OK, I'm completely new to this emulation thing, and in the last 4 hours, I've managed to get the Atari 2600 and the SEGA Master System emulators working. Yet, for the life of me I cannot figure out the science behind getting this arcade one to do anything. The only games I really want are the Arcade versions of Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. Both have Vector Graphics.

I have gone as far as downloading the MAME32 emulator, and unziped it. I have also downloaded the Star Wars game from the Emulation forum here. I did as I was instructed and put it into the ROMS folder of the unzipped MAME directory.

When I open up the emulator, and there's a list of thousands and thousands of games that I never downloaded! NONE of them work! Each time I click on any game, I get an error message giving me a whole list of files that it says cannot be found. WTF?? Then, there's no way for me to load the Star Wars game that I downloaded into the ROM folder.

What did I do wrong here?? I only want 2 games. This shouldn't be that difficult if I've followed all the steps........

HELP!!

Well of course they wont work and are "not found". You said you only have the rom for Star Wars... no rocket science there :p

In Mame32.. look on the left. Right now you probably have it set on "All Games".. which will of course list every available game whether you have it or not. If you only want to see the roms you have in your ROMS folder, click on "Available". That should show you what games you actually have. When you see the list, highlight the game and press ALT-A. This will audit the roms and let you know if the ones you have for Star Wars are any good.

Incidentally you don't want to unzip the roms by the way. Keep it as ROMS\STARWARS.ZIP , etc.

Try going as far as reading the docs and/or a MAME FAQ. Everything you need to know has been covered many times before.

I use macmame, and check the "mini audit" feature. Dont know where it is on mame 32. But that tells me upfront before launching. Dont forget certain makers have special bios that need to be dropped in. Neo Geo has one for example.
