View Full Version : I got some spare cash for one of the following, opinions please
So, I managed to have some spare cash, and I can afford one of the following, but I canot decide:
PSP + game(s)
20" TFT screen for computer
PS2 and some games
DS and some games
bigger HDD and some PC games
GPS thingie for the car
Xbox and many games
No PS3, 360 or Wii suggestions, as it has to stay just under Euro 200 ($260).

I'd probably go for either the DS or the monitor

I'd go for the DS because it's a system unlike any other or Xbox since you have so many cheap game options and the 360 isn't fully BC. I keep thinking that I'll get a PS3 some day, so I haven't bought a PS2 yet.

PS2 and some games
Buy the PS2 and some games. No brainer.
GPS thingie for the car
Despite being on a gaming board, I must say I am a GPS FREAK. I don't know anything about GPS navigation in Europe, but over here it's an unbelievable tool.
I picked up the Garmin i5 for about that price. It's super small and simple, uses a scroll wheel instead of a touchscreen which is only a little awkward, but has great performance for the price.

I got a gps for christmas it is great but under used. I WOULD WAIT ON THE PS2 because the price should drop soon. I would go for the xbox and many games. Games are so cheap right now you can pick up class a titles for next to nothing 3.99 5.99 games that alot of us payed 50 for. XIII deus ex, riddick, Hell I even liked dino crisis3.
Another reason is because of the clearance stores are just unloading them. When they clear them out that is it games will become harder and harder.
I learned my lesson from the snes era I was able to cleanup when the psx and dreamcast and n64 was going on the way out. That is a great way to build a nice collection on the cheap. You can even get 2 xboxs have it moded and theough mame on there. I say get more bang for your buck.
GPs's prices have dropped considerably since I got mine and they will continue to do so. I say go in and pillage the xbox village.

I have to say that it depends on whether or not you will be gaming on the go or not. If you enjoy portable gaming, hands down buy a DS. If you game at home, then I would buy a PS2 and a bunch of games. Either way, you are getting a great gaming machine with software to play.

I vote PS2 and games. You'll get more for your money.

Xbox or PS2. Depends which you can get more for your buck with -- all prices being equal i'd say PS2 as it has the most amazing library, but the xbox certainly is at a low price point these days.

bought a DS about 3 months ago and have been very happy since.
best thing you could do is buy your ds in store, then purchase your games online like ebay or amazon. I've saved a ton this way..
I agree with what others have said about ps2 + xbox..games are cheap, but the systems will be even cheaper very soon. I say you should hold off till a price break
before I had a ds I owned a psp, but felt it just didn't carry the punch that the ds had (in gaming). With psp you can carry music around, watching flicks on the go..be ready to purchase a extra battery though.

"bigger HDD and some PC games"
I would probably go with that, seeing as I've been having a blast with my budget pc that we pieced together. Either that or the new moniter

I would get the Xbox 1, just because I continue to be amazed by the prices I'm seeing for Xbox 1 games. I often see very good Xbox 1 games for only $4.99 brand new. Of course, this is in the USA, where bargain bins are widely available, I'm not sure how it is on your side of the pond. Plus if you get your Xbox modded and you put a big hard drive in there, then you can really go to town with it, and do all kinds of stuff with it.
I'm down to XBox, TFT screen, DS, GPS.
Thing is, there is a TomTom One on offer for Euro 199 in my local shop until end of next week

Since you are down to those then the DS is a very good choice. But if you can get XBox games for really cheap like some people said go with that.

I NEVER see bargain bins where I live. Are you talking about places like Walmart? At the Walmarts and Kmarts near me the lowest they keep their games is $14.99. At Kmart they have a section to the left of the games that is supposedly good deals but they are $19.99 and most of them are reseals. Even at pawn shops the games range from $15 to $35.

If quantity of games is an issue the Xbox is the place to go, assuming the market is similar over there, espeacially for preowned.
The PS2 should give a larger selection of great games though, espeacially RPG's if that's your thing. Xbox has that Halo thing, but your PC might handle that...
If your a casual gamer the handhelds would be a cool choice.
20" monitors are too small and prices will drop on the 22"+ sizes so I'd wait on that.
Never saw a use for a GPS other than in the cool gizmo category.

Kmart is quite possibly the worst store ever to buy games from. After the PS2 came out, I would still see dirt-common Genesis/SNES games there for $60. Wal-mart isn't really much better from what I've seen, but I hate going there due to the hordes of trailer park trash that congregate there.
Do you have Sam's Club near you? They usually have decent deals.
Anyway, as for the original poster, I'd also say to go for a Xbox1 and games. You can get a ton of great games now dirt cheap. The PS2 is still a very strong seller, so you're not likely to see any sort of major price drop in the syatem or games any time soon.

PSP hands down!
Games, music, movies, pictures.
Also many emulation and possible gps capabilities, that comes with customizing firmware though and could brick your psp.
I know one guy that uses some kinda software, and he does complete presentations with it.
It's a great little system and I have no idea why people don't recommend it more. I don't regret it one bit, many cool games, and it has gotten more use than my gameboy ever did.
It's a portable entertainment system, what more could you ask for.

Actually K-Mart is where I get 90% of my deals. I've gotten so many sweet games for $6 or less it's ridiculous.
But to be on topic, I would go with the PS2 and games as my first choice and a close second would be the DS. You could live off of just these two systems for years.
Right,
a nice 20" TFT screen for my PC won

If you have not owned a ps2 yet (shame on you!) I would say 100% go for the ps2, there are sooo many awsome and cheap games that are on that system that still makes it i my opinion the best game system in the last 10 years.
DS would come in a close second place, there are alot of great titles for the system and it shows no signs of letting on its flow of great releases.

id say either ds, xbox or monitor. the ps2 is dwindling down but games are still pricey, id wait for them to drop to or below xbox prices. xbox i feel is plunging down even more, here in the states at least, most games are 5-10 dollars and we have constant 3 for 2 deals. if you dont already have an xbox, there are some amazing games that can be had for close to nothing. the psp is getting a redesign so wiat for that... HDD prices are cheap and steadily falling, youll always have no problem picking up a 250gb hdd for under 99$. gps is up to you, if you feel your life needs it.
i just got a 21" lcd for my pc for 270$ -- an hp2035. and i fucking LOVE IT. its beautiful and amazing, plays everything like a dream, no ghosting or tearing and the colors are just a dream come true.
i also got a ds, and there are some real real nice gems to be played and had fun with. i recommend getting a flash cart of some kind, i have the m3 or something like that with a 1gb card inside, i love it.
btw -- i have a psp too, while its great with all the emulation and homebrew you can do on it, id say wait for the redesign and price drop.
good luck, and enjoy your new purchase, thats whats its there for =]
In the end I did get a 20.1" IISONIC (IIM20NB/SB) TFT.
Not Widescreen though. I looked at Widescreen TFTs and they look so odd running XP. I don't think I like the Widescreen display.
This IISONIC cost Euro 209.00, just 10 Euro more than expected. I probably could have gotten it a bit cheaper online, but then I could have found a 20" TFT from ebay.de for Euro 150 or so if I would have persisted.
Anyway, thanks for all your input...now I need an Xbox....and a GPS.....PS2...PSP
