View Full Version : Is the NWC price going to drop due to reproductions ?

I'm not sure how many of you follow NESDEV, but a great developer by the name of bunnyboy (with the help of rbudrick) is about to start selling NWC reproductions (along with other development carts and boards).
So what do people think of this? Will the NWC price finally drop? Or will it still continue to go up?
How long is it going to be before we see this carts inside real looking NWC gray carts being offered up on eBay?
In any case, I congratulate the duo for a job well done.

I'd say the genuine article will always command the money it has. Collectors will always want it.
I'd also figure that there would be a slight difference between the repro and an original, even if someone ends up making everything look the same somehow. Besides, the people who are spending that kind of money will want every tiny detail pointed out to them if there's a possibility of a 'fake'.
The people who are interested in the repro are most likely those of us(myself included) who'd love to have their own NWC but can't come up with the funds to get the real deal, so that wouldn't hurt the price since they aren't even in the bidding for one to begin with...and if they did bid a low amount like $700 and expected to get one, they're insane. :)
Just my thoughts.

As the creator of the repro and owner of a gold cart, I say this will not affect prices at all. NWC is a special case where the original physical cart is the value. It has already been dumped so it isn't like an unreleased proto. It is completely playable on some emulators. If prices do drop then my gold cart loses huge value, but I would be able to get a gray cart cheaper :) I expected some controversy so feel free to discuss but first check out the pictures at http://www.nintendoage.com/
This reproduction is clearly marked repro, the board is drastically different, and most importantly does not include any dip switches. Reproduction does not mean duplicate. Someone putting this board into a gray cart would still need to add fake (non functional) switches on a separate board. There are also some cart edge pins that are a different width, so a high quality external photo would be enough to tell if its real or fake.
Anyone could still try to make a real duplicate, but this certainly is NOT it.

Thoughts........
1. It'd be fun to play a repro but I wouldn't want to be the greenhorn who runs around a gaming convention bragging about owning one while in a room with 2-3 people who have the real cart.
2. EDIT: Written before seeing BunnyBoy's explanation right above mine.
3. I don't see why the value would go down. I don't think people who pay huge amounts of money for the real cart buy them solely to play them. Now if a reproduction was at a decent price, you'd probably have some people buying them mostly to play. I could be wrong, though.

Repros in this case would be cool, but only if the original program data is altered so that it shows "THIS IS A REPRODUCTION!" before the game even boots. That way, nobody will get scammed into buying a repro thinking it's the real deal. :)
And the original's price will never drop. EVER. If anything it'll grow with this.
Edit: Wait, no dips? That sucks. It would be nice if the dips were implemented via a trainer that shows up at the beginning. :p

I dont think the value will go down. People who are willing to pay like $2000 for the cart doesnt do it just so they can play it, its mostly for the collection value, and that will still remain in my opinion.

It won't hurt the value at all. 1st, the cart looks extremly different from a real NWC. 2nd it is a different board, it's doesn't have dips, and is set permenantly at the 6:21 time limit. 3rd-the repo looks awsome and thanks a bunch to bunnyboy for showing the skills to actually hardwire this cart. I love the custom molded cases and boards. Very high quality stuff. Here's hoping the Nes homebrew world gets like the atari homebrew world.

I dont see the price value thing because if your buying a repro then your not willing to spend the lets just say crap load of money that a real NWC cost and if you already own one youre not gonna sell it for cheaper
& when does this thing come out for sell?

I think the reason why they're using custom colored shells is to avoid confusion with the real cart.
Also, take a look at the label. It seems each one is numbered. But the number seems to appear in the lower left hand corner rather than the typical middle top.

As of right now i dont believe there has been a date for when the next batch will become available yet. But im sure it wont be too long, he just has to order some parts to make more.
Im actually the first customer to get one. I got it before he had finished the cart, so in the meantime i had to make my own cart for it. heres a thread to the buzz about eveything>>
http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=5&threadid=1111&enterthread=y
Now ill tell ya this thing is freakin sweet! Bunnyboy really knows what he is doing. It plays and works exactly like a REAL NWC, ive been playing it non stop. lots of fun and for a GREAT price.
As for an update They went for sale last night around 2:00 in the morning and were all sold by like 6:00 in the morning or something crazy like that. I had already gotten mine about a week ago, and its number 2. He's numbering them as well. From what i believe most of the people who got them were from nintendoage because thats where the first discussions started popping up. Now for those of you who love to play, collect, or even talk about the NES DEFINETLY check out www.nintendoage.com. It is a great site, especially if your into collecting NES.

I managed to be among the lucky ones that got them. I refreshed about every 8-10 seconds from about 1 AM up until they were officially listed (about 1:55 AM). As soon as they were listed, I placed my order for two. From what I understand, 20 were made with this first run...#1 I believe will likely be staying with bunnyboy, Parpunk has #2, rbudrick has/will be most likely getting #3, and eBay will be getting #4, according to what I read at NintendoAge. If such is the case, here's hoping that I get #5 and #6 :) .

This won't do anything to the NWC price. All it will do is bring more attention to the NWC's.
I wonder though how Nintendo will feel about this. I wouldn't doubt they may want to put a stop to this once they get word of it.

If nintendo were really against it, they probably would have shut down nesreproductions.com a long time ago. Granted, these are games that have been released in the US that they are still profiting off of in some form (virtual console, etc), but because they aren't the full games hopefully nothing will come of it.

To anyone who bought this cart, there is a revision to the manual that Bunnyboy didn'tget in on time. So, you may have the OMGRAREBBQ version of the manual. The updated one fixed a lot of stupid errors I made, but added a page that was missing at the end too. If you bought this, and only if you bought this, send me a PM, and I'll get you the .pdf of it. Just please promise me you won't share it with anyone else who hasn't bought the game, OK? I just want to make sure Bunnyboy is fully supported. If you do share it with someone else who HAS bought the game, make sure they take the same oath, lol.
But, just to be sure, If there is no Sealie Seal of Approval on the front and back and there is no page 14 entitled Compliance with NWC Regulations, then you have the earlier one.

What does the Dip-Switches do..like on the NWC Repo Cart the switches is down..for like 6 min
rbudrick
06-05-2007, 06:15 PM
There are no switches on the repro cart.
The switches adjust the time the game runs on. Official competition time was 6 min, 21 sec (switch 3 up, switches 1, 2, 4 down). The grey cart's label lists the settings on it and what time amount they add. Strangely enough, the times listed on the cart are off by a few seconds (it says 6:15 on the label instead of 6:21).

I'd like to have this as a conversation piece...Put it on display, then when asked about it give the story explanation of the NWC cart.
IMO this could actually make the price of the Original rise due to the exposure that this repro cart is bringing..

I think there maybe plans to release another batch, but it might be months from now. Bunnyboy does not accept pre-orders, pre-sales, or reserves. You just have to be lucky and catch one. For the past 11 days I have been periodically checking his website at least 30 times a day. I finally lucked out yesterday afternoon.

This thread was a waste of time, so its dug up every time a new batch is instantly sold out?
So my only chance to get one of these is to hang out at some guys website pressing refresh every 20 minutes hoping he sells more batches?
A little better heads up would be nice, or some kind of preorder list or something. At least that way he'd know how many people want em. I'd really like one.
So how many of you guys actually get one? Anyone want to sell theirs for > $45? I work and have better things to do then camp websites.

At least post what time you are going to put the next batch up for sale. Seems silly to keep it secret so EVERYONE is wasting time. When I asked, here is what I got;
"Its looking like sometime beginning of next week is when the next batch of ~25 NWC carts will be avail. There will never be any reservations, waiting lists, or preorders."
I checked back very often but was out of luck like most people.

It's just luck of the draw. I missed the first batch and thought I would not get one, but I camped the website and got my order in yesterday. If you really want one, you will do anything for it including refreshing a webpage in the middle of the night from a dead sleep. This is what I went through for the past 11 days to get one. All I know is there is a possible 3rd batch a few weeks from now, but that is only rumor, no exact release date. I just got lucky and refreshed the screen at the right time. Good Luck to all!

Obviously finding enough people to buy isn't a problem!
Having a preorder list saves a few seconds/minutes for some people, but screws everyone when either people don't pay or get angry when they did pay and have to wait so long because there is no set release date. This comes from recent business experience, not just a random decision. The release time also isn't a secret, it just happens to be whenever the carts have actually finished being produced. So far a posting has been made to at least nintendoage.com forums within minutes of the carts being available, so if you sign up for email notification there you don't even need to refresh the website. There are also website services that will notify you when another site changes, tho I don't know how fast they respond.
With all that said, 2-3 weeks until next batch will be ready! Need to get more parts and do a manual rev so its faster to produce...
