View Full Version : is it safe to buy XB360 now?

I've waited and waited for the bugs to be corrected and I'm considering once again buying a 360. Question is.... are most of the kinks worked out? I dont want to spend $400+ on a system that will only work for 13 months with my luck.

I don't need the large hard drive in the elite as I'm just a casual gamer. I'll buy the sports games and probably rent everything else. Anyway, is now a good time or is there more mods to come that I should wait for.

Thanks in advance!

Keep waiting - they're supposed to start using the 65nm chips by Christmas.

They did redesign the mobo on the Eliete's, and I really haven't heard about any problems with them, yet... But (of course) those are the most expensive models

They're safe alright, just try to ignore the malevolent tentacle that comes out every once in a while.

I agree with Diskoboy--hang on a little bit longer for a more reliable and quieter machine.

Oh, and with a re-design of the chip, that also may possibly mean a smaller power supply.

No more brick!

Oh - and you'd be surprised how much stuff piles up on the HD (demos, XBLA games, game saves, videos, music). You may think you wont need a big HD now, but trust me - you do want the bigger HD. Even if you're just a casual gamer.

Yup, I can testify to this. You want as big as possible unless you like constantly deleting and dl'ing files.

i'd get one. I mean, you get a one year warrantly if shit hits the fan, which is plenty time.

not ALL 360's die! Problem is, you ONLY hear about the ones that die, and never about the ones that are still kickin.

Just get one mate!

They're a great system. I got a Wii for xmas and i dont play it anymore cause there's nothing out for it except for Zelda/wii sports, all the stuff on the way is the same ole Nintendo stuff with these new gimped controls i reckon.

The 360 is where it's at. The xbox has a great community feel to it and it's got all the great games for the time being. Not to mention all the original multiplayer content (or at least updated) that is on XBLA, with the virtual your paying for ROMS with nothing new.

All these errors and break downs will just add to the 360 legacy!!! :D

I would wait the quality of the 360 hardware wise is crap

I would definitely wait to the hardware revision

I know mine's have constant issues now and I don't trust the 360 as far as quality goes, though on the flip side, it has a great selection of games.

I'm waiting myself. I'm thinking sometime next year. If they get the Tenticle Beast under control by then. ;) As a cynic, I fear it failing in the 13th month after the warranty becomes TP. :o

You've waited this long, wait and see if the new one with the cooler chip die actually ships sometime this fall. It's an awesome system for sure, best one I've ever owned, but it's not THAT far off. I'll be upgrading this fall myself :)

I'd suggest waiting too. Too me it seems stupid to spend that much on something that even *might* die in 13 or so months.

I'm of the mind that if you're seending upwards of $400 on something, it should work for at least a decent amount of time.

Of course according to the schematics I checked yours is scheduled to go kaput june 27-29 between the hours of 3-11. A coffin is awaiting:) No but seriously. Knowing what I painfully know I would wait until I got the revised edition confirmed with mfg dates and all.

It is easy to convince oneself but there are issue need to be address. My xbox was about as gently handled as one could be and it still went kaput. If you must have one now pony up for the 2 year ms extension. Believe the issues.

I haven't had any failures yet. I've had my 360 for roughly 10 months, And It gets a LOT of use. I even left it on for two days (On two seperate occasions!)

I can't believe that people still have "Failures" with their systems. They must be doing something wrong if that is happening.

That's one - compared to the million (plus) or so of the white models. When I hear steady complaints, like the core and premium models, then I'd worry.

I was talking to one of the distributors delivering product to the store I work at this morning, and he mentioned that he had another Xbox 360 give him the 'red ring of death'. This was his fourth breakdown. I should have asked him where he keeps it, like in a place where air can't circulate to cool it off, but he had to make his next delivery. Man, that guy has bad luck with 360s. Hearing things like this make me nervous every time I turn mine on, just waiting to see red....

dude go for it, your really missing out on great games and the faliure rate isnt as bad as everyone makes out me and my mates's are still going strong, also remember you still get 1 year of warrenty so even when the new chips come out yours could "suddenly" become "faulty" and get it swapped for a new one with a new chip.

it won't just turn red, first it'll freeze and make a loud static sound (could even scare the shit outta you it comes on so sudden). Then it pretends like its going to work correctly for maybe an hour, then does the same thing all over again to the point where you can't even start your system. Thats when the red rings comes on.

Errmm... my Wii doesn't make really *any* noise except when it's accessing the drive.. even then, it's considerably quieter than the "clunkity clunkinty chunk chunk click" of my 360 (really.. my 360 sounds exactly like that). I haven't heard of maybe 1 or 2 people having issues with the Wii cept for maybe launching the Wiimote through a TV or losing a hand in a ceiling fan.

First, the power brick: It's not just a power converter, it also supplies power for a little while after the power goes out so that you can safely shut down your 360. That's why it's big, and that's why I don't imagine it getting smaller. That being said...

Hardware revisions: There are 65 nm revisions forthcoming for the GPU AND the CPU. This will definitely call for a mobo redesign, and the system should run more quiet and cooler. It should also drive the cost down. The 360's will become cheaper to produce, and this holiday season is a prime time to lower the price to combat the wii onslaught and keep the ps3 at bay. Also, I hope that BenQ models become more prevalent as these drives have been noted to be better in terms of noise production that the previous drives of the 360.

So, my answer is wait until about Thanksgiving 2007. You're likely to see price breaks and more reliable designs, and there will be a wealth of new games to entice you at that point (mass effect, bioshock, halo 3 are all forthcoming).

I wouldn't wait, as people are saying you are missing out on some good stuff. I personally am on Xbox #5, which I just bought maybe a month or so ago and I'm having the occasional disc read errors (and no the discs are not dirty or scratched).

What I recommend doing though, buy your 360 from Best Buy and get the max warranty on it. That way when (if) you have problems with it, bring it back for a brand new one.

Don't play M$ game of sending it back and having them fix it. I went through 4 different ones (at the time they didnt send you back yours), and all 4 seemed to die either close to warranty or after.

The 5th I just bought a brand new one, just missed the black one :(

Posts like this make me wonder how many of the 10 million sold are actually re-buys. I wondered the same thing about the PS2.

Wouldn't buy one right now. I'm still hearing about them breaking down. Even Elites are having issues.

As someone else said, wait until Christmas when they revise their hardware again. If it's not fixed by then, I'm expecting a full force boycott of MS because of these issues.

Dont gamble with a $400 purchase. The hardware faults with the 360 are worse than what should be acceptable. Wait for a hardware revision. I have about 7 friends who are on at least their second 360. I am the only lucky bastard who has not gotten the ring of death. I have three friends who have had multiple returns. The fact that the elite is not a hardware revision is an insult to injury.

It occasionally moaned a bit after it hit it's deathbed, but I'll admit it's pretty quiet now that it's in its coffin on its way to M$.
