View Full Version : Is Ikaruga too easy?

To score points in, that is?

I witnessed something I never thought I would see a short while back.

One night shortly before she turned one (June 1st), my youngest daughter Natalie got ahold of my Dreamcast controller. I had Ikaruga in at the time. So, just for a laugh, I pressed start for her.

Somehow, she managed to score a little over 30,000 points before losing her last ship and having to continue, without any help from me and without even looking at the screen half the time.

This leads me to ask, is Ikaruga too easy or do I just have a gifted child, or what? To put it into perspective, my oldest daughter (age 4) tried it out and didn't even break 10,000 points before she lost her last ship. And she made it further than the baby.

Believe me, I would... if I had a copy. Damn, but I need to get that back.

There's definitely a trend in shooters to have ridiculously high scores. Personally, I aboslutely love that trend, though, so I wouldn't say it's too easy to score. It's so gratifying to glance up at your score in the middle of a game and see it rolling up like the Earth's population. It's all relative, though, since 30,000 is minor compared to what you ought to be able to get in the first couple waves of Ikaruga.

...word is bondage...

I always thought Ikaruga was really hard, but maybe that's just because the polarity thing makes my brain hurt. I'd rather have some mindless Donpachi action.

That doesn't sound like a very high score. A good one for someone so young, but a perfect run of stage 1 is in the millions.

Pop in one of the GigaWing games. She'll be screaming through 30,000,000 in no time.

But remember, half the time she wasn't even looking at the screen! LOL

Can't argue with that. I should get those back too.

I attribute this phenomenon to "the luck o' the button masher," much like how newbs sometimes accidentally whip seasoned fighting game players' behinds.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 30,000 ain't too hot (http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=144&highlight=ikaruga).

These games are meant to be played through on a credit. When you can clear it, then you can debate whether it's too easy or not. Anything before that isn't much of a debate.
