yeah this is good news. The only sucky thing about it is that the Japanese version of this had online play. But they were also 40 bucks and I am sure that this will only be 20 here.

No chance of the US version having online play?

I'm really excited about these collections coming out, there's 8 or so in Japan so far...

Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 1 & 2
King of Fighters Orochi Version
Art of Fighting
Fatal Fury Vol 1
Fatal Fury Vol 2
King of Fighters Nest Version
Fu'un Super Combo (Kizuna Encounter and Savage Reign)

The only game in there that interests me is Fatal Fury Special, and I already own the arcade machine.8-)

I know this post is rather pointless, but I've always wanted to say "I already own the arcade machine" in a discussion like this. :p

I read this yesterday and am looking forward to it. SNK is really pumping out some excellent retro compilations. Apparently there is a Volume 2 in Japan as well.

Who would've thought the PS2 would end up being the console with the definitive library of retro 2-D games? Neo-what? (j/k)

They already released the Art of Fighting Collection earlier this month for $15 MSRP. Glad to know more 2-D fighting goodness is in the pipeline.\\^_^/

Best part is the two other minor details:

If you look at the In Development section of the US website, the FF Battle Archive maintains the "Volume 1" in its logo, implying that volume 2 will also make it here!

More importantly, KING OF FIGHTERS XI is making it to the US also. This is fantastic.

Finally, NEO GEO BATTLE COLISEUM is making to the US.

That's FOUR products featuring Geese Howard in ONE year. SNK is back.

Supposedly their "Greatest Hits" equivalent re-release of NGBC has fixed load times, here's hoping we get that. :D

King of Fighters XI has shorter load times on the PS2 than it does in the arcades, so I don't see why it's not possible.

You know i am just happy someone(SNK) is still supporting 2d fighters on the ps2. Capcom is doing a shit job of it and Sammy is still pretty fresh but lets hope the US get atleast Fists of Northstar from Sammy and maybe a Darkstalkers/Night Warriors collection from Capcom.

I've always wondered why this was never released in the US. I have the PSP and Japanese DC versions. I wonder how many times and how close this was to getting approved for the US?

But the Japanese Darkstalkers collection on the Dreamcast wasn't really a collection, it was one game with all characters in all their incarnations. It didn't even have the original endings or levels for each game. It played great, but it was shit in that regard.

I bought KOF "2006" yesterday, and I had no clue AOF Collection was $15! I'll be getting it as soon as I get some money, woohoo! And yes, I plan to get Fatal Fury Archives Volume 1 soon. :D

You bought FF1? That's the worst port ever! What kind of SNES game has LOAD TIMES! D:

I'd keep them, so I could torture any annoying people into leaving though. :P

Neo Rasa

Haha amen to that. I used to say I'd never become an elitist, but when you've played the Neo Geo cartridges ANY load time is too damn long. :D

That said, there's a few things worth nothing:

Fatal Fury: King of Fighters ~ This and the Genesis port let player two control any character instead of just Terry Bogard/Andy Bogard/Joe Higashi by tapping down on controller two at the character select screen. The storyline is slightly more developed as well if you're into that kind of thing.

Fatal Fury 2 ~ SNES Fatal Fury 2 should be kept just to show off what the SNES can do. It's unbelievable how much is kept in this port. The quality is lower but every sound sample/etc. is there.

Fatal Fury Special ~ This port really isn't worth your time. Neo Geo and Turbo CD are the only acceptable choices.

SNES games with load times. :( As if the games weren't already slow enough.

Kitsune, when you go out for Art of Fighting Anthology, Game Crazy seems to be selling it for $19.99 so stay away. The Toys 'R Us here has a huge box of them for $14.99 though.

I wish SNK would set up direct ordering from Wall, NJ. First off I could just drive the half hour and pick up the game from them ;) , second off, why even bother with Gamestop when they treat the product like shit?

There's no Game Crazy in Calexico. It hurts, but I deal. But, there's a Toys'R'Us right behind the Wal-Mart. I'll probably go next week, but their PS2 game selection sucks awfully... and they're overpriced. (Kingdom Hearts II Greatest Hits for $40? What?!)

I actually heard that Fatal Fury Special on the SNES wasn't that bad; a magazine I used to own said the US version got tweaked a lot and had a bunch of bugfixes. Eh, who knows. :p

Edited to add: The SNES port of Art of Fighting also had a ton of story added. And by that I mean that they ADDED AN ENDING TO ART OF FIGHTING instead of leaving us with a To Be Continued. :p There's also a bit of story with (GASP) Geese Howard!

The SNES version has this feature too, but it doesn't really matter since the game is crap.

I was also surprised the SNES AoF had an actual ending as I got it recently and beat it (yet another one I'll have to sell and get the Anthology). I remember playing a version of it and it ended with a question mark.

I know about he SNES version having it, the entire point of that post was the SNES ports of FF1/2/Special. ;)

Art of Fighting's official ending is that question mark. The SNES/Genesis version have an epilogue regarding Mr. Karate's true identity and the reason he ended up in his current situation.

It mainly had to do with the hit detection and damage levels. Several of the changes are pretty subtle at first. As an example, some multi-hit moves in the SFC version only hit once but do more damage, in the SNES release their damage is reduced and they retain their easier to execute multi-hit damage like in the original.

Also I don't know this for sure, but supposedly there were a few sound glitches where no voice overs would play for some moves at times, something like that.

Isn't it $20 at Gamestop, like Art of Fighting Anthology? That's just the way GS rolls.

Checked TRU and Best Buy today, neither had it yet. I'll go check again this weekend and hopefully turn up more love.

I bought AOF Anthology for $15 at a local Gamestop (no other place had the damn game!) Both the manager an I were surprised at the price: I told him I'd read that the game was being sold for $20 at other stores, and he said the price had always been $15 at his place, so YMMV.

GS/EB in WI seems to be a bad place to reserve SNK shit. I tried to reserve FFBA but They wouldn't let me it seems. The Website is run differently than the store, so even though you see it as reservable on the site, you might not be able to reserve it in store. Plus, yeah, If you can't reserve it, you DEFINITELY won't get it at your local store. So it's a big fuckarow.

I was forced to order it from an ebay store. Just like with AOFA.

It's really pissing me off I can't reserve that shit. I'm just gonna buy and reserve SNK stuff online now. Not because I want to, but Because I feel forced to...

I ran out and grabbed a copy at drexel's store. i am pleased. It is set up like the AOF anthology when it comes to the main menu. In each game you can pick any difficulty including mvs which is a plus. Don't pay more than $20 if you can manage it. It's supposed to be $15.

That's GameStops policy. They don't take store pre-orders on budget titles, which is any game with an MSRP of $19.99 or under. Every EB/GS in the United States follows this policy unfortunately...

I found the game today at one of the two local Gamestops. The catch? It cost me $20. :( But no other store stocked it, and it looks like they only got TWO COPIES!

Anyway, I played it and the arrange music for Fatal Fury sounds weird. I'd never heard the arranged score before, and it flat out sucks. The original music has more ... attitude. Of course, this was one of SNK Shin Sekai Gakkyoku Zatsugidan's first arrange scores, so it's to be expected.

Fatal Fury 1 plays great, and I had no problem beating it on my first try, unlike these losers (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/813/813394p1.html). :p I tried out Special next and Terry wiped the floor with me. Nothing new there.

But Fatal Fury 3... this was a pleasant surprise. The game is much, MUCH better than I remembered, especially now that certain button combinations are mapped to the L/R buttons. Of course, for some reason the super special moves don't work at all. Terry just stopped in the middle of performing the Power Geyser... but that's why I hated FF3. The specials wouldn't come out at all. Maybe I'm just not getting it.

Oh, and the manual has most if not all specials for every character. And it tells you how to use the Chonrei twins and Yamazaki in game - it gives you the codes to play as them right there in the same page!

So uh, I give this an 8 for the lack of extras and the crappy Fatal Fury music. La.

Neo Rasa
08-23-2007, 11:17 PM
I give it an 11 for the FF3 arranged music. :D

If Terry's Power Geyser isn't working then you're doing the move with the wrong button or doing the reverse motion. In FF3 each character has a fake version of their super move (and some have fakeouts of some of their special moves, RBFF is insane with this) so that you can trick an opponent into backing off or attacking you a certain way. It makes for awesome mind games. :D

Fatal Fury 3 has slightly tighter controls than any other FF game, it also has some quirks to its throws and other moves that don't exist in any other FF game, it's worth putting some time into though. I think it's one of the most underrated fighters out there.

I was doing the correct motion, using the two buttons assigned to one of the R buttons. It just never came out on the PS2 or on the Neo for me.

Also... I just spent twenty goddamn minutes trying to beat motherfucking AXEL HAWK in Fatal Fury 2. Once again, AXEL HAWK. I've beaten every single Neo boss in existance at least once, and I can't beat AXEL FUCKING HAWK. He keeps chipping away at me, or using his insane punching priority to stop every attack I throw... and he even used his super special move WHEN HE HAD 80% LIFE LEFT.

I got so pissed off I turned off the PS2. Jesus Christ, this is SNK Boss Syndrome at its worst! Not even fucking IGNIZ gave me this much trouble!

Edit:
Oh, by the way, I own the FF3 Arrange Soundtrack. :p The real thing, heh.

Like Overbite, though, what I really want is a Samurai Shodown anthology with online play. That would make me so very, very happy. Also a shooter compilation - Viewpoint, Pulstar, Last Resort, Ghost Pilots, maybe even Blazing Star! It won't happen, but it's nice to think about.

Awesome, you can join the club of people who own arranged FF soundtracks. We have two members now counting you and me. :D

Axel Hawk, him and Michael Max never even got a cameo outside of their games. I use Andy against him, the computer will usually have issues dealing with Andy's Ku Ha Dan (down/back, up/forward + kick). Also try raising the difficulty level, it makes the bosses so stupidly aggressive that it's actually easier to beat them (though this seems to be most effective on the Neo itself and emulated ports like the Battle Archives).

20 bucks at the Gamestop I bought it at, but this game is made of EPIC WIN. Or was it still EB? I forget.

FF3 is still kicking my ass. FF2 and Special still rule. I haven't even checked out the shitfest that is FF1 yet, but the other three games more than make up for it. This set is making me want more than ever to finally build that arcade joystick I was going to make a few years ago but got so lazy I decided not to. I kick ass at FFSpecial on the SNES with that Capcom joystick, so I'm really out of my element with the PS2 pad.

The arranged soundtracks are excellent. I love how you can still go back to the MVS/AES soundtracks, too. I don't get why the initial mapping of buttons was upside down, though. They mapped the buttons with the punches on the bottom and right buttons and the kicks on the other two. (I forget the shapes on the buttons.) Back on the Dreamcast, the buttons were mapped with the punches on X and Y and the kicks on A and B. I didn't know what was going on when I first played the game. Then I reconfigured and started having fun.

This is how the controls are layed out for any SNK fighting game in Japan. Typically for a US they're reversed but for lower budget translations they won't bother.

Actually you're right, for the KoFs they assume you're using the ASCII stick (I remember they even use it as the controller diagram in the manuals), I'm thinking of Last Blade 2 in particular as far as the "reversed" controls go.

They take this into account even on newer hardware though, it's notable that the Hori 360 Virtual Fighter 5 stick has the B and A buttons on the top row.

Well I finally picked up a copy today and loaded up FF3. Man, I love that intro!

Sort of on topic, NeoGeo Battle Colosseum and King of Fighters XI popped up in the Gamestop POS. They're not reservable because they're $19.99, but their presence would imply a strong chance of both titles coming in within about three months or so (this is how it went for FF and AoF Anthology).

Not reservable... jesus tapdancing christ, Gamestop is stupid. But that's another thread.

Both titles have been mentioned at SNK-P's site as "Coming Soon!" (http://www.snkplaymoreusa.com/in-development.php) for a while now. Fatal Fury Battle Archives was listed there before the release... so they're probably going to release the games too.

Their being released has never been in question, I just didn't think both would make it out this year, I'm overjoyed that this will probably be the case. :D

I'll never understand the logic behind not being able to reserve games that might actually be hard to get. I get my SNK games at Digital Press. :D

For the life of me I can't find this one anywhere other than EB/GS for $19.99, and I really, REALLY only want to pay the $14.99 Toys R Us charged for AoF Anthology. It's a principles thing :)

Even Gamecrazy quoted me at $14.99 new/9.99 used, yet none of them had it in stock and could only do a special order for an additional $6 more. STUPID.

Amazon has it for $14.99 (w/free shipping).

Sadly I can't find a brick & mortar store that still has this game for sale *brand new* Though a Gamestop Employee did try to sell me a gutted new one as new, but the game had more finger prints and scratches on it than some of their $2.99 PS2 Used Bin games? I'm sure I can find it on the Internet, but I'd like to just walk into a store and buy it.

After searching 6 local Gamestop/EB stores, I finally found one with a sealed copy, but I will probably open it later today, which sort of defeats the purpose of going through all this trouble.

For those still looking for this, you might want to try a peek at your local K-Mart. I went there today scoping the clearance sales and what did I find but three copies of Fatal Fury for $9.99 each. They were located with the regular bargain bin dreck and had a "Super Savings" price tag on them. Needless to say I grabbed myself one. They also had the Art of Fighting Anthology as well for the more standard $14.99 price. I was pretty happy at least :)

I was surprised to see this game on the shelf when I walked into GameStop on Saturday. Until then, I'd never even heard this compilation was in the works. I'd been wanting to play some Fatal Fury and it sounds like this baby is worth the small amount of dough it costs.
