have no point of reference. I was there Saturday only (just got back from a 12 hour drive!). There was a lot of nice stuff to look at (like finally seeing a silver gravitar!), but I think I was pretty good at not going too apeshit on spending. ;) It was nice finally meeting some of the board members in person. Beyond the buying and trading and meeting folk it was neat to see the Adventure II in progress homebrew for the 5200, the coming soon UA games for 2600, and picking up a signed Stunt Cycle. Also, I have to thank Ianoid for being a really cool trader!

My loot:
A 5200 with "broken" Sticks + 2 games
Turbo Grafx Legendary Axe I+II
A few common Saturn Games + import Policenauts
Several missing 2600 manuals including Dolphin, Beamrider, and Pitfall II
Master Builder, King Kong, Demolition Herby, and Strategy X!
Activision Anthology for $15!

I had a great time and will hopefully be less shy and meet more folks at the next show!

It's just me or the admission and table price was a problem this year ?

So, which vendors didn't show? I was surprised that the show is reported to have had less attendees this year.

I read elsewhere somebody bought Old Guru's "Castle Blast: Philly Classic 4 Special Edition" ... as a CB fan myself, I wonder .. what was new/different about this S.E.? Anyone know?

What were people's thoughts to Stunt Cycle? How much did it cost?

Ever if I wasn't able to attend, I think this year's CGE will be ever hotter, as we will probably see Adventure II and Pleiades getting released. I just can't wait! :D

Cafeman: it was really cool to see Adventure II, I hope to have a working joystick before you release it!

Stunt Cycle was $45. I played it a few times there and ended up getting it. It's cool that there's another paddle game, but I think what impressed me the most was the packaging. But first impressions are good.

Cheers,
Ben

@le geek: thanks, glad you got a kick out of seeing Adv II! I saw in a picture that AtariAge had it in the arcade-size cabinet for a while -- cool! Adv II is further along than what was shown there, but lots of stuff doesn't work quite right yet so I didn't have it in the demo ... I'm going to release a demo online very soon, maybe this week.

Hmm... Unfortunately I don't think I will be going... :(
But perhaps if you DP guys can pay my airplane trip just to have me sitting there autographing that many SIC copies... :D

I'm working on a full report with pictures and whatnot, but here are a few bullet-point highlights from my POV.

-Met lots of forum members for the first time, including Cheese, le geek, and GrandAmChandler, and met up with lots of others who are always great to catch up with.

-Attendance was significantly down from last year. I can't imagine why, the show didn't change too much, there were lots of giveaways and things going on and the atmosphere was the usual, casual, fun-place-to-be... perhaps the struggling economy and the war are keeping people home and their wallets shut tight?

-"Game of the Show" is Adventure II. I mean... WOW. I'm continually amazed with the advances our modern day game designers are making with vintage systems.

-Prices went from very good to very high. A boxed Vectrex was purchased by the table next to me for $75, and across the room a loose Condor Attack was being sold for $225. Though I've only seen this game once prior to Philly, I saw it go for $100 and $150 respectively elsewhere on the floor. You simply HAD to shop for the best prices.

-I've got Condor Attack now.

-"Cheese"s real name is "Cheese". =)

-Everyone had a DP Collector's Guide. If they didn't have one going in, they had one going out. Does my heart proud.

-I hereby vow that I will never drink alcohol again, at least until next Friday.

-Portnoyd's Silent Service cartridge was signed by Sid Meier "I didn't write this game, douche". My CPU Bach for 3DO was signed "You R The Man". This proves that I'm cooler than Portnoyd, not that this was ever a doubt.

-Cindy Morgan has fake boobs.

-Mike from Collector's House had the best deals overall at the show (he was the first table as you walked in), and a great selection of old and new.

-I'm going to need some more sleep now.

Hey hey, it says online that he developed the damn game... kiss my ass :D

And Cindy Morgan is definitely upperclass MILF quality.

Overall, a great weekend. You definitely had to go slow and search before buying or else some tables would suck your wallet dry.

My favorite table was Mike Mize (sp?)'s table. Great selection, friendly guy, great prices.

I also had a great time, at PC4, I finally got a hold on a copy of Carrier Aces fopr SNES that I have been looking for a long time! :-) Nice seeing people from this board, especially DP, and portnoyd for shopping at my table! :-)

"-Cindy Morgan has fake boobs" Is this proven? lol

I talked to Cindy and these were my 2 favorite quotes when asking her about members of the cast "Caddyshack"....

"Chevy Chase is an Asshole"

"Rodney Dangerfield liked to dabble in a little bit of every substance available at the cast parties"

hahahaha, anyway cant wait until next year!! :-)

This was my third PhillyClassic. Last year I bought the Bugs Bunny , but this year I really was not interested in spending 45.00 for Stunt Cycle. I can't really explain why, I just had no interest. I saw a few good deals. I missed a Suikoden 2 NEW for 45.00 DAMN!!! Its probably on ebay right now.

I did find from the same seller a Tactics Ogre for the PSX complete like new for 30.00

I made a trade with Joe for one of his Proto games. Genesis Indiana Jones Proto. It is a very large Proto too. If anyone is interested I can take a picture of it in action in my Nomad.

I also found a Suikoden 2 Guide for 3.00

I bought my 4 year old daughter Strawberry Shortcake for Atari 2600. She played it for for about 20 minutes. She likes it and wanted to play again last night.

Llike Joe I scored a Condor Attack for the Atari 2600, but I won't tell you guys how much I paid. It was pricey, but I wanted a true rare for my collection and always like the T Bar handle on the Condor Attack Cartridge.

My opinion was the show was organized and I give credit to all those involved in making it happen.

I felt some of the sellers had 'ebay prices' on everything. One seller wanted 80.00 for PSX Intelligent Cube x_x . Or 100.00 for an NES Toploader.

Joe mentioned Collectors House. I thought he had OK prices. I did not see any terrific deals. By the way , he wanted 400.00 for a Quadran Cart.

Maybe better deals were had on Friday. I was there on Saturday.

Anyway I look forward to next year!

Dustin

this shit better not happen at CGE or these "collection" events are dead..

Why pay $$ to get to a location for collectors just to pay Ebay prices? This could kill VG collection events. :(

Cafeman

Collector's House -- I've bought stuff off them in the last 2 Philly's. I'd rake together what I wanted, he'd quote me the price and both times I'd haggle with Mike. Both times he got this long-sufferering roll-eyes kind of face on and said "oooookayyyyy". ;) I don't know why I remember that. I'm ashamed to say that I bought 3 Jag titles in PC3 last year -- and I never played any of them yet! :(

I have never been comfortable haggling. I do it on ocassion, but I just get a pit in my stomach when I have to do it. Maybe that is why I own 2 saturns. No haggling with the dealer.

It could... but it won't. It's ALWAYS been this way, and dealers either learn to adjust or they lose their business to the guy at the table next to them!

I had a good time at the show, met Joe and John, and spotted ianoid and portnoyd, but never talked to them because everytime I saw either one, they were in some sort of intense negotiation! I did NOT get to meet POG or wberdan, they apparently disappeared when I arrived, oh well.

Joe was a little pale from the previous night's festivities, but his powers of observation weren't affected, I also spotted Cindy's fake boobs from a mile away. She'd had her face done too, it had a Florence Henderson look to it.

Adventure II was in the arcade cabinet the whole time I was there, from about 12 to 4 on saturday. Looked great.

Once I get my pics back, I'll add them to whatever pic topic is set up.

I'm sorry I didn't go to PC4, but it was too soon after my new job (less than 2 months into it... too much catching up to do financially). Hey, but I do plan on attending the big Funspot meeting in June (I might even convince my boyfriend to go).

I get a boner just thinking about it!

I sold far more raritites than I intended, and spent a little more than I'd have like. I would like to have clear out more stuff so I wouldn't have to mail it home. Special thanks to John Hardie for mailing out my 4 boxes- I hope.

The only thing I could do without was the nasty looks people gave when they didn't like my prices- despite being mostly reasonable or cheap (with exceptions that most of you know.)

I did enjoy the flea market feel of it. I don't think that $60 for a table with admission was really bad, though $30 for the weekend seems steep. I guess when you think of all the things you can play for at least a few hours, it's not that bad. It's like an all you can play classic arcade.

Although I didn't get to play games as much as I would have liked (always busy trading, buying, selling and chatting), I have to extend huge gratitude to all the people that brought arcade games to the show. I think that's a critical element that just falls together out of the generosity of the sellers and owners.

Always a pleasure seeing and hanging out with friends (like the DP guys, Willie and Jamie, the Canadians, Matt Reichert, Mize, Adam, SlyDC, Joe Grand and his ho and more) and meeting new ones (like Le Geek, dsullo, the Atari Age people, the eB guy named Chris and his wife, and the infinite supply of DP regulars that I met but can't connect faces with handles.) I only regret not talking with everybody more- that's the best thing about these shows. I love the deals, but chillin' with the gamer peeps is the highlight.

I'm happy I made the trip, though it cost me a sheepload, given that I flew out from Seattle. I could have broke even, if I hadn't spent something like $700 at the show. Thanks everybody!

See you at CGE.

Hi Cageman,
The difference was:
- All features that were originally kept for the special edition are now available to all -
1. PC4 will show when * is pressed while the game is ongoing.
2. A special message at the closing screen indicates that this copy was "made for phillyclassic 4".
3. Cheat mode is available to all (hit #*# and the level Number you want the game to start at).
4. The label is similar to the original with an additional PHILLYCLASSIC4 text - no S/N this time.
5. The box is newly designd and professionally made.

AdvantureII looks awesome! keep it up and please put my name down for a copy.

Ronen.

Hi Cageman,
....
Ronen.

Heh, I just had to laugh at being called "Cageman". Over at the Dreamcast Technical Pages somebody once mistyped "Caveman" and that name unfortunately stuck. I never saw "Cageman" as a typo before, heh. I notice you are not the Old Guru anymore? ;)

Anway, it's cool you brought some Castle Blasts (I saw a post about somebody snagging a copy over at The-nextlevel.com's forum). Glad you liked seeing Adv II too. Me & Raccoon are continuing to put our shoulders to the wheel on this game.

I'll chime in here too. I've been silent here since... well, since I signed up.

Adventure II looks great guys. Ron, you and Raccon Lad have out done yourselves and have pushed the envelope on 5200 homebrew games. I wasn't at PC4 but I've seen your work ;)
