If you have the latest firmware on your PSP, you won't be able to play emulators or any other kind of homebrew. You can only do that if your PSP has v3.03 firware or lower because there's no way to downgrade from 3.03+ yet.

Further, there isn't a good port of MAME yet. Not that I'm aware of.

Although the Namco, the 2 Capcom collections, and the Taito collections (amongst others, like the Konami ones) kind of make up for that :)

Plus there is good Neo Geo and CPSII emulation.

Since this has been brought up.
What Emu do people use for NES games?
I've got NesterJ installed on mine but I can't figure out how the saves work since its in Japanese.

Everytime there's a new firmware upgrade, you have to wait a while before homebrew people figure out how to put emulators on it, or even how to downgrade it. That's why emulation enthusiasts will usually want to not immediately upgrade everytime there's a new firmware version.
Don't worry about it. You just have to give it some time.
Once you can install, just do a Google search for PSP emulation, and you'll get a number of knowledgable sites that will point you to the right programs to install.
