I was thinking about picking up the Famicom version of Gimmick! and was just curious if it would work.. because I had heard a couple of times that certain added sound hardware doesn't work on the US NES and I believe Gimmick! has a custom sound chip (the music has a lot more to it than the European release).

The cart will work if you pull pin four of the lockout chip in your NES. It does indeed have custom sound, but I am remembering quite fuzzily if there were any sound differences between Euro and Japanese. I think it works fine, since I'm pretty sure the Euro one had the chip too.
Gimmick is one of the best NES games EVER, period.

The game will work, but you won't hear the extra sound channels.
One suggested solution to this was to modify your 60-72-pin adaptor so that the sound output from the FC cart goes to an unused pin also present on the expansion port, and then connect this pin to the audio in pin on the expansion port, rerouting the sound.
But that's the extent of my knowledge on the whole sound rerouting thing.
