Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation First Look
We get a first look at the amazing-looking debut of the Ace Combat
series on the Xbox 360.

By Brian Ekberg, GameSpot
Posted Jun 13, 2007 4:04 pm PT

Before we begin a proper preview of Ace Combat 6 for the Xbox 360, let's get this out of the way early: This game looks amazing. With wonderfully detailed jets, gorgeous explosion and flight effects, as well as some of the most realistic-looking cityscapes we've ever seen in a flight game, there's little doubt that Namco's next entry in its long-running jet-fighting series is giving the Xbox 360 hardware a serious workout.

Ace Combat 6 is all about piloting some of the most technologically advanced fighter jets in the world to defend your fictional home city of Gracemeria. The story begins when an unidentified enemy attacks the city, first taking out Kings Bridge in a surprise strike that requires the home forces to quickly scramble their jets into the air. From
there, it's up to you to pilot your jet in Gracemerian airspace, blasting down droves of bad guys in the process and in true Ace Combat style.

However, there are several things that set Ace Combat 6 apart from its predecessors. The first is a graphical style that, if not photorealistic, is perhaps the next best thing. The jets, complete with plumes of superheated fuel exhaust trailing out the back, are all expertly modeled. They are also, naturally, based on their real-life counterparts. The game will include approximately 20 licensed jets, including the F-15 E Strike Eagle, the F-22 Raptor, and the A-10 Warthog, all with realistically modeled cockpits should you prefer the first-person flight action. However, as good as those sleek fighters look, they pale in comparison to the impressive scale of the
environments themselves. As you begin the mission over the heart of Gracemeria, you're struck first by the immense size of the area; sweeping down closer to the buildings near downtown, it isn't long before you get a look at all those high-rises in the middle of the city or the smaller buildings that surround them.

It's all a bit like the "3D view" in Google Maps, only rendered with much more detail and with a draw distance that is truly impressive. Of course, it's likely that if you were to get close enough to an individual building, you'd see that it wasn't modeled with much detail; at the speeds you'll typically be flying at in Ace Combat 6, you'll hardly notice. Couple that with cool cloud effects (that actually make it look like you're flying into a cloud rather than a
clump of white pixels) and dramatic explosion effects, and you've got a game that's looking sharp indeed.

Ace Combat 6 will also set itself apart with its controls. While you'll still be able to fly the planes with the regular Xbox 360 controller, the hardcore Ace Combat fans might want to try out the new Ace Edge stick and throttle controller that will be available as a bundle when the game is released later this year. We saw a prototype
in action during our demo with the game; it comes in two separate pieces--the stick and the throttle--along with a number of buttons on both pieces that looked to add a lot of complexity (or fun, if you swing that way) to the flight in Ace Combat 6. Luckily, the flight in the AC series has always been approachable, so even if you don't want
to drop the cash for the Ace Edge, you'll still be able to kick some aerial butt.

Though the early missions in the game will likely be a cakewalk for Ace Combat vets, you'll want to get used to one of the new mechanics in the game: allied support. Here, you can order allied forces-- ground, aerial, or naval in nature--to assist you in your enemy assaults. You can also choose whether to have them attack specific
areas on the battlefield or simply provide cover assault by attacking any enemy that targets your plane. However, you won't have immediate access to allied support. You'll first need to fill up a meter in the lower left-hand corner of the screen by shooting down enemies. Once it's available, you must select the allied units you wish to help you by pointing the nose of your plane in that units' direction, then press either up or down on the d-pad. Up will choose "attack" enemy units, down will choose "cover". Producers told us that the support feature will be crucial to your success as you progress through the game and that units you help during one mission will be available to
you later. Certainly, that kind of firepower will be helpful to you when taking on the big boss planes that will surely find their way into Ace Combat 6.

The single-player game in Ace Combat 6 will boast improved artificial intelligence because enemy planes will work more skillfully both as individuals and in formation. Beyond that, the game will have multiplayer dog fighting via Xbox Live. While Namco hasn't yet announced final details on the online portion of the game, we do know
that several multiplayer match types will make their way into the game. These matches include deathmatch, team deathmatch, and cooperative play, where you and friends will take on computer-controlled enemies.

Judging from its visuals alone, Ace Combat 6 has to be one of the Xbox 360 games to watch for the rest of the year. If it can offer a gameplay experience that lives up to its amazing look, then we're all in for something special when the game ships worldwide later this year. We'll be bringing you much more on the game in the coming months.

Ace Combat 6 sticking 360s
$150 limited-edition bundle from Namco and Hori to include game, flight stick, and faceplate.

By Tom Magrino, GameSpot

In what is becoming a semiregular occurrence, Namco Bandai announced today it would again be partnering with gaming peripheral-maker Hori to offer a limited-edition bundle for its upcoming flight-combat shooter Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. This marks the third collaboration of the two companies on a limited-edition bundle, with the first being a Flightstick 2 bundle for Ace Combat 5 in 2004 and the second being an arcade-style controller bundle for Tekken 5 in 2005.

Now arriving, the Ace-Edge.
In addition to the game, the bundle will include an Ace Combat 6-branded version of Hori's upcoming Ace-Edge Flightstick and an Ace Combat 6 Xbox 360 faceplate. The Ace-Edge is the first flight sim accessory available for the Xbox 360, and it will come in two pieces--a throttle control and a flight stick proper.

The bundle retails for $149.99 and will be available in limited supply at EB Games, GameStop, Gamecrazy, and Amazon.com this holiday season.

Ace Combat 6 will be making its Xbox 360 debut later this year and will retail for $59.99. It has not yet been rated. Check out GameSpot's first look of the game for more information.

Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
We take to the skies and fly the highway to the danger zone.

by Nate Ahearn
June 15, 2007 -

Seeing a series migrate from one system to another always raises a few eyebrows. Why did the developers make the switch? Was it the superior hardware of one console over another? Maybe it was a dispute with the bigwigs at a given company? Or maybe it was some feature that one console had over another. In the case of Ace Combat's migration to greener, Xbox 360 pastures it was the latter. Xbox Live was what coerced the folks at Namco-Bandai to bring their perennial Playstation powerhouse over to Microsoft's console.

Online play is a big part of what differentiates Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation from past titles, and the Xbox 360's solution was simply a better fit for the gameplay that Namco was trying to bring to the game. We got a brief chance to fly through the skies of Ace Combat 6 at a recent Namco preview event, and while there were no multiplayer modes on display, we do know that the game will feature deathmatch, team deathmatch, and co-op play. A developer on-hand said that they've currently got the game running with 16 players online, but they're hoping to bump that number up to 32 to make the skies nice and crowded with enemy planes.

What we were able to get our hands on was a demo level that gamers will get to check out for themselves once E3 rolls around. The level began with a gorgeous real-time cinematic that showed pilots scrambling to get to their jets and get into the air. Apparently an attack had just been launched by a foreign country. Roadways, bridges, and buildings were shown being pummeled with missile and machine gun fire. While the locales are fictional in the game - the main setting being the Anean Continent - the necessity for a counterattack was made very clear.

Ace Combat 6 has what's being called the "Dynamic Operations System" which allows for up to six persistent battles to be going on around you. You can play a role in them or not, but the outcome of each incursion is up in the air and happening in real time. As I flew my F-15 around the sky I saw a group of what looked like paratroopers, but as it turned out they were actually enemy pilots who had been shot down and were trying to parachute down to safety. They didn't make it.

What's even cooler about the Dynamic Operations System is that they aren't all air battles. You could see two squads of ground troops on a collision course and decide to help one of them out with some air support, or maybe a naval battle is about to break so you decide to send off a few missiles on a collision course with the hull of an enemy aircraft carrier.

The actual aerial combat looks fantastic in the game. The model of your jet looks just as it did in Top Gun, which is to say it looks awesome. You can use the right analog stick to swivel your head around the cockpit, just like Goose did for Maverick. The standard machine gun and missile combination is your main offensive tool, but you'll also have the ability to call in support from naval ships, other pilots, and ground troops provided you help them out when asked. And yes, the missile cam that debuted in Ace Combat 4 is back and as cool as ever.

The story of the game centers around seven pilots, yourself included. No real specifics were given other than that the Republic of Emmeria, Kingdom of Nordennavic and the Federal Republic of Estovakia are the new countries being added to the action. Also, the Ulysses Asteroid will be featured within the storyline. In what capacity, we have no idea.

In a nod to flight-sim enthusiasts, Namco is releasing a flight stick called Ace Edge. It's a two piece set. One holds the throttle controls, and the other changes your pitch and yaw. We got a chance to put our hands on the flight stick - though we didn't actually play the game with it - and it feels very solid and conforms very nicely to your hand. There are a ton of buttons on the thing, though the controls weren't mapped out anywhere so there was no way to tell what did what. The whole package (game included) will retail for $149.99.

It's too bad that Sony lost one of its consistently solid franchises to Microsoft, but that's what you get when your online initiative sucks. Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation should deliver some great moments on Xbox Live, and the closer the developers can get to 32 players the better. The gameplay that we got a chance to check out felt like classic Ace Combat fare, but the build was still early, and it was tough to pay attention to anything other than the awesome water effects from a few thousand feet up. We'll have more on Ace Combat 6 as soon as we can get a build into the office and check it out first-hand.

you can thumbnail those

anyway this game looks rad. I'm playing through Ace Combat 5 atm and if it's as good as this one then its's going to be fun, especially online.

I just peeked and dude you are leaching those images directly from Gamespot's site. that's a huge no-no and you should upload them somewhere else :(

Well, I'm a big fan of this series and these screens and movies really cinches the 360 for me (when I get around to getting one). Why, this just might be my first game.

That flight stick bundle looks awfully nice.....

I'm a huge fan of the series as well, going all the way back to before PlayStation1 with the Air Combat arcade game on Namco's System 21 hardware. It would be sweet if both arcade Air Combat and arcade
Air Combat 22 were unlockables in Ace Combat 6.

Oh wow. So that's what the stick looks like. I figured it'd be about the same as the AC5 stick but I'm still surprised at how cool it looks. Any word if it'll be PC/Mac compatible though? I was going to buy a PC flight stick for some of the sims I want to play but I think I'll hold out until this is released.

It's nice to know the stick will be available on Amazon too. No shipping charge + no tax + not having to shop at EB/GS makes it a pretty sweet deal.
