With reports of hackers foiling versions 1.10 and 1.11 of the PlayStation 3's firmware (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps3firmware) arising, Sony is already making it clear (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=25750) as to how it'll respond to acts of and relating to piracy. SCEA spokesperson Dave Karakker tells GamesIndustry.Biz, "The best we can do as a company is to make our security that much stronger and aggressively pursue legal action against anyone caught trying to use an exploit in an illegal manner." Hackers have thus far managed to get illegal copies of games to boot on the PS3, but not play. Homebrew games have also not made it to a playable state, but as with every console before, it's only a matter of time (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/27/psp-hackers-dark-alex-and-fanjita-unmasked/) before they do.

Sony may choose to ban infringing systems from the PlayStation Network (http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn) -- like Microsoft has done (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/17/microsoft-booting-modders-off-xbox-live/) with Xbox Live -- though Karakker adds that the chance of bricking (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/24/lego-star-wars-the-complete-saga-bricking-360-ps3-wii-ds/) your console should also be seen as a deterrent. "Naturally, any use of an exploit on the system software does void the warranty on the PS3 system... Which could be a costly mistake to see if you can run an old SEGA CD game on it." Especially if it's Road Avenger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj7tglqNM1I).

Sony needs to embrace the home-brewers. Hell maybe give them a place to upload their games to the ps3 network for others to play. I think that would be a really cool thing to have on the ps3 and they might sell a few systems in the process.

WRONG.

Sony should announce that the PS3 is the Titanic and that no hacker can sink it. THAT would sell the console to hackers. Pissed of hackers on a mission would go thru 2-3 motherboards each in the process to beat a smug Sony.

Then again Sony makes no money from hareware sales. Which is why selling consoles large or small to hackers just isn't positive.

WOW just WOW

is SONY really that worried if like 3 gamers out there have ANY interest in playing old Sega CD games on their PS3s?:shameful:

Dont get me wrong I liked the Sega CD well at least the Lunar and Snatcher games were kick ass but FUCK Sony isnt that a tad EXTREME?

Obviously Sony doesn't give a fuck if people figure out a way to play Sega CD games on a PS3 (thus creating the world's most expensive Sega CD). What they don't want is people playing pirated PS3 games. As has been stated, Sony loses money by selling PS3's, but makes the money back through game sales.

The cat and mouse game of modding consoles has definitely changed since the advent of online gaming and firmware updates. There is always the threat that gaming companies will detect your mod and ban you from online playing, and/or make your console not work.

I'm not really sure this is a big deal so far.

If someone can pony up $600+ for a PS3, I'm guessing they're not going to have too much trouble coming up with $60 for real games. I understand that half the thrill with pirated games is just the ability to get them to work...but bricking your PS3 in the process? Not worth it.

well as for embracing the homebrewers, whatever happened to net yaroze? if Sony had a similar development kit for the PS3, that would solve that problem

for $600 you could buy a genesis sega cd 32x combo, the lunar games, snatcher, and whatever else you want to play on sega CD for the most part. I think copying PS3 games is all they are worried about. With all the attention on homebrew now-a-days, you know one of the companies will eventually cash in on the whole homebrew scene, the games may not be free, but I'm sure they'll be somewhat cheap and legaly available.
