I'm searching for racing games, that you can play together with a mate, against other CPU controlled combatants, through a series of races (cups) or a career mode.

I do know the following titles, but I'd like to find more:
-Super Mario Kart series
-Diddy Kong Racing
-Extreme G series
-Rumble Racing
-Street Racer

I don't understand what you mean by co-op. Co-op means that you work together to get through the game but you can't do that in racing games since someone has to come in first.

I know in Extreme G it is everyone for themselves. Same with at least the first two Mario Kart games, I've never played the last one.

I believe Burnout 3 let's you do co-op in crash and race modes.

That doesn't mean that you can't work together against the CPU drivers, but yeah, it is a bit misleading, sry.
I just couldn't come up with a better word..

Aww. I clicked this topic thinking someone had released a racing game based on the artist Coop's artwork.

That'd be nice.

The pit crew would look like 50's pin up models with huge boobs, and little horns on their head. :)

Lol, that's what I was thinking. That or 50's style hot rods driven by devil girls and alien chicks with tig ol' bitties.

There was the recent game 187: Ride or Die, where one person can drive while the other shoots the car's weapons. It's not a very good game, but you can find it dirt cheap now.

Wouldn't the term just be multiplayer for what you were looking for?

Though I do think Double Dash has coop modes where 2 players share a kart, though I've only ever done up to 2 player on that Mario Kart so I'm not sure.

Yes, Double Dash has Co-Op, one player drives while the other uses power up items.

No, that wouldn't be sufficient.
I hate almost if not all multiplayer modes in racing games, cause they only allow you to compete in a single race against another human player. You're racing one or two times and then it tends to get boring pretty fast (examples: F-Zero series, Wave Race 64, Gran Turismo series, Stunt Race FX and nearly any other racing game).

I'm searching for a different multiplayer experience.

A ton of racing games let you race human and AI competition at the same time.

One of my favorites was Top Gear on the Super Nintendo.

A ton?
Then why is it so difficult to come up with examples, especially regarding newer games (and remember also that I don't mean just single races against AI drivers, I was referring to whole championships or career like things)?
My list is still pretty short, but thx for the mention, and while seeing some Top Gear screens I remembered another one, namely Lotus 2.

Lucky & Wild

This is a mix between racing a car and shooting bad guys.

I must've missed you saying it couldn't be single races. Theres a ton of multiplayer split screen racers with AI competition, but I couldn't tell you which let you race in a series together besides the Top Gear and Lotus games, and overhead racers like Super Off-Road.
