I was looking at the retoware episode on youtube about the differnts between the US & Japanses version...I know the game will run on the NES with a converter

The thing i'm trying to say is, would it work like it was in the Famicom

It isn't, unless you're playing the European arcade version of the game.

The only differences between the US and Japan release are the cutscenes, other than that it's the same damn game.

No it's not, the Japanese version took advantage of the ability of the Famicom to run custom mappers. This allows some cool graphical enhancements such as the trees in the Jungle stage blowing in the wind and snowfall in the Snow Field stage.

These enhancements will NOT be present if a Japanese Contra cartridge is played on a NES with a converter as the system cannot take advantage of the enhancements on the cartridge. Same thing with Castlevania III and a few other Famicom games.

Yeah, I'm sorry, but as the last poster was so nice to comment on it twice, the character animation that you see in the Japanese version of Contra still works fine in an NES with a converter. The only things in Famicom games that the NES cannot electrically take advantage of are the extra audio chips, which some games like Akumajou Densetsu, Gimmick!, etc have. Contra's not one of them.

I agree with this.
