Hiya

I am currently running mame32 for my arcade fix, and I like the feature where you can create custom folders for your favorite games. I was wondering if anyone has made their own custom folder with their favorite games and are willing to share it. As you know, mame has thousands of games and I am looking for an easy way to find some good games without sorting through alot of the crap :)

Thanks
Sam

At one point in time I actually would serch the nets looking for arcade roms to play in MAME32 a lot.

I would pick a category/genera (like fighter.cap for example) and look for and DL roms for every game listed there. Then what I would do is figure which ones did and did not work. If they didnt work, I would delete the rom to free HDD space.

From all the games left the DID work I would make a custom 'favorites' folder that listed ONLY the games that I had good working roms for, reducing the clutter and junk that I would have to see of games I didnt have or games that didnt work.

Of course I also made some folders for my personal faves, like I got one that has JUST the original Puzzle Bobble so I can find one of my fave arcade puzzle games really quickly.

Creating your own custom folders is quite easy, it can just take a bit of time sometimes and be repetitive and boring. Again, with what I do for each category/genera, you can just COPY that list from another file used in mame32 (cant remember the name right now and dont have mame32 on this comp, should be easy to find though) that is the list of all games sorted by genera, then you find the genera you just worked on and copy the list into your faves list and just remove entries for game you dont have working roms for.

Are you asking for a list of "good" MAME games (games that work well in MAME and are fun to play)?

The difficult part of making such a list is that a lot depends on your version of MAME, your computer, and especially your control panel.

I had a set up a few years ago that worked great for Spy Hunter...now with my current control set up it's pretty much unplayable. Currently I have a control panel with two joysticks which works great for Robotron...that's not an option for everyone.

I'm only using an 8 button joypad on a 1.6 Ghz Pentium M hooked up to my TV.

I too would love to see some other people's custom folders for MAME32. I always wanted to go through all the ROMs I have and separate out the best ones by genre, but man, that's a lot of ROMs. I'd need a couple weeks off work or something.

It seems like maybe not very many people use the custom folders feature or something.

As for recommendations, I'll just make one: Great 1000 Mile Rally (a.k.a Mille Miglia) and its sequel. Probably the best overhead racers ever, in my opinion, and they never got ported to any home system--probably because they were too advanced for the 16-bit systems, but maybe considered too old fashioned for the 32-bitters, which is really too bad, but that's the kind of stuff MAME is made for.

Here are the ones I currently am playing on my laptop (similar specs with a 4 button joypad):

Berzerk
POW
Kung Fu Master
Gigawing
Mario Brothers
R-Type

These are by no means the best games EVAR but they work well with this configuration, and are what I happen to be in the mood for at this time.

As that post above me shows, the favorites list can get huge, though may not be your choices. Just play the games, when you find one you like add it to the Favorites Folder. The list does not have to be completed immediate and can be changed as your tastes change. To narrow down the choices, search games by genre, controller style, vector or raster, year, etc.

Oh and if you like a hidden gem of puzzler games, check out Logic Pro 1 and Logic Pro 2. Also for the game that started all the Zuma games check out Puzz Loop. I love Robotron and Flight Sim games, sometimes enjoy a marble blast game too.

Run Puzz Loop in Mame and find something interesting in the game's Service Menu. Aha, a hidden Spinner control!

Yeah my favorite folder is huge, its more like a 'fun games that work properly' folder. Most games work perfectly but some lack sound, which is annoying.
Part of the fun of MAME is sorting through all the games, playing around with titles youve never seen or played then saving it in the favorties folder for later.
Whenever I fire up MAME I almost always end up playing Gunbird or Darius Gaiden Silve Hawk.
A few months back I downloaded this DS3 tool/drive which lets you use PS3 controller on PC, and it works great for MAME. I used to have 2 'Play Sega' Saturn style PC usb controllers, but they both broke in the same way. The D-pad broke internally. One broke after 5 months of use, the other broke after 2 weeks of use. They worked just fine but construction wise they were total garbage.
