Namco Bandai has announced it will release its classic baseball series Famistar on Nintendo DS. The series debuted on Famicom in 1986 and has since appeared across other platforms, including the Game Boy, Nintendo 64 and PlayStation 2 -- in Japan. As you might have already guessed, the NES version was released here as RBI Baseball.
The DS version includes the Famistar, Dream League and Network Multiplayer modes. Famistar allows players to choose a team and play single or playoff games. Dream League is like a campaign mode where you can create your own team name, logo, uniform and so on. The network multiplayer allows for one-cartridge play, as well as via Internet using Wi-Fi connection. Expect to see a Namco All-Star Team featuring Pacman and other secret team, too.

There is no word on a US release, but hopefully there will be. be. The release date in Japan is September 27th.

Any word on whether or not the game will have updated graphics? If there's a Namco All Star Team I guess they'd have to...

Woo! I'm jazzed. The RBI Baseball/Famista baseball series is one of my favorite sports series in video games...

is Famistar just the Japanese name for the RBI series? I didn't even know the series was continued after it disappeared from the US years ago.

Yeah. I didn't know about the N64 or PS2 releases but I've played a lot of the NES & SNES ones. I think Tengen totally overhauled the graphics for RBI 2 & 3 though because none of the Famistar's I've played looked like that. They kept some of the original music in there though.

Fantastic news! With online play this is an absolute must buy for me. I doubt it can top my all time favorite baseball game - Baseball Stars on the Neo Geo - but if it's anything like the RBI games on the NES it'll be fantastic.

I do hope the U.S. gets it. We definitely need a decent baseball game for the DS.

Having not seen an RBI Baseball game since the 32X copy, would somebody be kind enough to post pictures from the recent games (N64/PS2) which I didn't know existed either?

QFT. I got suckered into buying MLB 2K7 for DS at $14, worst fucking game ever. 1 Stadium, 2 player models, awkward pitching with odd slowdown, just horrible all around.

I threw it on ebay and somehow got $31 for it, even though you can get a new one for $20...

It looks really cool. I haven't played any of the FamiSta games outside of the ones on the NES (and more recently, the Famicom and PC Engine ones), but I had fun with those. Can't wait to import this one.

Oh wow, it still even looks like a classic Famista game. Now I'm really pumped. :D

This site has some more media for the game.

I can't read anything on these pamphlets, so I really can’t say what’s going on. The game looks like it holds true to the old FamiSta games I’ve played (again, I haven’t tried, or even looked at, any new ones until today), so I’m really excited. The create a team mode looks cool… and it looks like there will be collectables or power ups of some sort judging by the capsule toy machine in one of the pictures. I’m also interested in these in-game trading cards of the players. I never got deep enough into baseball to really understand what the statistics actually meant, but these look really easy to understand with the (for lack of a better word) power bars next to the numbers.

Actually… now that I look at it… I don’t think these numbers represent actual stats. Again, I’m just speculating--I can’t read Japanese. If you can level up your players during game play, that would be really cool. And if you can make a team, I bet you can make a custom set of cards… and if you can trade players online… Wow! It’s like Pokemon for fans of Pro Yakyu!

In related news there already appears to be an online version of FamiSta for the PC. http://www.gamenews.ne.jp/en/archives/2006/08/masterpiece_fam.html

Time to find out more about this. If it’s somehow accessible to (and cheap... meaning... free for) western audiences, we need to get some DP games going. :)

EDIT: Here's the page for the online game. Oh man, watch that intro movie. :D http://fmst.hangame.co.jp/st/index.asp

Yeah, I just played a match against a random Japanese opponent, and got pretty demolished… not just by the other player, but by a bad connection and my missing right-arrow key. Aside from that, FamiSta was as fun as I remembered. The game appears to share the DS’ card system and capsule machines (which you get additional cards out of), which I brought up in the flyers. Cards seem to represent both players and power-ups that you can activate during gameplay. Like I thought, there’s some sort of experience system. I’m not sure if every player grows by playing, but you, as owner of the team, have experience points and can level up. There’s no total team customization in this one--you pick from the twelve Japanese baseball teams, and stick with that team for the rest of the career--but you can still edit the rosters with new cards. Other than that, it’s classic R.B.I. Baseball, which is good news for the DS game.

If you want to give it a swing, the game is free to try. The registration is all in Japanese, and you need to do it through the company’s own custom Active X page in Internet Explorer. Because of this, Google translation isn’t allowed…but if you’ve faked Japanese forms like this in the past, this one isn’t much harder to do ;). If you can’t figure it out, just ask, and I’ll tell you what I did.

Unfortunately, there might not be a true lobby where you can pick from a list of matches. I was automatically thrown into the game with the other guy; this might be a problem if we want to play games with other DPers. It does look like there is some sort of friend system, so we might be able to do it from there… the problem is, we just have to figure out how.

I just started playing this the other day. Don't know what's going on in any of the menus but I managed to get a few exhibition games started. Feels like classic FamiSta baseball but I thought the difficulty was too easy compared to the Famicom and SFC Famista's. Several times, I've hit back-to-back-to-back home runs and final score will usually be in the 20's. There's probably a way to change the difficulty but I haven't been able to find it yet. Still a great game overall though.
