View Full Version : CD Repair/also, why do backups not work?

First, CD-Repair:

I never owned a Sega CD when it was new, so every game I own was second-hand--mostly from pawn shops, and in varying conditions. One game I have (Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective) was all-but-unplayable the day I got it. I attribute this to a large amount of blemishes on the disc.

Now, is there any way to have this game repaired? I would rather not have to buy a replacement copy which for all I know might be in just as bad a shape.

Second, backups:

Owing to the above experience I've been kinda paranoid about wanting to protect my CD-based games (meaning PC-Engine and Sega CD). So yes, I've tried to make backups. I've read like three how-to guides on the internet (Racketboy's, the guide at fantasyanime, and one on a Sega fanpage that escapes me at the moment) as well as having asked at Eidolon's Inn, and yes I know about tools like Sega Cue Maker and Turborip and I've used them and practically every darn ripping-burning program recommended to me (including that Alcohol %120 thing and CDRWin), but the results have been the same.

To make a long story short, two of the backups I tested ended up being one-level "demos"--I'd beat the first level, then they'd just get stuck trying to find the next data track or something. The other worked but had trouble finding the music tracks and got stuck if I waited for an opening cutscene to load (note that I'm trying to play these backups on the actual system--they're absolutely worthless to me if I have to use an emulator). So like, I'm absolutely stuck for any idea as to what I might be doing wrong.

Any suggestions?

two things it coudl be, you might be using very cheap media which would explain the crashing, also you need to burn them at 1x or 2x to get the best quality burns

making back ups of sega cd games are easy,if you actually own the orginal disc.just make an exact copy of the sega cd disc with your normal cd burning software that you have on your pc.i have done this with over 40 sega cd games, and they always play on my sega cd system great.

I've burned at low speeds before (the lowest my drive can go is 4x though), direct copying from a disc.

Maybe media is a problem. What brands are recommended?

But doesn't ripping the audio tracks to MP3 degrade their quality and cause other issues besides? Why not just rip 'em to WAV?
